Title: The New Castlevania Art Style
Post by: Artimus on April 21, 2006, 11:42:17 AM
I was waiting for someone to make a thread (as I really dont care) about this, but surprisingly no one has. A few sites have flipped out over the new anime-art style (publicity art, no screens yet) for the new Castlevania DS. They're judging based off of the Nintendo Power cover. View here:

So...thoughts?

Here are a couple screens.

They're beautiful.  We have no need to worry.  Besides, it can't get any worse than Soma's character art.

Personally I never cared for the "every guy has the testosterone level of Richard Simmons" look that was going before so any change of style is welcome.  That NP cover artwork isn't that great but at least the male lead looks like a MALE.

Hmm.  That is a bit different from the generic anime look of Dawn of Sorrow.  It looks kind of Yu-Gi-Oh-ish, with a dash of Kim Possible, but while still trying to look like standard anime fare.  I like that it's an attempt to be different.  I'm not a big fan of the well-loved older style, either.  However, the art on the box doesn't affect the games, and I've never really cared too much one way or the other.

I think it's pretty good, my only issue is with all the silly belt buckles on the guy's outfit, it seems to be a real trend nowdays.  End the buckle insanity!

My big issue with those screenshots is why do they still insist on putting an outline like that around the main characters.  It looks gaudy and almost amateurish.  Other than that, everything else seems to be falling into place, though I wonder if this is supposed to be the same John Morris from Castlevania Bloodlines.

I didn't care much for the old style, the characters in DoS seem much more alive than they do in AoS. Mostly because DoS has different portraits for different moods (which would have avoided silliness like Yoko still standing and smiling after Graham stabbed her) and the characters have much stronger personalities drawn into them rather than looking like people in some middle age era painting.

I don't care how it looks, actually. Castlevania is Castlevania. Which means it's good.

I've just played the first and last DS games (of the modern ones) and they were both great fun.

?

The first DS game was the latest DS game.  Where'd the 2nd one come from?
