Title: Battalion Wars: Looks like a riot!
Post by: Pale on August 31, 2005, 10:52:43 AM
Hmm I didn't see a thread for this here.
Anyway, at the Nintendo booth at PAX, this was definately the biggest surprise for me. It went from being a game that looked kind of cool, to a game that I will be buying right away.
It has an arcade flavor and incredibly inspired animations. I was super impressed by how they nailed both the singular arcade feel of controlling one guy and the advance wars turn-based strategy feel of controlling an entire platoon.
The best part was when I trudged my little guys right up to a bunch of ammo crates..... and shot one.
They all keeled over and died. I lauged. =P
But anyway, I wouldn't miss this game if I were you. I can already see the reviews trashing its childish graphics... but I thought they were awesome.

Anyone who bashes this game for its graphics, art, or style doesn't derserve to play the game. Batallion Wars looks awesome, and now that Zelda has been delayed it's likely to get a lot more love. I know I wasn't looking forward to iot as much as I am now, and that's a shame. It looks fantastic.

I think the game will have trouble gaining acceptance because of the Advance Wars association. Fans didn't react well to a real time strategy game not made by Intelligent Systems being called Advance Wars. It looked like Nintendo was just throwing the franchise name on an unrelated game to spur sales similar to Star Fox Adventures. They've smartened up since then as the new suggests more of spin-off series but the original name has turned a few people off. I know I've never been too hot on it because I felt it was a lame Advance Wars in name only. They're going to face some bias from reviewers because of that so they better really pull off something special to overcome that.

In other words, Ninty can't win...Not like that's anything new...

Bill it's not like I said that changing the name was a bad idea. It's just the damage has already been done.

Well I wasn't directing my comment at you, but at the gaming industry in general...Everyone can't be happy at the same time...

I'm getting this game. I don't care if the name was changed because the gameplay is still the same. I saw some footage and it seems like alot of fun. If reviewers point out the name change then I guess they should quit their job/hobby right now before they even write it. Well who am I kidding...

I think the game is coming along pretty nicely, i originally played it at E3 2004. It was a complete surprise back then, but the game was very under polished and the controls and camera was sorta hard to get used to.
However when I played this game at E3 2005, I realized this would be a purchase for me. I remember posting this next statement before on PGC forums but here goes anyway.........The game is like a mix of Battlefield 1942, and (insert RTS game here).
I'd like to change that statement however, its more like Battlefield 1942 and Pikmin. Calling your troops and commanding them makes me really feel like im playing Pikmin Wars, lol.
It's really really fun! LOL, now im picturing pikmin guys with rambo get ups and an M4A1 Assault Rifle!!!!!!!!!
By the way the game seems to be getting some polish to the game since the last time i played it. THe sound effects are very VERY nice from bullets to voicework, and the CG movies aren't that bad either, nothing spectacular but its a plus.

This game looks interesting. Is it an rts or what?

It's hard to describe... You control one little guy... and have the ability to tell others what to do...
So it's kind of both RTS and Action... at least from what I've seen.
By that I mean, you are telling other characters what to do, but you also hold down A to shoot your machine gun, etc.

IGN has some good videos, they show pretty much how you will be playing. I'm specially awaiting to play with the flying vehicles. The game looked very fluid and that's a plus IMO. I just hope giving orders isn't that hard or at least not painstakingly annoying.

well Nintendo Power explains it a bit more, you can use the c-stick to easily control the rest of your army. Last time i played it all i could do was call my army and direct them where to go with the c-stick.

Have you played Pikmin? Have you played Advance Wars? How'd you like them?
That's right, Battalion Wars will rule

I have been keeping an eye on this one lately. It just looks like fun. There are enough sims out there, and its good to see something a bit differant. I like Ogre Battle 64 because it was very rewarding when you setup a good strategy, and this game looks to do the same. Your gonna have to think, not just go out and start shooting. Looking forward to this game more than any other thats coming out this fall.

Yeh, after reading the intial E3 2004 impressions I wasn't convinced. However, I've been pleasantly surprised by the praise it's getting from IGN at the moment. It does look as though it could indeed become a nice little sleeper hit!

It looks like a Nintendo-ified Battlefield game.
What could go wrong?

BTW IGN reviewed this game and gave it a 8.8 and apparently they were impressed with the AI of your allies and the strategy aspect(trying to keep your units alive and micromanagment) and how it represents a realistic war area and the voice acting. But knocked it for not having a customizable enemy AI difficulty and the game being 30 FPS. They also expect it to be a sleeper hit and didn't really mind the lack of multiplayer.

If that means it'll be in the Amazing Deals! thread within a month of release, I can accept the total lack of multiplayer.

I just bought the game and I put in about an hour and a half. I've completed the first three missions and right now I'm still getting to know the control scheme. The learning curve for controlling this game is not bad. The first couple of levels are basically tutorials. I haven't gotten Pikmin comfortable, but I'm getting there. I'm looking forward to going home tonight to play it.

