Title: Mother 3 to finally become reality early next year!
Post by: Bill Aurion on November 04, 2005, 02:00:46 AM: It's been ages since we last heard of Mother 3, or Earthbound 2 for those never hearing of it...First announced as an N64 title in the first year of the system's existence, the project fell behind schedule as the development team was inexperienced with the new "invention" of 3D...In 2000, the project was cancelled, in which the title "Mother 3" wouldn't pop up till 3 years later at the end of the Mother 1+2 GBA game released in Japan...Since then, we haven't gotten a single screenshot, hence Mother 3 being the perfect example of "vaporware." But no longer as Shigesato Itoi (the series' creator for the uninitated) has finally spoken on the project...

In any case, we're working on Mother 3. I'm happy as well that it's reached the point where we can make an announcement. Thank you to all who have waited patiently. Please forget about it again for a short while."

(Considering Ninty is giving us wacky titles like Drill Dozer and Chibi Robo, let's hope the game is localized alongside the Mother 1+2 pack...)

The screenshots are cool, they make me want the game a lot.

They spent the time and money to translate Tales of Phantasia, a game made by Namco a third party company, but wont even bother to translate a game made by one of their OWN IN HOUSE STUDIOS.

I suspect maybe one of the translators works on it during his lunch hours and begs Reggie to release it twice a week. We might see it yet, but I don't think it's a priority. I'll keep holding out hope until sometime in January.

Surely with the success it was in Japan and the fact that it's a GAMEBOY GAME, that would more than recoup the translation costs...VC makes the most sense, but then they'd have to redo the game so fit the larger resolution (I guess).

In comparison this is at least a franchise game that some people recognize and Earthbound already has a cult fanbase in North America. Maybe Earthbound on the VC will sell well enough to convince NOA otherwise (though who knows when that will be available). As an RPG the translation would take longer than some other titles so I'll give them some slack there.

It just seems like with Earthbound NOA is using Earthbound's original sales from 1995 as an indication of interest in North America. Since FFVII the market for an RPG in North America has vastly improved. If NOA used their wacky Earthbound logic for everything Pokemon and Fire Emblem would still be stuck in Japan.

What I find dumb is that you can name everything at the beginning of the game using English, but there is no option to play in English. Why have English alphabet if it's only used when giving names at the very beginning?
