All signs point to that being the official name, but you never know. That's a prototype model, and if that's the final logo then....what the hell?

While it is true that this is just a prototype; I don't recall the gamecube's prototype saying "Dolphin" on it.

Good catch Obiyo. It does say Revolution on it. I think Revolution will be the final name as well.

I hope so too. Perhaps the weird O o symbolizes the different sizes of Rev and Cube discs?
Is that a second indicator light next to the on/off switch? Does the blue one stay on permanently? I definitely like the upward tilt

At first I was upset that it may be the official name, but as I talk about it with friends 'The Rev' just flows so well, I'm starting to like it.
The big disc/small disc play in the logo is cool too.

"Rev" also sounds like the french for "dream". I have no problems calling it that.

If it is the real name, the logo for it is probably temporary. Why would they tout the ability for backwards compatibility in the logo when all the systems are doing it?
BTW, 1up.com says that in the e3 conference, Nintendo said Revolution was the final name, but I dont remember them saying anything about that.

they didn't but they did call it a "Revolution" and have a logo for it at the biggest media event of the year.
Doesn't seem like they'd do that if they're going to slap a different name on it later.
Maybe my memory is rusty, but I don't recall Dolphin logos

I don't remember any prototype that was available while Nintendo was still calling it Dolphin.
Also, revolution is so good of a name that the MSM is actually somewhat supporting Nintendo, despite the meager information available. "Nintendo launches a Revolution." "Nintendo out to Revolution-ize games." "Join the Revolution, Nintendo says." --- etc. Those are mainly made up but if you look around you'll certainly find a few similar titles and favorable stories. Well, unless the coverage tomorrow is much different from the coverage today.

There was a big Revolution logo during the Nintendo Press conference, the same logo that is on that prototype. It doesn't look very inspiring. But the name has grown on me a lot.

All I am going to say that up until four months of the N64 being launched it was the Nintendo Ultra 64 in the states, and they even had logos designed for that. The logo was also used in two arcade games; Killer Instinct and Crusin' USA.
Not that the name bothers me or anything, I don't really care either way.
*EDIT: Grammar and spelling.*

It could happen, but I wouldn't bet on it. I sure don't think that's the final logo...if so, then they need to reconsider. As for the name, I'd be happy if it sticks, but Nintendo said this wasn't the official release party for the system, so until it is, I consider the name to be temporary.

Anyway, I hope they keep Revolution. It's a great name and it's already pretty well known.

Sorry to bump this old thread... but now that that 'Revolution' has been removed from the console, and now that ign is predicting that the system's name will change, I think it's time we started discussing this again.
There's good reason for picking a new name: try typing in 'xbox 360' or 'playstation 3' into Google or Wikipedia. Now try typing in 'revolution'. See what I mean?
So, the question is, if Nintendo picks a new name for their console, what might it be? I like 'Revo' personally.... it sounds like something that could become a household name, sort of like 'Tivo' or "Roomba'. I also like 'N5', because it's simple, and it implies that the system is somehow better than ps3 and xbox 360... and, it might help bring back phrases like "Let's play some Nintendo" - which would be cool. I'd also like to propose my own name: 'Nintendo RES' (Revolutionary Entertainment System), which sounds cool (to me), and would also tie the system into the Nintendo DS.
But what do you guys think? Will Nintendo change the system's name and, if so, what will they change it to?
Title: RE: Revolution = Official Name?
Post by: MrMojoRising on October 24, 2005, 01:27:38 AM
I'm thinking they will change the name based on the new info. I remember hearing a rumor somewhere that they were going to name it NES again...which would be kind of weird which is why I doubt its validity.
I still think "Revo" is lame. I don't mind N5, and I like the idea of being able to say "let's play Nintendo" again as well. As long as they don't call it Gamecube 2 or 1080 or anything I won't really be upset.

I think when it's all said and done that Revolution fits. There is already enough buzz starting to generate from that name. Time Magazine's most positive outlook plus the fact that this really might start a "Gaming Revolution" to change the name to anything but Revolution would be a mistake. Although I do think they might a "The" in front to give it more of a stand out feeling. Nintendo: The Revolution.

well we know from history that Nes, N64 and GC all had name changes before coming out here in america.
N64 had the most name changes I beleive, it was originaly called Prject Reality, Then changed to Ultra 64 with logos and everything being present in maging magazines and arcade games. Then Dolpih became Game Cube. I think Nintendo history shows they are inclined to change the name just because they always do, but I like Revolution so much I hope it either stays the name or gets used heavily in the marketing. Or they could call it the Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System and pay homage to NES/SNES and N64 all at once. UNES? sounds good? OR we coudl call it the new NES. But I hear people who dont even care about GC at all who are excited about teh Rvolution so I think it should stick so not to confuse too many people.

As far as I know Nintendo has only called the system 'Revolution' and not 'Nintendo Revolution'. But even they included Nintendo in the title, most people would know the system as just 'revolution' in much the same way that they know of the GCN as just 'GameCube'. Except, if someone looks up 'gamecube' (or 'playstation', or 'ps3', or 'xbox'), you can be reasonably sure that they'll come up with information about a video game system and not much else.

I like just calling it Rev. You know...like an engine revving up, Rev.
Monosyllabic, exotic "r" and "v" phonemes and a hint of import-tuner edginess.
But there's no way in hell you could get away with that being a console's real, full name, gah.

Revolution has been used for so long now, I think Nintendo might be smart to keep it. Especially since the Time magazine article. However, my guess is Nintendo will still change it.
My votes:
Revolution - Yes. It may be hard to find on internet searches, but I just don't think most consumers stop at Wikipedia before buying a new game system. Besides, the name has personality Revo - No. Seems a little cheesy; Roomba and Tivo get away with it, but their biggest market isn't 12-25 year-old males. Rev - Yes. it allows Nintendo to keep some of the promotional momentum going, and doesn't sound as cheesy as Revo (though I think it's still a little cheesy). NE5 - No. Too Xtreme. NES, NES 5, Nintendo 5, etc. - Yes. I think Nintendo is sitting on a very popular and well-loved brand with the NES, not to mention its own name. Sony has Playstation, MS has Xbox, why not use NES or Nintendo? Plus, as DS, PSP, and a million boring car names have proven, people like names made up of letters and numbers.

If they went with that, the NE5 would have to cost at least $500, with games costing $70, and feature a far uglier design. Besides, they already have enough trouble with third-party support.
