Title: what if the ps3-mote was revealed at E3?
Post by: wandering on March 22, 2006, 09:45:03 PM

Harrison then said that "the PS3 controller will be revealed at E3." (Emphasis added.) Though he would not elaborate, his comments appear to imply that the PS3 controller has been redesigned, as some sites have reported. When asked for clarification, a Sony rep would only say, "To date the PS3 controller shown has been a prototype. I can confirm that Phil stated the final PS3 controller will be at E3."

So. Serious question. What if Sony comes out at e3 with a revmote-alike. I know this has been discussed before, but the conclusion has generally been that Sony either couldn't get around Nintendo's patents or they couldn't make one in time or they couldn't get Nintendo's radical design to gel with the traditional dual shock design.

...But let's assume they can. Let's assume that the ps3 will come out around the same time as the rev this holiday season, and let's assume they have a good revmote-alike as their primary controller.

What then? Does Nintendo's system, with it's inferior capabilites, fail? Would a better price point (which Nintendo isn't willing to take a loss on, while Sony is) be enough to keep the system afloat? Or would Nintendo come in last place once again?

It only works when you're talking about the word in relation to Nintendo!

Then the PS3 would be even more "expensive" and they'd need software to justify the adoption of the new motion functionality and convince people that it's ok to play Tekken with it.

It would mean that Microsoft would be screwed, as they would be the odd man out then. Overall, it would be very bad for Nintendo, but it would hurt the Xbox 360 far more.

Nah, they've just improved the aerodynamic properties of the controller.

I believe a redesign is in store for Sony's pad, but I don't believe it will be anything more than that, it will still be a pad.  Maybe there will be a trackball or a touch screen which uses tactile plates, but I would not expect anything revolutionary.

I don't think Microsoft or Sony care to copy Nintendo's controller design yet.

The controller is an unproven variable to the public eye.  It is yet to be seen if Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot, or if these new controllers really will bring new life to Nintendo.

Until the results are shown leaning toward Nintendo's success or away from it I think Sony is playing it safe.

Remember the Sony PS3 pad they showed was horribly designed and was attacked by all media...so Sony is naturally redesigning the controller for better mass appeal, not necessarily new functions.

I've always found it odd that Nintendo made a big stink about how if they showed off their controller too soon they would be copied only to then show the controller and nothing else thus giving the competition ample time to copy them.  It's like the stuff that was supposed to be kept secret is out in the open and the stuff that's being kept secret is the stuff that should be public knowledge.  So I figure the real secret is the use of the controller and it wouldn't really matter if Sony copied the controller provided Nintendo were the ones to make the better games that use it.  Sony copied the analog stick but Nintendo clearly made better use of it.

Either that or the remote is a ruse to trick Sony into copying a weird idea and after Sony commits to it Nintendo's going to go "Surprise!" and reveal the REAL controller.

Actually Ian, I remember someone from Nintendo saying that "we haven't shown what the controller can do because we are still trying to get the patents locked on it", and that's so the competitors can't copy it, however it doesn't stop the competitors from having a similar type of controller but with different technology that isn't patented by Nintendo, otherwise I could see another "Immersion Part Deux".

What if they announce FF 13 is going to be a PSP connectivity title?

Iwata said something to the effect of, "the most important thing about the Nintendo Revolution is still to be told."

As much as you would like/hate to believe it, Nintendo isn't stupid (anymore).

I actually think he was just emphasizing the ease of development.

This is the Game Developers Conference after all.

No more secrets left, just a list of games.

They've been hyping ease of development since last E3, it's hardly a secret at this point.

And don't forget Miyamoto blatantly hinted at a third Revolutionary aspect.

The sad thing is... All the Sony fanboys who flame the idea of a remote controller would then love and support it.

'course. Doublethink is mandatory for fanboys.

I really feel that if a controller like the Rev's is anything other then the main focus of a system, it will never be more then a sparkling innovation. If Sony offers their boomerang controller as their primary one, their PS3-mote would be their next EyeToy: Fun for a while, but nothing deep. Nintendo needed to change, to differentiate themselves from the competition or else they would have been doomed to another third place finish and a further shrinking user base. If Sony does this, it will be simply for the sake of copying.

I wouldn't be surprised if this happened.

I'm still surprised Sony hasn't released a PSP with touchscreen, microphone and clamshell design.

Sony has had no problems redesigning systems in the past without skipping a beat. I don't see why they wouldn't do it in this case.

They'll put that stuff on the PSP2.

because Sony has stated PSp is not competing with DS, they aret hat stupiud, it is competing with Ipod. Aony wants PSp to eleminate Ipod period so they can make Walkman profitable again.

Sony knows, as arrogant as they are they KNOW Nintendo ONWS the handheld market and have been proven that once again. PSP doesnt even sell very many games.

Back to PS3 remote, in all honesty, considering the rave reviews by devs and considering that even Nintendo is offering a shell for those who dont adapt right away, I would be surprised if Sony DIDNT copy the remtoe on some way or another, its just copetitive bussiness and they already are behind revolution in all aspects except HD and graphics. They dont even have a real online plan yet so if they dont do something to make Nintendo look worse than them they are screwed.

With PSP2, if I were in control of Sony, I would ditch the disk format and make it the ipod of games, but Nintendo will beat them to it most likely.  I would give it dual touch screens, which Nintendo will also most likely beat them to.  On the touch screens though would go clear plates with mechanics unique to the game you buy.
