Title: The Rev's front flap...
Post by: Don'tHate742 on May 31, 2005, 02:47:53 PM
Could anyone tell me what's housed there?

I remembering reading some hands-on previews, and someone stated that the flap is a hint in itself and further said "that's the revolution right there."

I wish I could find a link, but maybe you guys know what i'm talking about.

It contains four Gamecube controller ports, as well as 2 GCN memory card outlets for complete backwards compatibility

EDIT: That flap

Actually, the GC ports are on top (side, whatever) of the system, while that front flap remains a mystery.  Seems like the logical place for the SD card slots, though, unless it just comes with an adapter to use with the GC slot.

I have no idea what you're talking about, what with the flap being the revolutionary feature.  I doubt it, but it's still a possibilty.

maybe it creates real-time holographic projections, like R2-D2 does or something.

IGNcube: "a flap on the front of the machine hides the slots for the 512MB memory cards that Revolution utilizes for downloads and game saves."

Wasn't it stated somewhere that the Rev also has 2 USB ports?  could those also be under the flap? what about the DVD playback peripheral that is supposed to inserted into the console(similar to the N64 ram pack)?

speaking on all that, has anyone seen a pic of the back of the console?

I'm not 100% confident in IGN's information on "the flap".  It seems too big just for memory cards.   For now, I'll stick with my theory that it's a slot for the DVD attachment, including a standard DVD-player LCD.

I hope that it's a plug where I can put my Easy Bake oven!

If we could we might be able to tell if it has a normal fan for cooling or one of these rumored things with the liquid metal or what not...that'd be cool.  Someone should ask one of the guys at IGN that got to handle one.

I hope it is a harddrive.  They can hook the DVD attackment in the controller or memory card port.

I don't want to have to buy 3 sd cards over the next five years.

Nintendo said that you would have to buy another accessory that plugs into the revolution somehow to play dvds, does that mean its possible for Nintendo to make another accessory that can play HD-Dvd or blu-ray discs?

They'd have to replace the optical drive entirely to play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, so upgrading that won't be possible.

Black: IGNcube says the USB ports are on the back

Recievers for the wireless controllers seems to be the most probable idea.

Well considering we dont know anything about the dvd add-on device or the revolutions optical drive, you cant make that assumption.  Until we have some more solid specs anything is still possible.  We dont even know how the DVD add-on device connects to the revolution.

We do know that the add-on will be housed within the console(don't feel like lookin for the quote).

now for a little thinking outloud...................

What if Nintendo went with a blue laser drive that is capable of reading red laser disc.  This 'DVD add-on' would be purchased depending on what format of movies you want to watch.  One adapter for regular DVD's, one for HD-DVD, and one for BRD. HD & BRD would both be able to watch regular DVD also but would be more expensive.

i.e. 19.99 for regular DVD alone, for those that don't have HDtv's therefore not needing BRD or HD movies.
and 39.99 for HD-DVD or BRD, 59.99 for a combination of both, this would cover all HD/BRD/DVD consortium fees and give the user options with the ability to upgrade or switch movie formats at will.

Talon: You're right. I was assuming that the Rev had a standard red-laser media drive. FWIW, Nintendo's comments seem to suggest that it does. But who knows. Anything can still happen.

Was this an actual rumor, that the DVD drive would be upgradable, cause I had just thought of it when I posted it.  But I bring this up cause now it was mentioned in the mailbag @ IGNCube today, and I hadn't heard that as an actual rumor before.

Mystery Slot

Matt what does the little flap on the front of the revolution do? I saw on a website that you can upgrade the dvd drive in it. Have you heard that?

Matt responds: Nope. According to Nintendo of America, the front flap houses the slots for the 512MB-plus flash cards that Revolution will use to store game downloads and other data. I haven't heard anything about upgrade drives.

I saw the rumor that the drive will allegedly be upgradeable to support HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but nothing I've heard or seen suggests that's true. I think it's merely wishful thinking.

Have you guys heard this before?

"now for a little thinking outloud..................."

ok Look at a pic of the rev ... thinking ... thinking ... *ding* I got *bang head in motor* owe what was it ... oh yeah the blue light on the rev must mean the rev has a Blue-laser of a fomate that nintendo made.

Actually the color of the light has absolutely nothing to do with the color of the laser.

Even if the Rev had a red or green glowing slot, that doesn't mean that their drive uses a red or green laser, but it could be a crypitic hint as to the optical format(which would be great).

In the latest Mailbag on IGN, Matt said it was for SD cards.  Boring!
