This explains the current shortage! I wonder how many of these they'll have ready for launch, that 600,000 week could easily be broken.

I'm happy with this, it isn't such a huge upgrade to make me angry as a current DS owner, but it's nice so i'll probably end up getting one sometime in the future. It's pretty much the same, except smaller and slightly different looking, looks like the Revolutoin controller. I like how the mic is in the middle too, nice touch. Also, where's the power button?

Wow.

I'm liking Nintendo's newfound sense of style.

Not sure if the 'lite' name would fly in the us, though.

I think the power button is in the bottom right hand corner. Much better in my opinion, a few times I've accidently powered off during frantic mario kart play.

My DS's left shoulder button just stopped working, this is perfect timing!  Nintendo offered a refurbished one for 65.00 but hell I'll wait!  I was gonna import a white DS from Japan but I'll be patient!

Ps Does anyone see if they changed the screen size?, i see it talking about the system's size goin down but not the screen, and is that a bigger stylus?

I concur.

I'd assume that the screens are the same size. And that the system is smaller more than the stylus is bigger.

I love Nintendo's new Apple image.

I hate Nintendo's copying apple.  I don't want my grubby fingerprints to show up on my white ds and rev controller... and I don't want people to mistake my DS for an iPod... blah...

Anyway, I'm also hoping they release this in the nice mirror black that they first showed the revolution in.  I also hope the buttons are no longer clicky.

Clearly you are judging something without using it, the white normal ds doesnt leave finger prints at all

It's because you have only had it for a year...

Do you have a white mouse?  Look at it closely.
Have you had your wavebirds since launch?  See if you can get your hands on a new one to compare them.

Fact of the matter is, white things show dirt more than black things much of the time...

I'm not too crazy about the Apple-copying trend either.  I find Apple designs boring.  But I guess boring is what the masses want right now and since Nintendo's own designs are sometimes criticized for not being slick enough, I guess this is the smart way to go.

I do like everything else about it.  Size and brightness adjustment both sound great.  I'm still not buying one, but if I had to get a new one, this is definitely the version to get.  I hope Nintendo drops the regular DS price to $100 to coincide with the launch of this version, I think that would put the system in a brand-new league compared to the PSP.

I knew they wouldn't let that SP II screen steal all the thunder, I knew that if they did upgrade it in any way it would be to brighten the screen

They didn't fix the problems with the DS (A button too close to the edge) and made the start and select button position worse. Great job, Nintendo!

There, fixed that for you.  It's all subjective.  I like it.

KDR:  I think you are being pretty hard on Nintendo.

They fixed alot of the problems.  The smaller size will make it easier to hold, and will probably prevent cramping.  The white sleek design is very attractive and looks much less like a toy and much more techno-savvy.

The Buttons look like they are still comfortable, and the select and start buttons, are not usually used as action buttons, so the placement is not horrible.  Still reachable during play, but positioned in a place that shouldn't get in the way.

I am excited and will hold my judgement until I try it.  I am very excited and really want to try this new version sooner than later.

been itching to get a 2nd DS.....Coming home finding someone else using your DS, forced to wait till they are done or go play on the PC, or cube.  It makes me really want another DS around the house, plus i've always hated the corner areas of the current DS and the weight that it has, its very difficult to play it holding one hand and trying to lay down on a couch or your bed.

I'm rather indifferent to Nintendo copying Apple.  All I care about is functionality.  I want any controller or portable to be comfortable, ergonomic, responsive, and durable.  As long as those are taken care of I don't care what the controller looks like.  They might as well go with something that people that do care about that sort of stuff like.  Go with what sells as long as it doesn't compromise the important stuff.

Is that touch screen raised? (Weird shadow on the image). That might be kind of awkward in quick-draw moments (e.g. Castlevania DoS). Otherwise I like it.

I'm just going to outright assume the touch screen is "embedded" like the current version...

I have one thing to say.

F*CK YOU NINTENDO! F*CK YOU!

Seriously. GBASP was released two years after GBA. This is barely, BARELY over a year after the DS was released. I don't know why, but that irritates me. Possibly because I buy every system first generation, and I'm poor as dirt, so I can't afford to buy it again. Maybe I'm just spiteful.

The DS has always been a touch less comfortable than I would have liked so this should solve that problem quite nicely and at the same time look a whole lot more awesome.

You knew it was going to happen, so you have no right to complain.

