Title: So, list of Games you'd download?
Post by: Strell on May 17, 2005, 04:16:01 PM
Off the top of my head...I'll try to keep these by system but I doubt I'll succeed.  I'm at work so my attention is divided.

Excitebike
Castlevania 1/2/3/4/X
Contra
Contra III: Alien Wars
Goldeneye 64
Sin and Punishment
Tetrisphere (never got a chance to play it)
Blast Corps
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 4/6 (maybe even 3/5???)
Secret of Mana
Secret of Mana 2 (i.e. Seiken Densetsu 3...maybe there's a way to patch Japanese games???)
Mario Paint  (Usb ports...mouse and keyboard?)
Earthbound 1/2 (i.e. Mother 1/2....hmm...maybe they'll finish Earthbound 64??)
Mario All Stars
Kid Icarus

Dammit now I have more questions than when I began...and I'll edit this with more later.

A lot depends on price. If they keep the price reasonable (Say, $0.25 per NES ROM, $1 per SNES ROM, and $5 per N64 ROM, I'd probably get quite a few.

Also important is which third parties they can get to re-release their stuff. That is, unless the license third parties had to sign is still good for letting Nintendo distribute the games.

I'd like to add that it looks like the original Playstation's use of CD's is finally a disadvantage for Sony - Sony can't offer anything like this at anywhere near the convenience no matter how much they like to brag about the number of games the PS3 could play.

That's a good list, and I really don't want to repeat anything.  But I would add:

Pilotwings 64
Perfect Dark

And probably a few more..

Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
Zelda: LttP
Super Metroid

Probably more that I can't think of at this moment. (If they're reasonably priced- a lot more)

Yeah it depends on price.  Also can I archive them?

anyhoo I think Nintendo's back catalog might be great for kids.  The games have generally easier controls.  The difficulty of the games tho might be too great.

If it's just Nintendo first party stuff nothing.  I own every Nintendo published game I want to own so there's no point.

If third parties were included I would probably get some obscure SNES titles I can't find used like Chrono Trigger and R-Type III.  My Earthbound's save battery is f*cked so I probably would get that too.

One thing that would be cool is if they used this to localize some originally Japan-only titles.  If they used this to localize stuff like the SNES Fire Emblem games I would pick them up in a second provided they were priced right.

The price is the big factor.  If Nintendo goes all NES Classis Series on us and charges $20 for games or something the whole thing will completely bomb.  It depends how good the emulation is too.  And if they CHANGE anything like adding crappy voices or something I won't download anything.

I've heard this comment a lot lately so I'm going to see if I can make sense of it.

"Yea well will it include third parties?"

1. Iwata (or whoever) said it would be ALL past library games.

2. Downloading these games is going to almost be 100% profit for whatever company.  Aside from server costs, I can't think of much else.  Let's assume Nintendo DOES have all the third parties.  Let's assume someone wants to download Chrono Trigger.  Let's say it's 10 bucks.  I'd assume 2 might go to costs.  The remaining 8 - maybe 3 goes to Nintendo, 5 goes to Square Enix.  Point being is that it's basically pure profit to both companies AGAIN.  So what would be the point of *not* allowing someone to download these games?

I guess at this point I just can't see a third party not wanting their games to be downloaded UNLESS, UNLESS Nintendo did something stupid and said "we want 90% of the profit for every game you download."  At that point, yea, third parties might as well tell them to piss off.

I guess we'll know in a few months though....

Actually as I was writing that, I wondered the same thing.

Irem
Data East
Ultra (though that's really just Konami in disguise...)

Who else isn't around anymore?

EVERY GAME THAT HAS EVER BEEN RELEASED ON ANY SYSTEM SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD. It doesn't matter if who has the rights now, Nintendo owns those games. If you go to a Toys R' Us right now, look in the bargin bin and find Perfect Dark, will the clerk say, "Mircosoft owns this now franchise which means we can't sell it to you".  Think iTunes but for games. Only games that won't be availible are the ones by that company who made NES Games without permission e.i. those funny shaped NES games. Fear not, the glory days are returning.

