Title: Dreamcast games
Post by: TheCouch123 on February 24, 2003, 12:44:50 PM
Hello everybody i am getting a dreamcast and was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on games to get. (even though this is a what game should i get/poll thread i thought it would be alright since there is a what game should i get thread in the gamecube discussions. So one should be aloud for the Dreamcast.Right?)

Soul Calibur!

Many games should be $5 to $15. Just pick some up and trade them in if you don't like them.

Rayman 2 is great platforming fun.  Better than Mario Sunshine in my opinion.  More varied.

Crazy Taxi 1 or 2.  Both are great if you haven't played the first on another system.  If you have, then 2 might get boring a little fast.

Metropolis Street Racer (if you can find it) is an awesome street racing game along the lines of midnight club, but without characters.  It's extremely challenging, and the car selection is pretty extensive.

If you dont have sonic adventure 2 battle for gamecube, get it for dreamcast. Awsome game, good graphic and amazing story and gameplay. Also check out the OG sonic adventure. The tony hawk games 1 and 2 are also on dreamcast. THPS2 is still my fav. of the series If you want over the top racing, go for sanfransico rush 2049.

oh god... where to start.... (i'm a dreamcast junkie)

jet grind/set radio ("set" in PAL and JAP, "grind" in U.S.)
phantasy star online (don't know if many still play, best to ask around before a purchase)
shenmue (stunning, stunning, stunning)
shenmue II (likewise)
skies of arcadia (superb)
unreal tournament (good port of an excellent fps)
soul calibur (duh)
rez (you have to play this game)
resident evil: code veronica (likewise)
grandia II (great game)
sonic adventure (it's sonic, nuff said)
sonic adventure 2 (likewise)
headhunter
marvel vs. capcom 2
crazy taxi/ct2
space channel 5

and many more.  some ign writer best summed up the dc with this...

"the candle burns twice as bright for half as long"

it is a shame it didn't get the support it did... imagine it now with PDO, JSRF, SMB, Beach Spikers and many more. it would be unstoppable, sega's dreamcast days were arguably some of their best in terms of output with consistently innovative and consistently excellent titles. enjoy gaming heaven.

agreed.  games like JST, Shenmue I & II are some of the best games i've played.  i'll always keep my DC with pride!

Pso on dreamcast is still very popular (i last played at my mates about 1-2 months ago)
OMG marvel vs capcom, i would give my left testical for an IDENTICAL port for that on the gamecube, its THAT fun, best beat 'em up EVER in my humble wee opinion infact, im still considering buying a dreamcast from Ebay cause i love this game so much

cannon spike (i think) is a pretty good game too, allbeit a little short, but it does have megaman in it thats a fun novelty in its own

Dreamcast is still god of fighting games, ehehehe

Here's a happy checklist: Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK 2 (import), Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Project Justice (HELL YES), Power Stone 2, King of Fighters '98 (and a couple others, if I remember; they changed the name to KOF '99 Dream Match or something for DC), Last Blade 2, Garou/Fatal Fury MOTW, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear X (import).

Also, DDR 2nd Mix and Club Mix (both imports) are kickin' rad.

Electronics Boutiques has a number of Dreamcast games for sale for cheap. I even bought Jet Grind Radio for cheap ($9.99). Unreal Tournament was on sale at my local EB for $20, but I can get it via EBGames for only 8 bucks. All these games are preowned, but that doesnt matter to me.

I got a brand new JGR at Toys'r'us a while back (like a year or so) for ten dollars. Yes, envy me

There are a couple of games you really shouldn't miss, even if it means picking up the new, updated versions on whatever system you may have (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube.)

Jet Grind Radio
Skies of Arcadia
Phantasy Star Online (although last time I checked playing online is useless, way too many hackers)
Soul Calibur
Both Crazy Taxi's (they pwn )

By the way, does anyone know if the online servers are still up? Is there anyway to play online?

Okay, this may not seem like an obvious choice, but if you have a lot of friends---

RUSH 2049!

This game became more popular than Smash Brothers with me and the friends I lived with a couple of years ago.  The battle and stunt modes are unbeatable, and the racing is the best in the seires.  Seroiously, buy that game.

