Title: Some of your advertisers...
Post by: KDR_11k on July 17, 2005, 10:07:19 AM
I just had a popup when visiting PGC. The thing is, I've set Opera to "requested popups only". There is some way of circumventing that and apparently one of your advertisers uses it. Some casino, didn't wait for the ad to load. Usually you only see that hack used on warez sites and comparably shady stuff. I dunno what you should do, probably nothing. Just wanted to let the world know that I hate that scum that tries to circumvent my ad blockers (seriously, do they think I'm blocking popups because I'm going to use their shady online gambling the moment their ad breaks into my system? Isn't it more likely that I'm not a potential victim for whatever scam operation they're running because I clearly decided to remove that annoying crap? Or more exactly, that circumventing a protection mechanism scares me away?). That's the no-ethics type that would also resort to spam and spyware. F#cking bastards should be executed by the wheel.

It's a command now in some Flash ads.  It's retarded.  Firefox has blocks for them too, but it is an update that needs to be done manually.  I agree though.  Ads that circumvent preventive methods usually give me _less_ reason to check them out.  I don't think PGC should stop doing what they need to to stay free, but I do need to vent against this.

Heh... I love Google's AdWords advertising... right now, reading this post, there's five ads for downloading Pop-up blockers.

Just wait until the Pop-up blockers start using pop-ups to advertise!

While we're on the topic, anyone know a good Google ad filter for Proxomitron?

Hm... From a comment in the source code: "RedSheriff Customer Intelligence V4". In other words, there's some bastards spying on us right now.

Set *.googlesyndication.com to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file, that should kill Google ads. Better kill *.imrworldwide.com, too, that seems to be a tracker that scans PGC (it might be blocked already). Personally I have set my cookies to opt-in, i.e. block any site I don't explicitly add to my list. That kills the evil Google cookie.

"That kills the evil Google cookie. "

Google and evil should NEVER be use in the same post! and what pop up ad I go to pgc and never get pop up (unless it E3) when they need money and half of the time the banner ad don't work and I use 0 blockers.

You're deliberately ignoring or forging facts in order to make people disagree. What's wrong with you, not enough flame wars on this board?

Google is plain out evil. They're running a HUGE data mining operation. Everything you do that Google can know of is logged. Even if Google doesn't use that information, what if gov agents subpoena them? That data is valuable for identifying unpatriotic tendencies and deciding whom to ship to Auschwitz^WGuantanamo Bay.

Alright KDR, since you've now ruined Google for me, what search engine would you recommend?

There isn't anything wrong with google.  You can have conspiracy theories about anything on the internet, but google is a great company.  You hear nothing but good things from employees.  Their service is outstanding.  They constantly come out with new fun things.

KDR might as well have a problem with every big successful business if he has a problem with Google.  Google rocks...  that's all that really needs to be said.

Ah, so it is. I just dropped that into my current URL killfile. ("[^.]+.googlesyndication.com/")

There isn't anything wrong with Hitler. You can have conspiracy theories about any head of state, but Hitler is a great leader. You hear nothing but good things from SS soldiers. Their military efficiency is outstanding. They constantly come out with fun, new things--like V2s and factory-line killing processes.

May Godwin strike me down.

Whatever guys... =P  Where do you work?

Edit: As I re-read the thread I realize that Renny was most likely kidding, but my question still stands I guess...

Yeah yeah, we've all seen the closeup by now...

Pale: Read up on what Google does with its tracking cookie. There's no SINGLE reason for it to exist as it does. Google is one giant datamining operation.

vudu: Just delete your Google cookie and block any future cookies from them, that way they can't track you as effectively.

I know they data mine.  The thing is... it doesn't bother me.  I've never been one to be bothered by statistics...  In fact it's quite the opposite.  They intrigue me.  If what sites my IP has gone to is lost in some massive database at google, I don't really care.

This is why they data mine Google Personalized Search

Personalized Search is an improvement to Google search that orders your search results based on what you've searched for before. Learning from your history of searches and search results you've clicked on, Personalized Search brings certain results closer to the top when it's clear they're most relevant to you.
Part of Personalized Search is the Search History feature, which lets you view and manage your history of past searches and the search results you've clicked on. As you build up your search history, your personalized search results will continue to improve over time.

I come from a country where that kind of monitoring and datasharing is completely illegal. I like my civil rights.

Well, dirt doesn't have it that bad. People tend to satay out of it. But when it rains you get to make all the little misbehaved children happy. Then there's always the hope that you'll become soil and give birth to much plant life.

Think of Google like Superman...they have this awesome power, and if they wanted, they could do great evil with it...

But, they don't.  They use their powers for the forces of Good.

They're a corporation, if making a profit requires evil things they're required to do it. That's what the whole stock market thing is about, you have the obligation towards your shareholders to make as much profit as possible.
