I just love the art direction the team is taking with this game...A lot of heart is going into it...And the characters are really adorable to boot! ^_^

The character design is pretty good, but the gameplay screenshots look pretty standard.  I'm not sure if there's anything to really get excited about yet.

...What's with that clown/pirate in the first scan?

That's Famitsu's "mascot"...

And uh, what's wrong with the gameplay shots?  They look like a gorgeous SNES game, which is what I WANT from a Mana game...

Early next year in Japan, I believe...

That mascot looks like a real-life version of the JUMP pirate...

Not much to see in the screenshots.

They are quite detailed, which I like.  But the art direction is kinda blah.  It's kind of hard to tell from the limited number of locations (there appear to be only two locations shown--a goldish dungeon and a blue cave) but they just seem uninspired.  As of right now, I don't see anything that separates this game from a dozen or so excellent RPGs for the SNES and GBA.

So it looks like other excellent games?  What's the problem with that?

Except that...um....it will be on the DS.

Ever heard of the law of diminishing returns?  I've already played a dozen excellent 2D RPGs that look exactly like this.  Therefore, another one (regardless of how excellent it may be) just doesn't get my juices flowing.  I want new experiences.  That's why I'm so excited about games like Trauma Center and Phoenix Write.  They bring something new to the table.

This is a zelda game with hit points. Though if it's half as awkward, simple, convoluted and poorly designed as its predecessor it won't be worth anyone's time.

vudu: With some luck it'll use the DS's abilities like Castlevania does. And perhaps it'll have some new gameplay ide- Okay, that's Sakaguchi we're talking about, to that guy innovative means another convoluted mess of a levelling system.

I just hope that they fix the god-awful buddy AI and take it easy on the menu system.  The system in Sword of Mana had so many sub-menus that it got frustrating having to go through so many menus just to equip/check something.

Sword of Mana in a word is frustrating. The most inaccurate fight system ever!

I enjoyed Sword of Mana.  Although, leveling up every single weapon for every single character got really old really quickly.

Whoops. I mean Secret of Mana! Sword of Mana (the remake) is decent. Less awkward. I was really amazed at how overrated the SNES game was.

Goddamn it.  You made me screw up, too.  I also meant Secret of Mana.

Secret of Mana was the good one!

I didn't say it wasn't good.  I just said I was pissed that I had to level up my axe, my spear, my whip, etc for all three characters.  It got old.

Seiken Densetsu 3 was awesome too.  Played through it about 3 times solo, and one file with multiplayer the enitire game (awesome roommate).

COOL NINJA JUTSU'S

"COOL NINJA JUTSU'S"

Preach on Pro! SD3 is the definitive Mana Game.  I don't know how many times I've mentioned this, but its one of the best RPG's never to [legally] make it stateside. I can't sing its praises enough. Why Square(enix) hasn't bothered to ship it stateside is beyond me. This could make for an interesting filler title while we're waiting for Children of Mana...

Are we going to make another thread?

Yeah, that's true. I should've mentioned that. SD3 is quite good, and if Children of Mana follows the design (which I guess it would?) then it'll be fine.

New Children of Mana scans.

These ones look a lot better than the last ones.  I especially like the village at the bottom of the first scan.  There's also a lot more really nice cut scene artwork.

All in all, these new scans have turned in into a believer.

I loved Secret of Mana...I saved leveling up all my weapons for all my characters when I had beaten the game.
