Title: Have the Gamecube SD cards been confirmed a no-go?

Way back towards the release of the Gamecube, Nintendo got alot of us some screenshots of a nifty memory card SD adapter it developed with Panasonic, I believe.  The possibilities of SD cards would be nearly endless.  It'd be like having a portable hard drive.  Sadly, I haven't heard even one mention of this for at least eight months.  Anyone know if Nintendo has totally scrapped the idea?  I understand that SD cards are expensive, but I think it's still an amazing idea.

The idea is still around, but dormant.  Maybe with Mother 3 and Animal Crossing 2 that will change?

It's still on the Nintendo site but I highly doubt anythign is going to happen with it.  Maybe the next console but not with the GC.

It's too costly and to me much more of a gimmick than anything else.   Sure the possibilities are out there but for the normal gamer they wouldn't really make use of it.

Theres already the GBA-GC link up and hten the GBA player to work with.  They need to vastly improve the GBA-GC link capabilities right now... its pretty worthless at the moment.  Sure there are some games that make some weak attempts but still not great.  I would really love somethign where I could continue the game some way on the go.   Furthermore, too many gimmicks already making it seem like a toy.

Grey, you really know how to prick a gamer's heart, don't you?  Little mentions of Mother 3, etc.  Very cruel.  Very cruel, indeed.

Well, there's always E3 to look toward, but since there's been no mention of the SD cards or the SD adapter since their original unveiling at Spaceworld 2000, I wouldn't hold my breath.  Maybe they'll do something similar for the next console, however.

Scyth3r:  Miyamoto has mentioned a game that apparently really takes advantage of the GC-GBA link-up, and it will be shown at E3, so look out for it then.  Less than 3 months to go....

I'm not worried about SD cards right now. I still have over 180 blocks left on my 251 card so it will last me a while. I guess if I owned a lot of sports titled I'd be complaining, but... I don't.

I hope they do release it in the near future. Would that allow us to download new levels and characters off the internet like PS2 and Xbox will be able to do (Splinter cell etc)? If so, we need this adaptor!!

We all know around here that Nintendo can keep secrets like Fort Knox, even if its not all that shocking. So don't lose faith yet.

Yeah, exactly matt!  That's the kind of possibilities I'm talking about.  If they don't release it on this system, I'm sure they will on the next one, either this, or a hard drive of some sort.

It wouldn't be the first time Nintendo announced a peripheral that wouldn't make it to the market.  Everyone is all excited about the possibility of what an SD Card adapter could do for their GameCube, but considering there isn't a single mention from Nintendo of what it WILL do, I'd temper some of that enthusiasm.  I'm not going to hold my breath for it ... SD Cards are still just a bit too expensive for the most part.

i have 8 games and they all fit on my mem51
o bought a 251 but its not really been used yet

but i plan to buy like 10 games atleast this year, so it will soon be used alot

Considering it's already been over a year of the Gamecube's 5 year life span, I'm beginning to doubt it will come out as well, but it's fun to speculate.  And Nintendo HAS been known to surprise us.  I like how some people are treating Nintendo as some regular company who follows some set formula.  They still do things without warning.  Gameboy Player anyone?  I'd just be satisfied if they implement a hard drive on their next system.

Well, the SD card adapter WAS a good idea on paper, but in reality... egh.

It'd be a great peripheral idea if it came out at launch, but if Nintendo's planning on releasing it- well- it takes at least a year (usually two) to develop a game.  If they were to release it tomorrow, there wouldn't be many companies outside of Nintendo that could REALLY take advantage of it.  Don't get me wrong, I could see where a GC Pokemon game that works with the ECard peripheral could really benefit from such a device (scan Pokemon, get them in the game later even if Nintendo hasn't invented them yet, battle it out with them at a friend's house).

Still, by the time it would get any meaningful support, Nintendo will have moved on to their next system.  You figure it out.

Any Sega or EA sports game eats up the entire 251 memory card.    I have to choose between Madden or NBA 2K3 always...
