Title: So anyone got a crashing XBox 360?
Post by: BranDonk Kong on November 23, 2005, 05:35:35 AM
I just read on another site...that I'm pretty sure I shouldn't post a link to, that there are MANY people whose Xbox 360s have been crashing left and run, with several games. I believe there's also a forum for this on http://www.teamxbox.com - just thought it was kind of funny. The 360 seemed like it was rushed for the holidays before it was released, and now it's crashing all over the place whch makes it prety obvious there wasn't much quality control before the launch.

Microsoft: You thought the SOFTWARE was rushed? Wait 'til you see the hardware!

This launch was obviously rushed, and I am sure Microsoft has egg on its face...but it won't hurt them too bad.

Well correction, it won't hurt them too bad as long as they fix the problems for the second and third shipments...they have already got all their first shipments sold out.

The biggest surprise for me is the horrible 5 million world wide production by June 2006...that is a pretty small number for the availablility of a World Wide Product.

Microsoft isn't going to get the great headstart everybody thought they would have.

If Sony or Nintendo launches around or before June, I think Microsoft could potentially lose their entire lead.

I just read more and more reports as well. One person called MS and they said it's the hard drive, so they take out the hard drive and it works fine, put it back in and the system crashes in minutes...so MS made people pay an extra $100 for a component that actually ruins the gameplay. Yes I know every system has faults at launch, but NEVER has there ever been a next-day litany of complaints like this at any console launch.

That made me laugh more than it should have. Is that a HDTV in the Sample Materials?

Yikes.  You know, I was thinking last night that it would be really easy to buy a few of these and Ebay them and then keep one for myself, but I don't want Ebay members whining that I sold them a faulty system.
Way to go MS!

Apparently the power brick is overheating. MS really has bad luck with those things.

I think this news item gives a good poiter as to why the 360's are crashing, and I feel will still be (migth be) crashing in the future...

Why Microsoft won't give XBox360 power numbers.

This been the most inportant part...
Quote

Now, there are a few things that affect yield. The first is defect rate, whether it works or not. The second is the speed at which it can run, when you see a Pentium 4 at 3.8GHz and another at 3.6GHz, it isn't because Intel wants to sell you a range of options, it is because they have so many that will run at each speed, and price them accordingly. Consoles don't have the luxury of multiple speeds, they run at a frequency, and will run at that frequency for their entire life. A console CPU will run at that speed or it will not, and if it doesn't, there is not much use for it.

Now, the oldest overclocking trick in the book is to take a CPU and pump up the voltage to make it run faster. If you want your P4/3.0 to be a P4/4.0, you up the power and pray that the smoke does not get out before you can run SuperPi. The same thing is true for console CPUs, if you want more of them to run at a clock of X, you relax the power requirements.

Which is a good poiter as to whats going on with thoses 360's and some power supplies...

*hope I did not brake the posting rules with the linking... and probable execive quote...

I don't think the power of the PPEs is much of a problem. Isolated, that is. Three of them drain a lot of power nonetheless, GPUs are notorious powermongers and I think there are reports of the harddrive pushing it over the edge.

Kid takes pictures of self playing Xbox 360 and put them on internet months in advance.
Kid's stepdad is responsible for engineering power source on Xbox 360.
Xbox 360 has possible issues with power source.

Anybody else see the connection here?  Add, "Stepdad gets fired" in there.

Seriously, I don't know if the power source is really the problem here, but in any case, console launches and defects go hand-in-hand these days.

i wonder what the defect rate of GCN's were at launch, has anyone here had a GCN crash after the first month of owenership or a PS2?  I dunno if its just me but i haven't heard of a defect in a game system until xbox came into the picture, followed by the DS dead pixel and the PSP's various problems.

In a way... no... then again... if they do want to get higher yield... which is more than likely. Like the what The Inquirer reports:
Quote

So, for the XBox CPU, if you want higher yields, you bump up the power.

You see... they have evidently go for overcloking the cpu's that have come out running bellow there target rage of 3.2GHz... say overclocling those that came out at 2.8GHz over to their target of 3.2GHz  in orther to have enough cpu's to meet the demand... Considering that the cpu's are multicore, if you got the cores all messed up (each running at diferent frequencies) overclokling could get messy... cpu's could get overheated easily, and if the colling system doesen't handle the higher than expected temperatures... you get an easy XBakeoven360...

The power supply will need to output diferent wattage... which with some software it can be controll... If some consoles end up with cpu's that are so undercloked, it would need more power than expected to compensate, maybe the power supplies have trouble outputing the power for long periods of times (what would happen if you try to overcloke your PC with a weak/cheap power supply)... which could end in overheating the powersupply... or you new XBar B Q starter... for that hard to ignite wood...

I do think this is the reason why there are so many XBricks overheating or having glitches...

I read a poll on another site (can't link) that had the question do you have an Xbox360? With the possible answers as 1. yes and it works fine 2. yes and it has tech issues 3. no not yet, and 4. no and I don't want one.

