Title: EA Kicks the Rev Up and Down the Street
Post by: Artimus on April 25, 2006, 08:43:44 AM
“One of the challenges for the Revolution is that it’s not HD. If you think about RTS games, one element is the control scheme, but the other is the distance from the TV screen when you’re playing a console game versus a PC game. One of the reasons Battle for Middle Earth II works so well on the [Xbox] 360 is the controller, but the other reason is the HD - you can see everything, frankly, as well or better as you can when you’re [as close as you would be to a PC]. So I think there are some questions there, and the other issue is performance. The hardware performance is sort of current gen plus, versus the 10x or 20x multiple that you get on next-gen. I mean, EA is building stuff for it, but I kind of prefer the DS. It makes the most sense to me.” - Electronic Arts Los Angeles Vice President and General Manager Neil Young

Ugh. I hate EA, but this just makes me hate them more.

It's... a valid statement. *shrug* Now whether it was meant as criticism for the Rev instead of as a factual observation is debatable.

yea this may ultimately prove to be the Rev's biggest problem. Not the HD part; HD is overemphasized at this point. The big issue I see is in the RAM. I'm with Ian on this: I want to see more expansive environments with more enemies etc.
I really hope that Ninty's got a PPU dealing with the calculations for the Revmote, otherwise valuable system resources will be used just monitoring the movements.
NOTE: This post is mostly crap. I know so little about computer performance / game programming that the only thing you should have read was the first paragraph.

Don't the majority of 360 owners (and future PS3 owners) play their system on a SD TV? I guess they're SOL if they want to play an EA RTS game.

The hardware issue is valid but the HD point doesn't really fly. EA can't make games that rely on the player to have an HD because most people don't. I am pro-HD merely because it is providing an option for people who have HDTVs. My whole complaint about Nintendo not supporting HD is that they're enforcing a restriction on their console for consumers. If you have an HDTV you can't take advantage of it with a Rev and I think that sucks. But you can't make games specifically for HD. If you're going to do that then the Xbox 360 might as well be like the Genesis/Sega CD/32X where you have one console but with some games you have to fork over more dough to have the option of playing them.

Sounds like nonsense. Warcraft worked in 320x200, so did Command and Conquer. The problem you're facing in an RTS is that the happenings onscreen become too small to track, the resolution is not an issue. Text can become problematic at SD but then again you won't be able to read it at TV distance, either.

The guy is responsible for making BME2 on the 360. He wants to sell that game. Saying the Rev is great and rts games will work great on it conflicts with selling BME2 on the 360.

Does this mean I'm gonna need to buy a system other then the Revolution to play all of EA's sh*tty games?

Seems to me like the Revmote is IDEAL for RTS games.

RTS games are about the visual presentation, not the gameplay.

I see that HD benefits strategy games, but the control can make up for the lack of it now that I think about it. Still, I dont see a game like Homeworld working well on the revolution, but oh god if Id be happy to be proved wrong.

I like how the Rev is actually EASIER to develop for because it doesn't have to worry about HD eating resources, yet to EA it's a negative thing...Sorry, but I have HDTV, and have played games in both 480 and 1080 and there really is no difference..."Harder to see," what a joke...

How does BfME II work on a controller? Looks like EA wants to go back to the StarCraft 64 days...
Really, the most important thing for RTS games is the input. All RTS games have been built on the mouse-and-keyboard setup, and the Rev's controller could easily serve for both. Sure there's less buttons, but in RTS games the only buttons you need are the mouse buttons and scroll wheel, the rest are just hotkeys. The Rev's pointer would make control a lot easier then an analogue stick.

As far as EA, all of their big guns are coming to Rev. I don't understand why they come out and deflect/disparage it when I know that inside at least one of their studios, there are 5 games being developed, and they all take advantage of the new controls. I think some at the top have no idea what is going on in the trenches.

Mentioning that hd tv is the same as sitting close to a computer monitor is an awful comparison. I thought that sitting a reasonable distance from a tv made hd not really noticable at all which is totally different from sitting right infront of a computer.

He doesn't like the Rev graphics, so he prefers to develop for the D$. Makes perfect sense.
