Title: Xbox 360 Live Pic
Post by: RickPowers on May 07, 2005, 10:34:03 AM
In case you guys didn't know, Microsoft and MTV filmed the Xbox 360 unveiling yesterday.  It was only a matter of time, but despite tight security, the first shot of the hardware, controller, headset and EyeToy-esque camera has managed to leak out.

"Borrowing aspects from the PC, the PS2, the Gamecube, and the Ipod, the Xbox 360 promises the fresh, unique gaming experience that you've been playing the last four years!"

Yeah, that's how I stand.  It looks like a PC, it's all sideways like the PS2, the camera IS the Eye-Toy only a bit taller, the controller layout is a mix between the best aspects of the PS2 and GC controllers (let's see if people complain about this like they did the Cube's), and the controllers are wireless ala the Wavebird.  I'd like at least SOMETHING original.

Meh.

The only thing that even remotely strikes my interest is PD0... but I've already had enough FPS action to last me quite a while.

Nintendo could do better than this without any effort... the only obstacle is marketing.

Controller looks blarf.

Edit: and is it just me or are those jotsticks on the controller unusually small?  Or is the Xbox 360 just that big?

No, the controller's aspects seem small to me, too.  I don't see any resemblence to the GC, besides maybe being a little more comfortable to hold and its being wireless (meh).  The Xbox 360 does not look very stylish to me--I wouldn't call it fugly, but I like the Xbox's look more!

Maybe I'm in a bad mood because I have to go to work soon but this thing is pretty damn ugly.  The conroller looks like they took the xbox one and altered it slightly and made it look more like dreamcast's one.  Where is the improvement I ask???  They then tried to (unsucessfully) tap into apples white, sleek designs.  To top it off they stole from Sony's eyetoy idea.  I know stealing can and will occur between companies but there is just something about Microsoft and this new console of theirs that gets to me.

And yes, the console does look enormous yet again.  It is on a pedistool so take that in consideration but comparing it to the manikin head...wow.  To make it worse they decided to make it look "sleeker" by curving it inward on top and bottom but this will just make it more unfriendly next to other electronic equipment.  I guess this is some sort of ploy to make people keep them out for display :S

Ok rant over

Picture of the controller: Xbox 360 controller

Picture of the remote: Xbox 360 remote control

there is a windows button on the remote, and I like the look of that 'Xbox 360' button alot better than the last pic I saw.

They took some elements of Nintendo (Wavebird) some of Sony (Nice looking system, Eye Toy) and combined it to make their console... Dont blame them take the best of your competitors and combine it. Admitedly its a nice looking system... and with Perfect Dark to boot

I join the "meh" camp.

Aside from not being interested in showcasing my handsome mug over Xbox Live, the system itself is sort of fugly. It looks like it wants to be an HTPC. The least they could do is make it look more like a standard appliance by hiding its ugliness in a darker color.

Reggie admits Nintendo made a wrong choice in going for the purple cube, but they'll make something sexier than this.

It's typical Microsoft strategy ... Embrace & Extend.  Analyze the market, see what's working, and either buy it out right or make your own to compete.

"there is a windows button the remote ..."

Not exactly.  It's the Media Center "Start" button, it just has the Windows flag on it because it's become synonymous with "Start".  I did find the inclusion of the XYAB buttons interesting.

System doesn't gel with me at all, much bigger fan of the Xbox design. Controller looks nice from the close up, though, although not very comfortable looking. Reminds me of a mix between the DC (man is that controller a pain to play with) and PS1/2 controller.

Those are for playing RPGS, Rick.

I notice that there is no record button on the remote, making me think that it donsn't have any DVR capabilites that were talked about a while ago.

Looks like a kid's toy. Microsoft is doomed and the 360 will be their last system.

So it's not a trackball.  It's just a gross logo.  Gotta love how MS is willing to sacrifice imporant controller space for a f*cking logo.  I'm looking at this and wondering if MS learned ANYTHING from what people complained about the Xbox.  It's still huge.  It's still looks unstackable.  The controller still looks like it was designed by the marketing department.

If the Xbox was too big for the Japanese then so is the Xbox 360.

And is anyone else uncomfortable with Microsoft putting a camera in your home?  Knowing them you won't be able to turn the thing off.

Though MS is smart in taking all the cool stuff that worked for Sony and Nintendo and adding it to the existing Xbox design.  Taking good ideas from the competition is a good idea.  If you always try to be different you get demo discs only being available to new console purchasers.