Additionally, the difference between the GBA and the SP is the inclusion of a lighted screen, which is (and has always been) a "must-have" option.

This is just a smaller and more compact DS.  Other than that, it is hardly "must-have."  Had they added something that absolutely helped the portable system, THEN there might be an issue here.  All you are losing by not having this one is a little style, and even then, who in the hell cares.

Even though I have a DS, I'll probably plunk down for this one after it has a price drop of some sort.  Either that or I'll attempt to trade for it via various means.

I'm kind of mad that the people who bought the first one got screwed. But oh well. They shouldn't really sell both versions at the same time though. Since this new one is so similar. It IS a lot better if you pay attention to the button layout. The buttons being too close to the edge is solved by placing the buttons HIGHER. The DS buttons are too low.
Title: RE: DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Post by: Strell on January 26, 2006, 07:51:49 AM
Sigh, you DON'T GET SCREWED IF YOU BOUGHT THE FIRST ONE.

Do you KNOW WHY?

Because you got to and GET to play the games NOW as opposed to later.

Seriously, if some of you people are mad about this, I'd hate to see you buy your own computer, where new technology is out within (seriously) a month.

I'm so tired of this argument levelled against Nintendo.  It's not a valid argument and it never has been.  They aren't forcing you to upgrade, YOU JUST WANT TO.  There's a HUGE difference.

I didn't see people whining this much when they bought an HDless 360, even though I have a feeling the backlash on that is in the brewing stages....

To me the bottom touch screen looks raised and the top screen looks embedded a little deeper than normal to accomodate the bottom screen.

I know this is going to sound strange but I hope they keep a place to connect the tumb strap because I actually used that and I believe the smaller size will allow for better control with the thumb nub, seeing as how the distance from the edge of the screen to the edge of the system is smaller.

Also I hope they keep the headphone/headset jack the way it is even though thier has been no use for it yet.

Now the onlything I wonder about is the AC adapter. Is it going to use the same one or are they going to go with the micro or maybe a new style one. If they go with the micro one that means we might get GBA Multi-player ability. Although that probably won't happen.
Title: RE: DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Post by: Spak-Spang on January 26, 2006, 08:07:10 AM
DarkHeart:

That is what I am thinking.  I really think the bottom touch screen is raised.  This is probably done so that the D-Pad and buttons are more comfortable to hold, and the touch screen is seperated away from the action alittle better.

With the Top Screen embedded the system still shuts flat, and everything is safe, and more comfortable.

I must figure out a means to convince my wife for this redesign.  First, this new design and then buying a Revolution.  YIKES.  That goodness that the Nintendo Revolution isn't costing the same as the other systems.

Title: RE:DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Post by: JonLeung on January 26, 2006, 08:11:00 AM
It looks like it matches the Revolution in style.

I like it...now me and my brother can play multiplayer DS games without buying the same model of DS.  We got through the Game Boy games like Pokémon without needing to buy the same GBs.  Between the two of us, we've got a GB Pocket, GB Color, GBA, and GBA SP.  I have a DS, so a DS Lite would fill in the second half of that equation for when Pokémon Diamond/Pearl come out.

Post by: Stimutacs Addict on January 26, 2006, 08:19:55 AM
we'll be able to get a feel of how the Rev dpad feels.

I'm definitely buying one. I don't care. I've had a DS since launch day, and I'm sure my younger brother would like to have my current DS once I get a new touch-screen on this beast. Sure, nintendo is doing more of their usual business, but that new DS should silence the PSP rage in America.

And Nintendo should keep following in Apple's wake; their systems look sleek and tech-heads should dig it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the existing design, honestly.

The only thing that would've given me any cause to consider it is if they'd finally put in GB Color backwards compatibility... I'm sick of buying AA batteries so i can play Pokemon: TCG on an inferior screen.

Seems like some think Nintendo should release crappier revisions of their handhelds so current DS owners feel better.

Well if they didn't release any new revision then you'd still be playing on your current DS anyway so I don't know how a new revision changes that.

Am I the only one who hates (OK not hate - too strong) the white colour that they're going with for this and the Revolution? I really liked the black colour when they showed the Rev for the first time @ E3, but the white colour just looks horrible to me.

And the black may look good for the Rev, but I'm not sure it would look to good on the DS. I didn't really like the black colour on the Rev controllers; the silver ones were nice. Hmm.. guess I'll just have to wait to see the other colours. Or look at the black NRC again..

