Title: Xbox 360 Kiosk. Lovely.
Post by: KDR_11k on November 28, 2005, 07:51:53 AM
Okay, just came across the first x360 kiosk I've seen here. Someone at MS Europe is nuts. The system offered a list of six racing games and two EA sports titles. Way to sell a system, Microsoft! Must be some stereotype about Europe, the demo disc Sony sent me when I registered my PS2 contained only racing and sports games, too.
I mean, WTF? I can see why they didn't include Call of Duty 2 (if you put up a game rated 16 or over on a kiosk you're required to make sure everyone who uses it is old enough and CoD2 is rated 18) but what about Kameo and King Kong? Is Kameo delayed for Europe or what? Did they decide that those games suck after reading all the complaints on the net and removed them from the demo disc?
Microsoft managed to make the x360 look worse than the PSP.
Oh and someone apparently started NfS:Wanted, it showed some prerendered video that the hardware could never render in realtime. So that's how MS is going to woo people? Show prerendered footage but put an XBox next to it so it looks like the console is rendering that?

I played Perfect Dark at one yesterday. I was not overwhelmed so I will not be spending like $500 to get it!

FF7 sure is awesome!!

Hardly new tactics, but people fall for it EVERY FREAKING TIME...Aw, crap, the logic train left an hour ago!

SUPER: I didn't watch the console market back then, did Sony place Playstation kiosks in stores that played the prerendered footage to make it look like ingame graphics?

Yeah, they ran TV ads and in-store reels and everyone flipped out

Flipped out, landed on their heads, further crippling the railroad tracks on which the logic train rode.
And gamefaqs will never run out of forumers again.

SUPER: There's a difference between showing a video on TV and showing it on the hardware itself. Anything can be shown on TV but most people would expect the hardware to render game footage.

tis true, unfortunately there are a lot of people here in the states that fall for that kind of thing.
Guy 1: "That Xbox next to the tv, so it must be rendering the graphics!! It looks so real!" Guy 2: "Umm, thats not a TV, your looking out the window"

haha nice one man. Tis true, the average Joe Shmoe consumer is pretty stupid. I can't remember the countless times I've ran into "confused" (to put it lightly) people around the gaming sections in stores.

I found a good kiosek around where I live. A Wal-Mart has one of the system that overheat and crash less then an hour after being turned on. It is always in that state when I come around. I guess it is simulating what some players a going through right now.

There'd be one game that would make me play on an x360 kiosk immediately: Prey! Of course I'll buy the PC version in the end (15 Euros cheaper, mouselook, moddable, ...) but a Prey demo would rock.

Upon closer examination it turns out the x360 kiosks here have zero playable demos. The games section only contains trailers. THAT is pathetic.
Also, the console launched here today. The games go for 68 Euros. They're insane, that's the only explaination. We're talking about games like Quake 4 or GUN that have PC versions for 45 Euros available!

My conversion factors aren't what they used to be...what's 68 Euros in USD?
In America, Gun has some really weird prices. It's $40 on PC, $50 on GCN, PS2 and Xbox and $60 on Xbox 360. Crazy.

It's like 80 bucks...

For currency conversion you can just type "68 € in $" (you can write Euros, Dollars, USD, EUR, or whatever else you prefer) into Google.

Hmmm, interesting how everyone is so quick to call people stupid for not knowing that much about something that they just don't care as much about. I am sure if I were talking about almost any sport, I'd sound like a total moron, just because I don't care that much about them. They entertain me, but I don't care about them much. And everyone wonders why gamers tend to be seen as elitists...
But regardless of that fact, MS is using underhanded tactics to sell the system, just like everyone else. Hell, even Nintendo announces enormous goals that are always scaled back.

Eh, its not so much that people in America are dumb, it's just that because there's more people here. I think the ratio of 'dumb-to-intellegent' is about the same in every country.

yeah, I know what you mean, americans being dumb isnt nessecarily true, but its just a stupid stereotype that is fun to make fun of, all of the major countries have such stereotypes.

It's not that americans are physiologically less intelligent ....it's just that our educational system sucks and we have an ingrained anti-intellectual culture

Is this the Xbox 360 thread then? OK. Seen this yet? OK.

Since Renny decided this is the Xbox 360 thread, I'll ask my question here.
What's the battery life of the wireless XBox 360 controller? I haven't read anything about it. 2 hours? 6? 10? 100? How long's it take to fully charge?

I think the box (or the demo kiosk) gives an estimate, I remember noticing that it's less than thew Wavebird's promised 80 hours. Either 60 or 24 was it.

Since this directly contradicts MS XBox 360 demo kiosk, I'll post this here
Quote When Matt’s Xbox 360 stopped playing games, a customer service rep told him to orient his console horizontally. The result? One working Xbox 360. The customer service rep apparently told him, here’s the shocker, that the Xbox 360 isn’t designed to play games vertically.
There are reportedly no stabilizers to allow for vertical play, or to stop discs from scratching when the console is vertical.

I don't think I've ever seen a picture of an Xbox 360 that wasn't on its side. I wonder if this counts as false advertising?

It sounds like it, and I hope someone try's to sue over it, class action worldwide lawsuit.
But only cause I think it would be funny, and MS has too much money. I mean seriously, it would have cost about.... 1 or 2 cents per Xbox 360 to add a few foam pads to hold the disc in place?
I hope someone makes it cost alot more than that now(re-calls, production halts & more bad press).

so its has to play horizontaly and not vertical which allows at least some space saving? Maybe its a reason for japan's lackluster numbers, lol nah http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/675/675386p1.html

Isn't the thing mounted vertically in the demo kiosks? Wouldn't that count as defining the vertical position as the normal orientation of the system?
Imagine demo kiosks with big labels on the console "don't do this at home"...

Since this is the "official" 360 thread, and I didn't want to make a new one, here's some interesting news about the 360 and HD concerning King Kong...
Quote King-Kong, developed by Ubisoft, was one of the hot titles that populated XBox 360's launch game list. But now, officials at Ubisoft say gamers should avoid the XBox version.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that King-Kong on the X360 can appear too dark on standard TVs, making the game "unplayable." "I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't see it when we were developing the game," Guillemot said. ... The problem comes out of the fact that the team who developed the game didn't test it on ordinary TV sets but only on high definition TV.
Now that's just ridiculous...

It must be pitch black if Ubisoft considers it "too dark to play". Ubisoft games are already dark enough to be unplayable without turning up the brightness.