I don't know if this was said but will you be able to send the downloaded rom to the Ds to we can play on the go? Oh please, oh lease let that be true. If so, then the Ds could be the iPod of we all wanted, sorta...

NinjaGaiden Trilogy
EVERY R-Type and Contra
BlasterMatster
TMNT4 Turtles in Time.
StarFox
StarFox64
Clash at Demon Head
Stryder
3D worldrunner
Rad Racer
Yoshi's Island
F-zero all of them
007-373-5963...(you know what that is)
too many games to name

I wonder if there'll be any portable games emulated.

As for myself, first 2 games I'm getting are Super Metroid and Link to the Past. Just for the hell of it.

That would kick ass.  I've never played Chrono Trigger and haven't been able to find it used.

Super Dodgeball (NES)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
King of the Monsters 2 (SNES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4 (SNES)
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters (SNES)
Killer Instinct Gold (N64)
Goldeneye (N64)
Perfect Dark (N64)
Super Smash Bros (N64) [sorry I sold this one, would like to dig it out now just for the good memories]

If I could get a list together like that, it would be awesome. Yes I own just about all of these, save Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters and SSB which I sold, but having them all on one system without having to dig out the actual games would be very nice.

Of course, honestly, those are just the ones I would love to have, I would likely go insane with this thing and try to get tons more.

I hope Nintendo is smart enough to realize that they can't charge as much for an NES game as they can for an N64 game. If we look at Apple's 99 cents for a 4-5 MB download we get a pretty good idea of what it costs per MB to deliver content. NES games are WAY smaller than this, the cost would be almost nothing. I'd guess at the kind of volume they're likely to be doing its way way less than a penny a download in cost for your average NES ROM.

So what should they charge? Think of it this way: if they charge $5 each for NES ROMs, I'm going to buy only two or three of them. If its a buck, I have maybe 10-15 of them I'd probably get. If its a quarter, I'd probably buy hundreds. Since the cost per unit is practically nothing, they'll make a lot more money off of me at a quarter each.

I don't know if my likely spending habits are the same as other people here... so I don't know what's the "sweet spot" for them, but that pricing is a major issue, and it could be the difference between the backwards compatibility being a major selling point and a train wreck.

Here's what I'm picturing. Go into Circuit City, or Best Buy, or wherever, plop down $20 for a "Revolution Download Card" that has a scratch-off code you enter in (like a calling card). Then you can spend it however you want on content. Maybe they could even have pack-in cards that come with some of the new first party Revolution titles (or even other stuff like cereal or potato chips) in smaller denominations to get people to try out the service without paying for it. Maybe you could even win some credits playing online titles. $0.25 for an NES title, $0.99 for an SNES title, and $5 for an N64 title.

"Irem

R-Type Final came out a little while ago so I imagine Irem is still around.

What about licenced titles?  When Konami included the old TMNT arcade games as bonuses for some new TMNT game they had to change the music because they no longer had the rights to it.  I assume this would be a similar situation.  Capcom made several great Disney games on the NES but they might have the rights to re-release something like Duck Tales.  Of course most licenced games suck but there's Goldeneye and it would be nice to have that for download.  Maybe EA and Nintendo could work a deal out for that one.
Title: RE:So, list of Games you'd download?

That just gave me an idea...Nintendo could say "if you buy this game for the Revolution, you'll get a code to download the classic free". So, for example, you could download Super Metroid when you buy Metroid Prime for the Rev, or SMB64 if you buy SMBR

I just want two games - Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger. I used to have both, but somehow they got lost..

. Iwata (or whoever) said it would be ALL past library gamesNo...he said all past NINTENDO games
Title: RE: So, list of Games you'd download?

I'd get too many, presuming they're cheap, for me to count. I've sold four people on the Revolution today by this alone. Nintendo just need to make sure they don't screw it up.

I'd buy tons of SNES games, since I never owned one.  I already beat Super Metroid with an emulator, awesome game, but I'd probably download cuz I do want to pay for it.  And I could do it again, perhaps.
Really, though, this is incredibly news.  I'll definitely be getting a ton of games, especially for SNES and N64, which I never got to own before.