I'm looking forward to the new DS. I've had it since launch and I've always felt that it was in serious need of a redesign (purely cosmetic, I'm happy with the control layout). The launch units were literally a little "rough around the edges". I'll be trading in my original model at GameStop for credit towards the "DS Lite" once it becomes available in the U.S.

Good thing I held off for so long on the DS; now I know I won't be getting one till the Lite comes out. Whoever said the early bird catches the worm did NOT have this in mind, methinks.

Notice how similar it looks to the RevMote. Good move to standardardize the 'look and feel'. Both of them feel very 'iPod' right now.

oohhhhhhhhhhh

I can finally buy a DS....lite that is.

I love the little touches they gave the revision. Especially, the embevelled DS symbol on the top of the case.

Can you imagine how immensely popular this will be? There are many people on this forum alone (a Nintendo FUROM) that have not bought a DS yet. All of those Nintendo fans unwilling to purchase the system they so desperately desire will finally buy a system, not to mention the many people who thought the DS ugly (there are alot).

Give us one great title at this DS's launch (maybe Hunter's?) and it will break out like a plague.

Very cool redesign, that'll pull some people in.  I won't be getting it, since I've been perfectly satisfied with my DS.  However, my family really wants to get a DS to play while I'm at school, so I'll probably wait until this is available, so I'll sort of own one

Great Taste! Less Filling!

The power switch is now a flick-switch on the side and the stylus goes in sideways rather than in the top. Seen two colours so far including the white. White is best. I love my company!!!!"

I'm guessing this is real, though bias impression of the system.

I will admit, that though I like the black color idea better for the DS, I'm glad they didn't go with it as their 'color to market'.  Too many people would cry that they were just copying the PSP.

You may call me crazy, but I think it being black will allow for a better gaming experience.  I find that, in my opinion, having a darking border to a screen makes the screen appear to be of higher quality.

Darker colors contrast with the backlighting a lot better, that's why it works so well and it's also the reason I got an Electric Blue.  At the same time though, color ultimately comes down to opinion and what someone's looking for out of their handheld unit.  On that front, it's would be good to offer more than one color.
Title: RE: DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Post by: Requiem on January 26, 2006, 10:55:17 AM
Which they are...

It's been said that they will launch with 3 colors. None of those colors are confirmed, but white is an easy guess.

My others would be black and some color other than silver. They'll go with black because of how reminicent it will look when compared to the REV at E3. Plus it'll give a chance for direct sexy-ness comparison with the PSP (but really, if it looks even almost as sleek as the PSP, then you can cut another branch of the PSP's tree). Also, not silver because that has been basically the only color out (in the states at least) and they want the lite to be recognized as a different model.
Title: RE:DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Post by: JonLeung on January 26, 2006, 10:58:41 AM
I was just about to say that white is probably the first of many colours.

All the way back to the original Game Boy, Nintendo handhelds have come in multiple colours.  The DS already has red and blue and other special editions.  This new DS is looking like part of the new Nintendo family with its similar style as the Revolution, and it's even expected that the Revolution will come in multiple colours.

So for those of you who don't like the white, expect black (iPods come in black too, if Apple's style is what they're emulating) and probably platinum, and a slew of other colours before long.  Special editions, too.  A Super NES Limited Edition?  (I suppose that'd be more likely if they ported over more Super NES games, though, which seems unlikely once the Revolution's download service launches - unless they had DS features, oooh!)  These would probably be easier to make custom skins for, as well.

I was looking at the picture again, and the top part of the DS Lite is kinda shiny...
So do y'all think that its going to be Ipod shiny as well? Or is that just for the picture and the regular one is just like the regular white DS. No gloss (or whatever its called). It would be a lot better for the paint because the silver edges on my DS are fading out revealing the dull white underneath.
I like how they've gotten rid of how the screen looks like its made out of different parts instead of looking like one unit (the black around the normal DS screen).

Another thing...
Is nintendo going to cycle all the old DS systems out or keep selling them? It's a lot cheaper to produce these newer ones probably, and yeah...

Might as well let us store music on this thing while they're at it.  Seriously why not?  I know they only focus on gaming, but it seems it wouldn't be too hard to put some rudimentary mp3 functionality in the DS.

It's irritating, but it's still not any more functional that the current model. And if I get the urge, I can always do what I did with my SP and just trade in and upgrade.

