Title: Main Menu....
Post by: Requiem on January 07, 2006, 08:53:29 PM
The cube load up screen was boring. Although better that the PS2, it wasn't very original or aesthetically (sp?) pleasing.

Anyway, as I was reading up on some new....news, I found these fake home screens.

Don't look at the video link....you'll just end up pissing yourself off. Instead, scroll down a bit to a post with a series of screens.

These are quite beautiful. I love the Virtual Console screen. I could see myself spending hours just looking at all the box art for past games and reading there description (as well as shopping).

Anyway, enjoy.....

Yeah I've seen those before and I love them, and it really gets me thinking of the Rev interface. I also liked the design in the GumShu fake..

I really enjoy the Gamecube menu.  It served it's function, kept the whole cube theme, and had an analog clock in the background to boot.

All admittedly fake, but all so beautiful...

I will point out that these screens are quite obvious rip-offs of the PSP's main menu.

I liked the GC's menu.

Those concepts look too much like a Mac or desktop enhancer. The font is too small for a TV and it's not immediately obvious where the menu is located. Also, there doesn't seem to be any thought on how you could control it with the gyros instead of the dpad.

If you don't like the GameCube menu, you haven't booted with four controllers.

These all pale in comparison to GC's sleek menu...

I'm curious about that as well.  Not curious to drive to Nashville right this moment and try it but curious none the less.  How does it change?  Is it like the alternate Gamecube start theme.  (If you haven't heard it, I get a kick out of it, hold down z when you start you cube.)

Yeah.  It's nothing that special.  Hold down Z right after turning on the Cube to get the sound of a kid's laughter (it's pretty amusing).  Hold down Z with four controllers to get...another sound, which I forget and am too lazy to try right now.

Haha, oh yeah.  From that Pokemon Stadium minigame where you have to eat food.

Taiko drum. And the menu in general is well presented. All the sub-menus are easily accesible from the main menu. Nice sound and visuals. Both the PS2 and Xbox menus are fugly. And no one likes that robotic voice crap with the Xbox. So. I rest my case.

The xbox 360's menu is really nice. In fact, it's the best part of the entire system (excluding games). I expect the same from the REV....

Is that too much to ask?

I've seen it, like it aesthetically. But I agree it doesn't seem best suited to the gyro (I think they were actually made before the controller was revealed.) Anyway, I've been thinking that I'd like something like this:

(try to ignore the fact that it's a rushed paint drawing).

The idea is that you'd have transparent cubes (okay, cuboids), laid out in a similiar fashion to the DS menu, that would have 3-d representations of things floating inside of them. Then, you'd have a pointer that you could move up/down/left/right, and, just for fun, forward and back, to select what you want. You move the pointer to a cuboid, te cuboid highlights itself, you press a. Ta-da.

As a bonus, this system would help teach people how to use the revmote.

Hehe, with your Paint version it reminds me of Windows 3.1...

Heh. If anyone wants to make a nice photoshop version with transparancies, shadows, a floating hand instead of a pointer, subtle tones, and a silky yet full body that flows freely and doesn't tangle, feel free.

I hope the screens are representative of whatever you are selecting. For example the nes, snes, n64 virtual consol screens should have the style of the consol or the graphical bit level.

I believe the cube bootup screen was alright. There wasn't really much to do with the interface,, other than manage saves, set the clock, screen positioning, etc. so it was boring to play around with. No with the rev, there's gonna be all sorts of crazy stuff to modify, methinks. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will make the whole interface skinnable, and then sell new skins online (i figure 99 cents to 2 dollars is ok)

The Rev should boot-up like Mario 64 booted up.

Immediately you get a fun little game to play with. In fact, they should just ressurect the Mario face-pulling game for the Rev's pre-menu title screen!

I personaly thought the cube interface was lots of fun to "play" with, in that you get to spin the cube around and it's easy to find your way to every option using it.  Granted, it didn't offer a whole lot of options, but it's just an interface for managing a game system, not Windows XP.  Simple and functional, Nintendo did it right.

Did you guys read the IGN article about this they have some prices and there ridiculus when you compare them to what we've been talking about on the forums.  If that's the prices then this will be a flop more then likely.  I luxury services like fine wines and cheeses.

What the hell?  There's no way I'm paying $19.99 for a freaking N64 game.

Yeah, horrible pricing. At that rate, I'd rent IF anything at all. They have to look at the big picture and realize that on-demand service is designed for convenience, volume, and anti-piracy. How many $20 games would people really buy?  There's no way. I don't want to play old games *that* much.

Edit: I've said it before. The virtual console needs to sell Revolutions, not the other way around. It's the iPod/iTunes model. They need to be cheap enough so people are tempted to buy a Revolution and a lot of these games. They will kill much of the benefit of the VC with $20 games.

That is a bit much. I could see $8, maybe $10-15 for the more popular games. But $20 does seem just a little high.

As for the main menus, I think the GCN had the best one to date. I'd say Dreamcast had the second best, while I haven't seen the X-Box's I imagine they're just like PS2. And PS2 had a boring menu. Those fake Rev menus look bad... just plain ugly. Boring, plain, unoriginal, I really hope the menu doesn't turn out like that.