I'd download none.

I've owned every major nintendo console since my NES and have the best of all the games i've had.

Here's Iwata's quote:
"It is accurate to say that Nintendo Revolution is capable of playing virtually every Nintendo console game ever created."

Note two important distinctions - "Virtually" and "Nintendo".  That could mean separate third-party agreements, some which won't go through, unfortunately... but my top A-list game is likely not going to make the cut.  Poor, poor Duck Hunt.
Title: RE: So, list of Games you'd download?

Yeah, they HAVE to get those rights. They can't just say "you released it on our system so now your IP is ours", that's no better than throwing warez on a website.

I'd probably get a few cheap top NES games just to laugh at how bad games were back then while people still call them the best games ever.

Title: RE: So, list of Games you'd download?

For those fearing the price remember this.  Nintendo was charging 20 dollars for the NES classics, because they still had to package the game game and put it on a cartridge and send the games to stores and distributors.  It is expensive.

Now Nintendo can give you these games at a fraction of the cost.  They simply have you buy the SD card and download away.

I am going to have to have a 512SD card for NES/SNES games I want
and
I am going to have to have a 1GIG card for all the N64 games I will want to get.

Also, Nintendo will still have to get the rights to publish the games in this manner.  As it is, unless Nintendo PUBLISHED the games themselves they don't have rights to republish them.  Also liscensed games like Ninja Turtles, may not have the right to use the liscense anymore, so those games may be out of pocket as well.

As for getting 3rd parties onboard.  All Nintendo has to say is we will not charge your for the server and will give you 90-100% of the prophet.  I mean after all its not like the 3rd parties actually have to DO anything to release the games.

If playing The Revolution on-line is totally free of any charges, how in the world can they make money other than charging for DL content?
$0.99 or 15 for $9.99(NES)
$1.49 or 10 for $9.99(SNES)
$2.49 or  7  for $9.99(N64)

The pre-paid download card idea works nice as well.  They will make a killing off my cicrle of friends alone of N64 wrestling games and Mario Bros All-Stars. Since we're dreaming here, could they also do soundtracks as well. I need the music from the first contra really, really bad.

The only one that I want that hasn't already been said:  Bad Dudes (NES).  This way, I can frame my original copy.  The president has been kidnapped by ninjas.  Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?  Greatest storyline ever.

I'm a little sad that this means all my old collectable games would be practically worthless.  I always knew that if it came down to it, I could sell my copy of Chrono Trigger for sixty bucks.  No more.  Sadness.

to me, a 3 minute song isn't worth nearly as much as a game I can play for hours, regardless of megabytes.
I'd say $3-5 would be a good range for NES/SNES games. Maybe as low as $2.50 for especially short games. Maybe as high as $10 for games like ALTTP. $10-15 for N64 games. That's still dirt cheap compared to what you'd have to pay to buy them used or on gameboy.
Title: RE: So, list of Games you'd download?

Right, but a lot of us already own the games. i've got 70-80 NES carts. If they're a quarter a pop, I'd happily pay the $20 to be able to use them all on the Rev, since my NES consoles are all shot. OTOH, if they're $5 each, its much cheaper for me to buy a used top-loader off eBay than shell out $400. At $5 a pop, I might buy Dragon Warrior 3, and maybe Genghis Khan but that's probably it. By raising their prices they lower their revenue, at least in this case.

To make me happy, they either need a low price point or a "unlimited downloads" subscription model that doesn't cost a fortune ($5-$10 a month).

Yes it would be the third parties that would have to put their old games up for download, but in all reality it would be in their best interest.  The ability to make money off a game that they have made no money off of for say 15 years or more.  I expect to see a ton of third party games available.

And I too already own every Nintendo system, and many games for each, yet I would still download more games than I could possibly play probably.  The convenience of playing them all on one system.  Forget the clutter of having my N64, SNES, NES, and Gamecube all hooked up.  Just my revolution and and a couple SD cards full of old school gaming goodness.  Not to mention the fact all those old consoles, and carts,  will eventually bite the dust, more than likely before Revolution.  Plus the ability to get hard to find, and nie on impossible to find games makes me happy.  As a lover of old RPG's, some of the hardest, and most expensive, to find, the proposition is very enticing.

