Title: USB Adapter Price!
Post by: Artimus on November 03, 2005, 10:22:30 PM
Amazing.ca has the price for the USB adapter listed as 42.99, regular 57.99. This means it should be on sale in the US for either 29.99 or 34.99. Neither of those are bad prices, and certainly more reasonable than the UK price!

So it's usually $58? And down do $43, but that's still pretty expensive, considering many routers are cheaper. I was hoping for a $30-35CDN price point. Oh well, better than 30 Pounds in the UK

Come on, Ninty needs to make a profit off this...Plus, it works for both DS and Revolution...

"Come on, Ninty needs to make a profit off this"

Why does it have to be a PROFIT?  Why can't they just break even?  It's really just a tool.  The profit should come from (in theory) increased game sales as a result of online functionality.  If they sell me the adapter then I'm going to buy games that use it.  That's where they get their money.

I'll probably still get this but I'm going to be grumbling and swearing under my breath as I do.  This is the cost of a whole game for something they probably should have included with Mario Kart.

Nintendo always trying to make money off of absolutely everything played a big part in why connectivity flopped.  Sure a lot of people had GBAs but few wanted to spend the $30 CAN it cost to get the cable.  Had they included the cable with every GBA it would have been way more popular.  Maybe that would have cost them some money initially but it could have made connectivity a killer feature on the Cube.  That would mean more Cube sales and thus more games which means more money.

This isn't going to screw up DS online or anything but short-sighted penny-pinching is a habit they have to break.

Well yeah, but a router works for the DS, the Revolution, AND everything else Wi-Fi enabled. I know, I know, it's really simple to use and it's secure, but still..

Where do you shop!? I paid $14.99 for the one I bought. FutureShop charges $19.99, but WalMart would be cheaper.

There's huge, huge difference here - you don't need this to get online.

You needed the cable to connect two gameboys.  You don't need this to get online.  In fact, why anyone of any reasonable intelligence would get this is beyond me.  You can get a full-featured wireless router for the same price, and then you're not introducing latency by adding a superfluous hop in between you and your pipe.

If you can figure out how to set up a router (HINT: it's really easy) you do not need this.*

Nintendo always trying to make money off of everything is the only reason they're still around.  It's what gives them the luxury of letting something like connectivity flop.  They can weather a flop, which is what lets them do crazy things like the DS and the Revolution in the first place.

*Unless you need to use the DS in places that require a web browser for billing or enablement, i.e. a lot of hotels, McDonalds, etc.

Yeah okay if Nintendo was in the USB dongle selling business then yeah they would have to make a profit.  But this is just an accessory for their games, which is where they make their money from.  The idea of taking a hit on something and making it up on games is common in the game industry.  I'm just suggesting they cut us a break and make it more affordable instead of being so gung ho on making a profit from absolutely anything.

After all with the Rev they have no good reason to be wi-fi only so it's kind of a rip-off to force us to go wireless and then charge a fairly high price for an accessory that does the job.

Buffalo sells their non-Nintendo ones for an average of $50.

But do those work for anything like routers?

The Buffalo ones are USB-key sized routers. They're the Nintendo router minus the Nintendo speciality. Basically Nintendo is selling them cheaper than the original maker.

Guys, wait until Nintendo gets the Wi-Fi site opened up.  The USB adapter only works with Nintendo devices, but on the site, they have a whole list of recommended routers and comments for routers that don't perform as well if you already own one.

"Basically Nintendo is selling them cheaper than the original maker."

That's not possible because it would mean Nintendo is doing something right.

Edit: Nice avatar, Bloodworth.

In retail stores after Prime is released? Sounds like a supply issue

I don't know how you people can stand living in Canada, I'd go nuts with your prices.

Wha? Does your second paragraph have anything to do with your first? And yeah, it's actually cheaper here...

Sorry, no 2 seperate points

My bad on the exchange rate though I'll have to go nuts for entirely different reasons.
