Hockey negotiations have been going well, there should be a season next year. I'm pretty sure they'd have made an announcement about it if it was exclusive. Then again, maybe they're tired of everyone blowing up each time they announce something like that! Also, exclusive liscence might mean nobody else is allowed to make a game from that one particular liscence...they have to buy their own "exclusive" liscence. I'm no lawyer, I'm just taking stabs in the dark.

Perhaps they'll announce the exclusivity when they feel like there's a need for it. Or they just don't announce it and make everyone believe everybody else stopped making NHL games because they are afraid of EA or something.
What will they so next, get exclusive licenses with the US Army?

Stevey, hockey isn't dead. The AHL, a national league with ties to the NHL, actually has been thriving over the past couple of years. My guess is because of the low ticket prices. I would personally love to see a game based on the AHL

Nooooo
Hockey WILL be back next season - the negotiations are looknig like they'll end in the first week of July. Damn, this is bad news. I played the 2K series and I knot that they are better, but I had to settle with the EA games as I needed one on the Cube and the 2K series wasn't there. Still, I always had hope that someday I would own a better hockey game. Now, the quality of the EA games are going to get even worse.

Looks like someon at EA goofed. Now, whether that means they said the wrong thing, or let the cat slip out of the bag too early remains to be seen.

I find it quite stupid how whenever these exclusive deals go down some people are all "oh man, now I have to buy EA's crappy game." WRONG. You don't have to buy sh!t. If EA makes a crappy game don't buy it and if enough people do that it will encourage them to improve things. You don't NEED to play annual updates to sports games. Don't be such a whore for the major sports leagues. Updated rosters and a league licence are required to have a good NHL videogame but are not required for a good HOCKEY game. There's a difference.

You don't have to buy sh!tDammit Ian, I don't NEED to but I WANT to. Don't you get it? I want a good hockey game to play. I don't buy it annually - I bought NHL 2004 and that's it. RE buying other hockey games: When EA got the NFL deal, I remember reading that only one or two other devs were going to make football games without the license, and one of them was as concerned with making a game to do with life outside of football i.e fame, drugs etc. Not having the license gives them such little incentive to make sports games - no one will buy games if they don't have their favourite teams etc to play with. I would most definitely buy a HOCKEY game of better quality even if it doesn't have the license, but not many others would. Developers won't use so many resources to make a game that won't sell - even if they DO make a hockey game or w/e it will be a low budget game because they figure it won't sell, and they are quite right.
So yea, I want to buy a good hockey game. If EA gets exclusive rights, other games won't sell, they just won't, because they don't have a license. Devs won't have incentives to make new hockey game even if it is better, because they know that it won't sell. Therefore they will not make one at all or make a low budget one. This, in turn, makes my choice the EA game, because I still want a hockey game. Besides, many of the other hockey games, if made, won't be on a Nintendo console, so there.

I'll be selfish and play this angle from my point of view, most likely pissing off anyone who likes sports games, so sorry in advance.
Personally, I have never bought a realistic sports game with the exception of International Super Star Soccer for the N64, as I enjoyed the “create a team” aspect at the time. EA, if this is true, continuing to snatch Sports licensees is disheartening, but actually beneficial to me in the end. Let’s face it, when it comes to sports games, there is really no insurance they are going to hit the cube; in fact, if they aren’t made by EA they rarely do now a days. If you are a multi-console owner who loves sports, then this is horrible news, but for a single console owner who doesn’t, these actions look like hits at the Xbox and PS2 library of games more than anything else.

Turned out to be a misprint, BTW. From what I heard the NHL decided it didn't want to hand out an exclusive license anyway.

I don't blame the NHL for this. Unlike the NFL, they don't have the luxury of a national media contract that all but guarentees profitability for every franchise in the league, they need all the revenue sharing they can get.
Moreover, the 2K series shot itself in the foot last year. After designing a game that was, from a gameplay perspective, vastly superior to the EA alternative, they left the game so insultingly unpolished and bug-ridden that I doubt anyone would make the mistake of buying it again next year anyhow.

The NFL went exclusive because EA paid more for the exclusivity than all competitors combined.

Right, but the NFL isn't hard-up for cash in the first place, and forcing exclusivity in video games (especially when there are other products with strong brand loyalty) could risk damaging the value of the brand.
The NHL's brand is about as damaged as its going to get, and buggy games like NHL 2k5 certainly aren't improving that.

...excuse this post as it may be interpreted as a compliment to EA...but I'm all for the exclusive NFL license as Madden's the best NFL video game choice anyway...
And I know nothing about hockey so I'm not going to comment on that.

Madden NFL's best video game ROTFLMMAO. Madden!? Are you nuts. Its the same regurgitated crap year in and year out and now thanks to the NFL Its the only option I have. Ah well at least I still have ESPN NFL 2K5. Madden only improved when a new competitor came along and handed EA its ass. It happened with Gameday on PS1. It happened with NFL2k on Dreamcast, and NFL 2K5 had a level of presentation never seen before. Madden can't even get the commentary down and the gameplay is as flawed as always.

It doesn't matter if Madden is the best. Even if there was competition, there would sitll be Madden, so you would still get what you felt was the best, while other people could buy what they felt was the best. It was win-win.
Plus, now EA could price Madden $10 higher than it is now (which was $30 more than Sega's anyway) which either means you shell out another ten for your precious updated rosters, or you could skip it. It's lose-lose.