And what a way to fight illegal emulation.

My first download would be Metal Gear, even though I already own it.

I, too, expect to see a great number of third-party developers and publishers on this bandwagon.  But I also expect to see some crippling one missing.  For instance, Square-Enix may decide that re-releasing their games with new content themselves is more profittable. (a la FF Chronicles, say)

For example - look at Disney, the champions of re-releasing.  Every ten years "the vault opens" on a Disney Masterpiece, on a new medium or with extra features - and it's available for a while, then off market.  Repeat.  With a game library like Square-Enix's, why would they suddenly flood the online market with their own titles?  Release one or two at a time, as that way they don't compete with eachother.  Then take them offline.

It's crappy for gamers, good for business.

Oh, and R.B.I. Baseball II for the NES.

Interesting tidbits from Iwata. Apparently he's said:
a) Nintendo is in talks with third party developers to get their retro games.
b) Nintendo hasn't decided whether they want to charge users per game as they download, or sell prepaid cards in stores. (personally, I'd like both)
This from gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/20/news_6126195.html), who got it from a reuters story.

Well, Nintendo needs to find a balance. I think a quarter is just way too low for someone like me, who has never owned an news or an snes. My prices were probably too high for the many who already own a lot of these games.
And I know I really shouldn't be arguing for higher prices....but, c'mon, a quarter for super mario bros? a quarter for zelda?

I also never owned a snes, but I always played with my cousin's. What about the awesome idea Ive seen in other forums that Nintendo makes an agreement with Sega and let their consoles' games also be available for download? that could very well make the Rev incstantly the best console ever.

Ill most likely get all the classics, since my old family is long gone because I gave it away to another cousin as a gift when I got my N64 I cant regret it anymore, trust me

There's probably no good reason not to license Genesis content if they can. Anything after that is probably too big to reasonably download since Sega was such an early adopter of the CD. Unfortunately that affords us damned little in good new content since most of the good Genesis titles wound up in Cube compilations or GBA carts

Golden Axe? However, I will agree, by in large there aren't a great deal of quality titles for the Genesis that don't feature Sonic or didn't also end up on the SNES.

Well I hope Nintendo makes an agreement with most of the larger third parties to make their games available. I mean, the first party games are great -- I'd buy it for those alone -- but I'd love to play Chrono Trigger and some of the Final Fantsy games as well. Because the third parties won't lose anything, I could see Nintendo making an agreement with the rest of the Big 5. They're close to Namco already, SE has been hinting that they'll work with them, Capcom is open to deals, and Konami might not do it but that doesn't really matter. Unless they really overprice the games or something, I'm sold on the revolution already.

probably not happening..but i have reason to beleive that if someone can do it on an emulator then someone can do it on revolution..but knowing nintendo they wouldnt make somethin g that in depth....

i also wondewr...if i can dowload games and stick them onto an sd card is it possible to play homebrew games off of the sd card...and if so can i also get ahold of revolutions power this way?

I had a wonderful idea! =o

How does this sound?  You buy a(n?) NES or SNES game on the Rev.  You're playing it.  Having fun.  Oh no!  You're going to grandma's, but you really want to continue your game of Adventures of Link.  So you wireless connect your DS to the Rev and you download the game and store it in the DS.  You play it on the way, and let it sleep on the way back.  You upload the game back to your Rev and save.

What's this?  You're caught up in a game of Super Metroid?  But it's time to go on vacation?!  OH NO?!??!  Never fear!  The Rev saves its games to a flash cart.  You stick it in your DS and play.  You can save your game, turn the system off, play some more.  WHATEVER.  YOU'VE GOT THE CART.

I don't know if any of that would be possible, but it would kick ass.  I don't know how much internal memory the DS has, but it'd be enough to hold at least the biggest NES game.  Not sure about SNES though.