Other than that:
 Jet Grind Radio
 Rez
Cosmic Smash (import it, it's 3D pong, and it's great)

Be sure to check out Wal Mart's website.  They occasionally drop games to dirt cheap prices.  Bass Fishing was recently less than $3, and I got Space Channel 5 for $5, shipped.

well for rpgs- go with grandia 2 or skies (if you dont have it on gc)
i dont know how many got this game- but i thought seaman was great (whats better than talking to a wise cracking fish....)
sega gt is good for racing
it also has the best capcom fighters- mvc mvc2 streetfighter cvsnk powerstone 1+2
also- get a light gun and get some light gun games- house of the dead 2, death crimson ox, confidential mission
i own dc and i love it

Yeah, Skies or Grandia is a must.  Grandia has a better battle system, but Skies is awesome too.  There are so many good games.  JGR, Re-volt.

Also alot of what I have people have already mentioned.  I only wish I bought Shenmue II, European version.

Also a quirky game is Bangai-o, really great, usually can be found discount.

Jesus Grandia II has a great battle system. O_O I found myself running into to enemies just so I could fight them. Still my favorite RPG to date (with Earthbound an extremely close second), mainly because of the surprisingly deep religious message (a departure from the same old "trust your friends" crap).

I could reccomend Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 1/2, or a lot of other incredible games (most of which you can now get on the Gamecube), but all have been mentioned except for Toy Commander. In my opinion, this is one of the best Dreamcas games I've ever played- it mixes that Toy Story feel with a slightly more demonic aura that is just a BLAST to play. Especially the multiplayer- my friends and I still play this thing for hours. I DEFINETLY reccomend picking it up.

yeah the game's battle system is one of the few that made me want to battle and go through dungeons
the only other rpgs that made me do that were valkyrie profile, earthbound, and of course chrono trigger
and the story line is soooooooooooooo good- it focuses on not a broad story, but characterization
the way they make the characters come accross is not only believable, but also great
and the love story in the game really made me happy to play (the relationship between elaina and ryudo really touched me)
and the heavy religious message really made the story interesting- makes you think twice about what religion really is
yeah as you can see i love grandia 2- i really hope they make a 3rd one soon (and not that extreme crap they made on the ps2)
its not that extream was bad, but it didnt have a good story
but yeah the dreamcast is one of the best systems to come out, but it just was not popular enough

I have Xtreme- I love it. That's probably because the whole point is just dungeon crawling (fighting enemies!) with, as you said, pretty much nill story.
Title: Dreamcast games
Post by: rpglover on April 15, 2003, 03:59:20 PM
yeah xtream is not a bad game, as the battle system makes up for no story and all that
but compaired to grandia 2 it isnt as good- i just have a soft spot for love stories in rpgs
and thats why i loved grandia 2- but xtream is great as a dungeon crawler- which is what it wanted to be in the first place
personally making a new grandia for any system would be great- as long as it has a good story

has anyone actually played the first grandia though?
i loved that game as well- it was a well thought out story and great gameplay
but i still think it is not as good as 2

Very true- Xtreme is just something to tie us over for when Game Arts makes Grandia III.

I'd love to play the original Grandia- I've actually been planning on picking it up off EBay or something for a while but never quite got around to it.

Post by: rpglover on April 15, 2003, 05:04:26 PM
yeah grandia 1 was on both psx and saturn
i would suggest getting it on saturn if you could (probably expensive now but runs a little better than the psx version)
you could probably find it for psx at a gamestop or eb (i found mine at eb)
personally i liked grandia 2 more but grandia was a great game
characters were good, story was very well done, and the graphics were pretty good for the time
everything is in 2d but it has the same battle system (although a little sluggish compaired to xtream or even 2)
i highly suggest it if you can get it- i found it to be a good game

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People who love grandia as much as I.

I played 2 for so long, my only breaks were bathroom ones.  i didn't sleep while i owned the game.  It truly was the best ever.  Such a cool fighting system.  And the religous themes were so incredibly powerful.  Also the song that the main girl sings is really cool.  LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT.

I let my friend borrow it and she broke it..........WHYYYYyyyyyyyYYYYYYYYYYyyyyYYYy????
anyway, yes it is great.  Havent played EXtreme,  heard it is good, but dont have a PS2, so i will wait till the future when they rae duirt cheap.

Good night.

If an RPG has no love story, itll hit the wall.  Grandia still has my favorite love story.  And i felt so bad for millenia.

I got my copy of Grandia II with a soundtrack included (I actually think that came standard)- really good. I lvoed that soundtrack.