26% said yes, and it works fine, but 6.5% said yes, and it has tech issues. Add that up and it's 32.5% of the people polled as having an Xbox360, and of that percentage, 20% of them are defective. I know you can't take this as scientific fact, but even if it's anywhere close to this, then that's completely unacceptable. It's definitely not "a few isolated issues" like MS claims. Chances are if it was a few, those few wouldn't even have the means to complain on internet sites like they have been. Try a few thousand, MS.

I dont see the point of not releasing the voltage of the chips im sure sony can figure this out just by using the right tools. I mean they have how many engineers working over at sonys head quarters. Im pretty sure you can just connect cables at the right place and find out how much power is flowing through.

I think this person had a very bad problem with his

I have a launch GCN and it has never given me any problems itself.  I've had a used game that was messed up, but the system is fine.  But I have a back-up just the same.

I seem to recall Dreamcast and PS2 both had some disc read errors or something at launch time.  Let me check...

Edit:
OK, the Dreamcast itself was fine, but a lot of the first batch of software was defective...possibly around 20% of certain titles like Sonic Adventure and Ready 2 Rumble.

I couldn't find a specific news article on PS2 launch problems, but according to Wikipedia: "There were a few problems around the launch of the system. Only a few million users had obtained consoles by the end of 2000 due to Bugs in the manufacture of the product."

I also have a launch GCN, and the only problem it has is that the "open" button sticks sometimes (which is really only a nuisance).  Also it crashed once when my cousin accidently tripped over the controller wire and knocked it off of a table 1 to 2 feet high.  Other than that it has worked perfectly, and I fully expect it to keep working until the rev comes out.

Edit: also, none of my friends who have a GC have had any problems either. None that I know about anyway.

I have a launch GCN and I had Disc Read Error problems about 3 years later.  My friend who came with me to get his GCN is also now getting DREs.  I don't know if it was a bad batch but still 3-4 years later isn't bad.

I had that same problem with the one I got at launch about 3 years ago, thought Bloody Roar was the cause at the time as it kept giving that error when it crashed at the character selection screen (as that game sometimes does). However, the one I got as a replacement has worked perfectly since then and I have had it for some time now.

Yeah, I ended up sending mine in to be repaired.  They must have changed the insides because I now have a purple menu screen where I used to have a pink.  No problems since.  Do the generation two gamecubes have a purple selection screen?

I think mine always had a blue or purple screen, bought it on launch day.  Though I'm not that observant.

I've had a couple of minor problems, may have been the software's fault, even.  Zelda crashed once, and for some reason my copy of Beyond Good and Evil won't work with controller port 1 when I start it up, and randomly changes to other controller ports at certain times, like when starting the minigame at the bar.

Never had any problems, heh I still have my working nes and snes, just the controllers on snes aren't responsive and tend to stick. thus I need new controllers for it, heh.

N64 works fine as well. Gotta love that hologram MM cart

The results are about the same still, the total number of votes is 1356 as of this post. I guess I can post a link since the site doesn't technically promote warez, it's a good source for homebrew XBox news and the such - http://xbox-scene.com - Hell, it was even featured on TechTV a couple years ago.

I've heard claims that stores are reporting 30% defect rates...

I'd consider the poll skewed, someone with a defecive box is much more likely to vote than someone without one plus there's people who just vote something to further their agenda (MS fans voting "no problems", MS haters voting "mine broke").

Power!=Voltage.

As for finding the voltage that is being sent through to the cpu, if you can find the right leg on the VCPU controller, you should be able to find the voltage. I haven't really seen the motherboard of the console, so I can't say for sure where that is.

I also don't think sony really cares what voltage microsoft is running their chips at, as it has absolutely no baring on their chips.

I think I read that the Xbox 360 is actually bigger than the Xbox, just that the design makes it seem smaller.  I don't remember if the size was with/without the power brick combined.

And for the picture of the busted system, I read that someone bought the system after getting money via donations and after purchasing it, took it outside and smashed it up in front of everyone still waiting in line.  I mean he can do whatever he wants with his money and purchase, but why for God's sake would you do that.  I mean if you have no intention of keeping it to play, then just don't bother.  Some poor smuck could have gotten that system instead, only to want to do the same because it fricked up on him/her.

I believe this is the video in question.  Somewhere there are people starving... 400 dollars wouldn't solve that but it is a much better cause than a smashed xbox.  Then there is the 'get triple what you paid for it' on ebay thing.  Sigh...what non conformists do with their money...

Still, you have to admit it was interesting.  However I would be extremely PO'ed if I was an xbox fan waiting in line, I pity the poor schmuck who was in line right behind the person who got the last 360, then walked out into the parking lot to see that one get smashed.

This type of sh!t happens with every launch, with all of the xbox and ps fanboys out there, I will not be surprised at all to see this happen to the revolution when it comes out.