I think this does fix the button problem. The buttons are now a third higher than before, meaning when you hold it your hands will angle up, same as a console controller. This means your hand won't have to twist to reach the A button. It'll be like the GCN's X button instead.

Isn't somebody supposed to be still working on a PDA application for the DS, heck wasn't there somekind of deal floating around involving Palm OS and the DS?

"Might as well let us store music on this thing while they're at it. Seriously why not? I know they only focus on gaming, but it seems it wouldn't be too hard to put some rudimentary mp3 functionality in the DS. "

I'm quite sure Nintendo has no intentions on making this thing over $150USD.  That and there's probably a good reason why the PSP has a separate processor for it's multimedia functions.   The best thing you can hope for is either Nintendo to bring a DS enhanced Play-Yan over or for someone else to make a media player for it.

since there doesn't appear to be any new functionality to this, I would hope the cost doesn't change.

I'd also like to see some more interesting colors than black white and platinum. There's a whole rainbow of colors out there guys, lets see some. Plus, isn't this handheld uniquely successful at gaining the female audience? Would it kill them to offer a pink one?

I'd love to get a Spice-colored DS... or a Hello Kitty themed pink and white one... that's the sort of stuff that turns peoples' heads...

How soon do you guys think the GBA will be phased out after this? I figure I'm gonna pick up one of the new SPs right before they run out (im thinkin for fifty bucks.)

I am actualy thinking this is good news, if the price of original goes down once it comes out I can afford to buy a dS for each nephew I have. I bought the Blue Ds and I will keep that as its my favorite out so far, unless they make a purple one since thast my favorite color but that wont happen anytime soon, if ever.

I still keep waiting for someone to make an application that connest to WFC thatlets your browse webpages. Then we can all log onto PGC form our DS and talk about how cool Nintendo is forma  Nintendo made system. yeah sweetness.

Whoa whoa... hold on there.

We don't even know where Nintendo is going with the Gameboy line yet. Is the DS the "next gameboy", or was Nintendo sincere about the whole "Third Pillar" thing.

If there's still a Nextgen Gameboy forthcoming, it probably wouldn't be until late '07 at the earliest, and I wouldn't expect to see the GBA entirely off the market until that happens.

It might make some sense for Nintendo, especially with the recent rumors floating around of an Xbox-branded handheld media device/game system. Coming up with a single screen GB4, then a few years into its lifespan whipping out a DS2 with GB4 backwards compatibility.

i'm not really sure if i like this new design or not....i think i have to see one in person. maybe its becouse i have no problems with the current design of the ds.

personaly i believe(or maybe i'm just hoping) that the next incarnation of the gameboy will play gamecube games. at least it would be nintendos best option in my opinion. it seems with the backward compatibility of revolution, that it would just be a logical choice(at least to me, i know lots of people dislike the disc format for a portable). i'm not sure how they could tranfer the controls to a portable, but it could be done.

Seems to me that Nintendo os trying to connect the dots between the Rev and the DS. Bet a dollar you'll be able to control certain Rev games with the DS. Further, watch Nintendo design a Rev to DS docking station for downloads and stuff, although they're both Wi-Fi so I guess thats not needed.

I like the design. I can trade my Ds in now and put it toward a...cough, um nevermind. I'll keep my dirty lil secret.

I really hope you can connect DS to Rev with Wifi.. that'd be rad. Maybe that's the non-gameplay related feature that's being withheld till E3. yay.

I can't wait to pick this up.  I'm going to keep my original DS around for sure...it'll really help me while review games, since I'll be able to access multiplayer modes by myself.  Besides, I always like having the "original" version of a system lying around, just for nostalgia's sake.

As for a release date, sure, it'll be after the March 2nd Japanese date.  But how long after?  Maybe March 20th, when both Tetris DS and Metroid Prime: Hunters are released?  Hmmm...

A smaller DS will be sweet because it will be that much more comfortable to hold while using the stylus.  Also it looks you'll be able to use the touchscreen a bit easier with your thumb because they carved off a quarter inch off each side as well it thinner.

I haven't checked but supposedly DS Lite is coming out on the same day as Children of Mana so that should already be a big push for the redesign. If Tetris(made by Nintendo) also comes out on the same day expect BIG #'s for all three!!!

"We don't even know where Nintendo is going with the Gameboy line yet. Is the DS the 'next gameboy', or was Nintendo sincere about the whole 'Third Pillar' thing."

