Title: PSP UMD Sales
Post by: thepoga on June 22, 2005, 02:43:04 PM
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/22/news_6128001.html

Only 100,000 have been sold. I don't know why Sony feels like saying that's a lot because for the amount of different movies they have available, it's very little. From the 3 companies who pledged their support, (minus Sony's own movies, just to be safe) let's say 33,000 movies have been sold each. That's $660,000 per company. It seems that they're praising the 100,000 "mile-stone" like the half a million milestone of Resident Evil 4.

And to theorize...

I'd say Resident Evil and House of Flying Daggers would be the top sellers, perhaps because Resident Evil is the one most likely to be confused with a game from that series, and House of Flying Daggers is the one the least people would know its being a movie and would mistake it for a game.

I would imagine sales of the UMD version of "Are We There Yet?" To be quite low.

Well, since the PSP is still pretty new AND the only thing playing those 100k umd movies that's fairly significant but not anyting to brag about.

Given all Sony is putting behind the PSP and UMD thats pathetic. The PSP launched with a nice lineup and nothing has come out since. While the DS lineup is picking up, the PSP lineup seems to be dwindling fast. The PSP software lull reminds me of the N64 lull. After the Mario 64 there was a huge lull. The DS has gotten   by amazingly well on a sparse lineup. Kinda of like the PS2, it got by on PS1 games. The DS is getting by on GBA games with top notch games around the corner. If the Sony couldn't topple the DS at its weakest point....they are going to be screwed this fall.

conflicting information from May 22, 2005

Quote

Two UMD movies have now sold more than 100,000 copies each: Sony's House of Flying Daggers and Resident Evil 2, both released April 19. Sony's Feingold calls the sales tally "remarkable," noting that it took nine months for the first DVD title, Air Force One, to cross the 100,000-unit mark.
source:USA Today

looks like some one has got their facts mixed up.  Why would they report 100,000 sold now if it had been accomplished individually by two seperate titles a month ago and in the span of a months time?

Unless they just hit 100,000 in Japan only

Perhaps USA Today's numbers are quantity shipped, not sold.  I haven't seen seen those number anywhere else.

USA toda must be the confused ones. Besides we all know how the "real" media messes up the facts of our world.

I heard that supposedly Sony released the specs on UMD (for movies) and made it an "open system". Sony isn't charging any royalties on UMD movies.

That's why so many titles that aren't coming from Sony Pictures are popping up now. And it's why Sony claims to be "upset" about porn being made on UMD video, but says that they can't do anything to stop it.

Anyone with a factory can start running off UMDs now.

Even though Sony says this only applies to movies, you just know that this would be a massive blunder in terms of securing the PSP against game piracy. That is, if anyone was actually interested in bothering to put bootlegs on UMD discs anymore (the Memory Stick is clearly where it's at).

But I thought no was able to burn UMD but Sony, making that PORN on UMD thing more of a PR moment than anything.....

If that is the case, they have to be making the UMD, and therefore making money off of the UMD.

edited to actually make sense

I have a feeling Sony still makes the UMDs for the porn, they just complain to keep their "family friendly image", something they are very dear about.

Sony refused to publish God of War in Europe because some ratings bodies decided not to rate the game (i.e. it's worse than an 18 rated game), stating they value their family friendly image too much to publish an unrated game. Of course that's SCEE, a bunch of wankers that are even worse than NoE.

Well it does make sense when you think about it.
How many teen-aged boys do you think will have some porn at least on their memorysticks?
An odd demographic but a demographic indeed.

Porn on the go is idiotic and I believe it can get you arrested.

Not in Japan. Besides, some people use the toilets at work for that.

A few senators would be furious about these things hell senator Schmumer from NY has banned the PS2 ,Xbox and PC game called "25 to life" in every NYC store because it degrades the immage of police officers he also decribed the game as the movie "Romper Room" meets GTA. If you dont know what 25 to life is, its a SOCOM type of game but its police officers versus gansters in a urban area full of crime. And I bet they will be POed at pron UMDS.

No, he sent a letter to these stores asking them not to stock it. He is not allowed to ban stores from stocking it. The supreme court has struck down enough videogame bans to make it clear that banning videogames is comparable to banning books, against the right to free speech.
