Title: Gamecube Memory Card Configuration
Post by: SonicAdvDX on December 06, 2005, 10:47:56 AM
Okay, I have a friend who, like myself, is a huge Nintendo loyalist. I was talking to him today about a popular Japanese anime, Naruto, that we both watch. He mentioned that he owned an imported copy of a Naruto game for Gamecube, and that he had re-configured his Gamecube mamory card to European, so that he could save both US and Japanese Gamecube game save files. Does anyone know how I could do this, and would I lose all my current save data by doing it?

I believe you need a Freeloader boot disc. Procedure details should be its manual.

I don't know about that, but I bought a cheap ($2) used Official Memory Card 59 for my imported game.
Granted, I've only imported one game and likely will not be importing any more, but hey... It works for me.

Apparently Japanese save games can co-exist happily alongside US / PAL saves on a single memory card.
There is, however, a small chance (that appears to be random - very low %) that the game will try to reformat your memory card. The writing will be in japanese and in red so when the message comes up either choose the kanji for 'no' or the safer option of just resetting your cube.
Im a wuss so I just used a separate memory card for my JPN saves, can't trust that my bro / friends wouldn't accidentally reformat.
EDIT: Naruto doesn't take up many blocks either 2 - 3, i think, so you could just get a memory card 59 for cheap.
Also as said above make sure you pick up a freeloader / action replay to play imports.

I've heard that a few select Japan titles (in my case, Donkey Konga 3) won't save on a US system using a freeloader disc, only on a system with a region switch. It will make a spot on the memory card, but it won't save any progress.

Yep yep...Donkey Konga import + memory card with finished saves of OoT, Master Quest, Wind Waker, and a hell lot of otheres = many tears.