Well in North America the GBA has continued to sell really well.  But how many major upcoming GBA games can you name?  I can't think of ANY unless Mother 3 gets localized.  Now the GBA will probably still be in stores for a little while like the NES, SNES and GBC continued to be sold well after being replaced, but as a supported system it has pretty much been replaced.  I think the whole "third pillar" stuff was a tactic to continue selling GBAs for a year or so after the DS launched.  It worked because the GBA sold really well but it has already co-existed with the DS for two Christmas seasons and I don't think it will make it to a third.

If you want a GBA SP with the brighter screen I say buy it now.  GBAs are probably going to quietly disappear during 2006.

Let's see...

Drill Dozer, from the makers of Pokémon...

Then there's one Pokémon game where its other half is the DS version...if it comes out in North America...

Has Juka and the Monophonic Menace come out yet?  It looks cute, there were lots of ads for it.

Did Scurge: Hive come out yet?  You know, that ismoetric Metroid-wannabe game?  If not, I'd count that.

Was Shantae Advance ever picked up by a publisher?

Okay, maybe I am grasping at straws now.  I'm pretty sure even you could've at least named Drill Dozer, though, Ian.  I'm disappointed.

And Final Fantasy V and VI.  How could I not list all these RPGs?

I never could finish Tales Of Phantasia on the Super Famicom.  Maybe I'll be able to do it on the GBA.

Maybe Ian doesn't count ports/rereleases/remakes/etc. as GBA games to look forward to, though.

Ohh man, that's just wrong. Just plain wrong. If its not good on the console, do they expect the handheld version to fare better? (Though 25 to life has been unproven...)

Hmmm, DS lite due out the 2nd in Japan? I'd be willing to wager March 20th for the North American release. That would make it a magical day indeed! Get a DS Lite, Tetris and Prime Hunters! Guess I should start saving...

Am I the only one surprised at how soon a redesign has happened for the DS?  It's only been about a year and two months and already there's a redesign.

I feel bad for those that just bought or got a DS to find out that there's a new version coming out months later.  Ouch.

The new design does look nice though.

why? its not as big a diference as GBA to GBA SP was and I liked original GBA better anyways. But if they make purple I will get DS Light for sure. Also if regular DS price drops I might gt a few more for relatives and such.

Wait, what...why? I loved my SP, I took it every where. It was a huge imporvment over the GBA, and one that I easily justified slapping down the money for when looking at the number of benefits (not having to use battries was great, not to mention stuff like the lighted screen.. which was optional and could be turned off anyway).

I really love this new design, and the moment that the code name "Nintendo DS" started appearing online I knew that when ever it launched it would get a cool redisign with in 2 years or so.  Not only that but I knew I would end up buying both. Im very happy with the new look and can't wait for it, this is coming from  a person with 3 DS's already being used frequently in one house.  I figure the sexier look and Pokemon will allow this to over throw any competition there is, and ever will be(this generation).

Now I know Nintendo has said alot of things about 3rd pillars and the DS not being the succesor to the GBA or something along them lines. But does anyone still believe that?! This is our new GameBoy wether you want to believe it or not. I say they said all that as a clever ploy to throw of Sony during its development of the PSP. Could you imagine if Nintendo decided to release a new "GB" as early as 08? I mean, would it just be a better PSP or would it have all the gizmos of the DS? I could never see a future hand held from Nintendo lacking the DS's abilites. And since we most likely won't ever see a Nintendo handheld with just the power of something like the GameCube I really don't know what people are assuming Nintendo is cooking up. Is any of this coming through alright? Im not sure if im getting it all out, but take that as you will.  If Nintendo releases a  brand new  portable system befor the DS has at least 5 or 6 years on it I will... feel very stupid.

There's also GBA version of Top Spin 2 coming out and Dragon Ball Advance Adventure.

We don't really have much data on upcoming games past April yet, but that's what E3 is for.

The GBA is still a viable and lucrative platform with a huge installed base...

Possibly the US unveiling of the DS Lite on Feb. 9th..

The latest issue of Nintendo Power reminds readers to keep an eye on Nintendo.com on February 9. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of marketing, will be giving a speech about "Expanding the Market for Interactive Entertainment" at the DICE Summit in Henderson, Nevada. Reggie's speech will be 45 minutes long, starting at 10:30AM and ending at 11:15AM. In the speech, it's likely Reggie will be highlighting Nintendo's strategy for its Nintendo DS, Wi-Fi Connection, and Nintendo Revolution.