I know how you fealt while playing the game- Grandia II holds my record for second longest gaming marathon of roughly 16 hours straight- Ionly stopped to eat when I was really hungry and to go to the bathroom. My longest gaming marathon ever was 18 hours for Ocarina of Time.

After the Dreamcast died, I had often considered getting one as my first (and last) non-Nintendo console.  The problem was that all the games on it that I might want to play are available (or will be) on GameCube.  About the only Dreamcast game left that I might want to play is Shenmue or Space Channel 5.  Space Channel 5 kind of weirds me out though, and I don't really know if it's good or not as I haven't played it.  I played a little bit of Shenmue II at a friend's house, and it looked completely uninteresting to me, and I have heard many stories about the game, either saying it was extremely good or extremely boring.  I think I would think it was boring, but I would like to find out for myself by playing it for more than 15 minutes.

Alas it seems I will never get to play either game, but really, I am not going to buy the system for 2 games that I may or may not like.  I am perfectly happy with GameCube ports for the rest.

Post by: rpglover on April 16, 2003, 07:56:45 PM
yeah grandia 2 was one of the only rpgs i played again for the fun of it
i must have played through it at least 5 times (which is a lot for any rpg)
the only other rpgs i replayed that much were earthbound and chrono trigger
grandia 1 was fun but i just didnt like it as much as the first
the reason i love grandia 2 so much is just the fact it has great characters, story, and can be played through fast
so whats everyones fastest time to beat grandia 2- mine was 15:25 with playing most of the battles
Title: Dreamcast games
Post by: RahXephon on April 17, 2003, 08:21:35 PM
to be honest, my goal in rpgs is to level up as high as i can, so when i start the second time, i usually don't stop till i am like lvl 90.  I lover powering upo my Ryodo, brings a tear to me eye.  So the shortest time was when i first beat it, but i cant remember anymore.  It took awile, i love dilly-dallying in rpgs.
Title: Dreamcast games
Post by: rpglover on April 18, 2003, 06:33:46 AM
yeah i usually level up as high as can be my first time through but later times i just blast through it
but i do save at important (and touching) parts to the story line
especially including: sky's revalation to elana of ryudo's past, when ryudo must fight melfice for the second time, when ryudo goes to elmo to eliminate the horns of valmar, mareg's sacrifice

i have more but i felt those were the big touching moments in the game

Hehe- in Grandia II, I had been playing for about 12 hours total and got up to the Eyes of Valmar (those 3 eye mini bosses before the actual Eye of Valmar). I tried so many times but I could never beat them. I stopped playing the game for a month or so then finally came back. I spent the next several hours leveling EVERYONE up 10 levels. Needless to say, those pesky eyes were no problem after that. It kind of made the rest of the game easy, though.

if you liked Shenmue, you'll love Shenmue II.  Get. This. Game.
Grey Ninja, Shenmue is not a game you can play for 15 mins to tell if you'll like it.  you have to play it for a couple of hours.  it does get boring in places, but what's so good about it far outweight the bad.

i also really liked Grandia II.  awesome battle system i never got bored of.  i couldn't stop playing the game and was always itching to get into battle all the time.  my only gripe against the game was the dungeons.  there wasn't much puzzles and were straight forward.   and the game was a bit easy.  the only battle i lost was eyes of valmar, which was once.

did anyone love the battle theme?  especially Fight!! Version 3?  a very catchy theme and i recorded it onto my computer via my capture device.

i liked the main battle theme the most (version 1) - it was really catchy and got you in the mood to do some battling i thought
personally i loved the music to the game and downloaded all of it to my computer
and elana's song was really touching- i forget exactly what it was called but it played at the title screen with no vocals
with the vocals it was just plain amazing
i guess as you guys can see i love grandia 2 as most people should

Someone already said it on this thread, but I must reiterate that Project Justice is a must buy if you like fighting games.

For RPGs, there's the obligatory SoA, but you might as well buy the enhanced version to support RPGs on the GC.  Grandia II is also available, which is good, but I wouldn't consider it as good as Grandia I.  The dungeons just got tedious after a point, and the story just wasn't as good in my opinion.  Aside from the big two, there's the Evolutions, but again, they made it to the GC.  I guess you could also buy the Sega Smash Pack to get Shining Force and Phantasy Star II.
