Title: Gamers Unite for Hurricane Relief
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on September 06, 2005, 02:58:14 AM
Spread the word, get involved.

In the wake of devastation caused in the Southeastern U.S. by Hurricane Katrina, GamersRelief.com is a website created by Advanced Media Networks to spread the word and promote action among the online gaming community.  We highly encourage our readers to visit the site, spread the word, and most importantly, get involved.

Currently, Gamers Relief is accepting PayPal donations which will be delivered weekly to the Red Cross.  However, PGC recommends that you make a direct online contribution to the Red Cross so that the money will be delivered sooner to the people who need it.  We also highly recommend that our readers who live in the U.S. and are eligible to donate blood do so as soon as possible.  The Red Cross website can help you find a nearby blood donation center.

In other news, Rockstar Games have announced they will release a game called "New Orleans: Looter". It's just like GTA but with rising floods! INNOVATION!

BTW, Paypal for Red Cross donations is a bad idea. Did anyone not hear about the Something Awful debacle?

Yep, they had the whole account frozen, which was a real shame as they had accumlated thousands of dollars for the cause very quickly. Seems the situation isn't going to improve either... a shame.

Can someone fill me in on why Something Awful's hurricane relief PayPal account was shut down?

The fellow explains it in great detail on the site.  Apparently Paypal thought that much money in so little time ($30,000 in nine hours) was suspicious, so they froze the account.  Once that happened there were tons of "legal" barriers and regulations to overcome, which basically fell through for various reasons.  After the donation refunds are sent back he's going to start up another fund, not using paypal.

here the link to The Paypal Fiasco: In Summary

"This is comparable to shooting the morbidly obese 900-pound fat guy taking up space in a nuclear fallout shelter so 20 other people can fit into the area he was consuming. "

Stevey, that quote refers to the webserver, not the Paypal fiasco.

Donating blood is also often good for free food