Picked this game up yesterday, and have put a few hours into it. Some impressions...
After the obligatory "become comfortable with the controls" phase, I can honestly say that it is in fact a riot. Micro-managing can be awfully satisfying at times (like targeting my Missile vets on a pesky gun ship and watching it go down in flames a second later), or stationing two heavy tanks at choke points at opposite ends of the battle field, and switching back and forth to wreak havoc in multiple places at once. Four hours in, and the controls have become all but transparent. It's fun just driving (the vehicles' controls are reminiscent of those in Halo) or flying around; you could almost forget there's fighting to do.
It's also interesting, while your allies' AI is respectable, how much of a difference you as the player make on the battlefield with seemingly small or insignificant choices. Your choice of unit (light tank or gunship?), your choice of where to tell your troops to guard, whether you take all your troops at once or form an expeditionary force, etc. all have VERY significant effects on how your troops will have held up at the end of the day. It was sometimes surprising how quickly I could lose a mission if I wasn't careful about my planning. Luckily, any frustration this caused was greatly overshadowed by the "Ahh, if I do it THIS way, I should fare better - ok I'll try again!" feeling.
Besides the challenging/addicting gameplay, I'm finding myself further drawn in by the parallels this game runs to the Advance Wars games - the presence/mood brought by the COs, end-of-mission rankings, and especially the unit checks/balances. This game very much belongs in the "Wars" family, even if it's a (slightly) different genre. The number of similarities surprised me because some reviews have downplayed, or at least not elaborated much on, this relation. But it makes the game feel cozy and familiar, even if the gameplay is different - pretty cool, since I loved the GBA entries in the series.
Thus far, I'm decidedly impressed - no lingering regrets about the $50 price of admission here.

I picked this game up today. I played about 3 missions so far. It definately gets tougher, but its definately strategic. When I lose, its because of the bad decisions, and ifis very rewarding when you make the right decisions. I hope this one doesnt bomb in sales, cause I would bet a Rev version of this game would be sweet, online mode anyone?

just picturing everyone fighting to have control of the vehicles, lol. I think one of the smaller but neat aspects is that each type of unit whether it be soldier or vehicle they all play in their own unique way. Currenlty i love the flame throwers and the Heavy Recon, i can't wait to get some free time to play it, D@mn u life why must u get in the way of everything.......wishes for a pause button for life.................................

I've had the game for about 2 weeks now and average about an hour a day after work with it. It definitely is a real gem of a game. I can't remember the last time I wanted to get really in-depth about a very big landscape in 3D. You see this sort of thing all the time with Advance Wars on the GBA and the DS. However, I haven't since the original Goldeneye when I would try to memorize everything going on in a level. Batallion Wars sometimes make you study...and sometimes you may just go overboard with the studying and realize that all you had to do was round up everyone and kick some ass.
Knock out all your anti-air threats...and bomb the S#!t out of the enemy.
The game is definitely a hybrid of Pikmin and Advance Wars...

I enjoy this game alot... but it's hard as hell in my opinion. The first 3 missions are pretty simple but then the difficulty suddenly ramps up significantly. It can be rather aggrivating, but when you do finally succeed it's a great feeling.

Yeah I pretty much agree here.
Man that Sand Dunes mission really pissed me off. The one where you guard the fortress and they bail form copters on the beachead. 20 tries later and I finally passed it.
I finally just sat next to the capture pt with my assault guys and killed the enemy soldiers without using targeting. This technique kept them from lowering the flag. Targeting was just next to impossible when the enemy was at the capture pt because it would always target the capture pt.
The game sorta plays itself you know. The whole put your guys in cover and move your arty to strategic pts is a bit lost on me. IT's hard to give orders. And it's hard to tell if cover is helping your guys or not.
You never quite get the sense you really have anything under control or that you really know what you are doing.
The game is pretty polished tho. Frame rate is smooth.
I think the key is just hit start alot and look at the overhead map and use that interface to switch to what troops you want and to get a heads up on where to move your troops.

I loved the beach head mission. Did you use the bunkers strewn over the beach? I just placed my dudes in those and then left my assault troops in the fort to mop any enemies attempting to raise their evil flag. It was awesome placing the artillery units up on the hills and watching them rain destruction! Ka POW!
Title: RE:Battalion Wars: Looks like a riot!
Post by: trip1eX on October 10, 2005, 04:11:55 PM
Yeah I filled up a couple of those bunkers. Not sure about arty placement. I fianlly finished it when I left my assault guys back by the capture pt and mopped up guys that made it to the flag like you said. I also stopped targeting guys cause the capture pt would get in the way and make it impossible to get a target.
I don't know had a problem on that mission. The next couple have been fairly easy with at most a couple of retries mostly cause I'm too slow as I look to heal my guys and group 'em together.

Yeah time is my biggest problem as well. I don't rush in I prefer to probe and send a recon or whatever up ahead. Sometimes I get caught out on the time factor especially when you have to defend X or kill Y before it crosses bridge F. Love the game. Would love a combat mode with limited troops v limited troops on a small battlefield even if it was single player.

Spent some more time with it lately (more like just one night).
Got S-rankings in the entire first campaign, minus the bonus mission.

Almost like General Chaos for the Sega Genesis... where you could pick a set of commandos for a mission over a whole squad.