But even with some new stuff added this is looking far too similar to the first Xbox.  We've discussed this in another thread but it's too soon.  Rumour has it the 360 will launch on the Xbox's fourth anniversary.  That's far too soon.  This looks more like Xbox+ than a brand new console.  I don't think being different is required or even a guarenteed advantage but if Nintendo truly has something new that is really amazing they're going to have an advantage.  This thing is too similar.  It relies on Sony and Nintendo also being very similar or Nintendo being different but in a bad way.

From the picture with a coiled-up cable, that camera looks detachable.  Heck, I wonder if it is even included with the system (has that been confirmed?)

Ugly as sin.

If the console was smaller, it'd look sexy. The controller however, looks like coimplete crap. What the hell is that ball doing in the middle of the controller?

White is a good color.....for the console that is. It makes the controller look like a toy, as in something that's easily breakable. If I didn't know Nintendo's reputation, I would of thought the same for the GC controller. It doesn't look very comfortable either, but hell.........what do we know? We only play games more than the average user.

The camera....god why?! What are you trying to do microsoft? The only experience I had communicating online via xbox, was a horrible one. THEY WOULDN"T SHUT THE HELL UP! Now with this camera......I don't want to see dorks at their immaturist.....I don't want to see dorks at all. And what's the point? It's not like it's going to make gaming any more fun. If I kill some guy in Halo, I don't need to see him flicking me off, or worse, and mooning the camera while spanking himself.

Is this the future?

I guess will have to wait till E3, as usual.

As far as I'm concerned, cameras only belong in a) text messaging programs with people you know and trust and b) lame Eyetoy games.

But then again, there have been rumors of text messaging... let's see where MS is going with this. Most likely it's just another step in the idiotic process of crossbreeding PCs and consoles that MS seems to be fascinated with.

Last I heard, the button on the middle of the controller was supposed to switch frequencies (notice the four numbers around it, which implies a 4 player cap per X360) and call up some sort of Xbox Live menu. It's not just for cosmetic value (or lack thereof).

This poses another question, how will they avoid unappropriate behavior?  There are perverts out their and just plain stupid people out there that will put pictures of not-so-nice stuff up there.  Nudity, gore, hate symbols, you name it WILL appear.  I've used my fair share of speech devices while playing games and I know how rediculously irritating and/or unappropriate things can get but atleast then I can mute them and continue playing my game.  If MS makes you go through them to check every image change you make on Live then it won't be all that quick and easy and will raise the price of Live, if they don't it will allow for the nonsense mentioned above...not a good situation eh?

I think and hopefully microsoft will include filtering, censor bars or even moderators. But still we all know even those are easily beatable. And we all know how lame most xbox live players are with their headsets

Doesn't 360 amount to going around in a full circle and ending up right where you started?

Oh yeah, and bleh. If I didn't consider the Xbox an overhauled PC, I do now.

All I can say is its very blah.  It looks exactly like what it is...a very slight upgrade to the X-Box.  The real question is what will the public think?

I still think the video game industry is still MTV enough to push this system on like the X-Box, but I really feel like the bottom is going to fall out eventually if MS stays on its current course.

Well.  Supposedly that X-Box Button is going to be something new...and were the innovation is...but what is it.  When I saw it I just thought it was a microphone...but supposedly its something else, but what can it be in such a horrible placement.  I like how its placed right between two other buttons so you can accidentally press those buttons.

Also It seems Perfect Dark Zero is the launch game, and that MS is trying to use Perfect Dark as their new Halo.  I wonder if it will work?

Ha.

X-box Live 360.  If they do need moderators to watch image content and games and such can you imagine the money they would be losing?  Unless they are all volunteers then the pay for that alone would be pretty high.

Spak-Spang..Why not write that in one full post???

I believe that Xbox Live users with cameras will be some of the most obnoxious and annoying teens you will ever meet. Sure not all will be like that........but i doubt there is any way of substantially monitoring/moderating all of the userbase at any given time.

Smack-tards never fail to appear or find some brand new way to mess with a game in a negative light regardless of distance. Lan or half a world away, they will be there. Can't go online without them

Whether it is TKing, being an absolute noob (Read the bloody handbook), uncalled for vote kicking, being a jackass, being abusive, blocking players, hacking, being a 12 year old on drugs and god knows what else.

Most of them avoid I have found games that require any form of real tactical thinking or teamwork (FIXED BAYONETS MEN!!11). Money is never a barrier. Most smack tards are impatient (GOGOGogogogGOGOG). If there are long-term consequences to what they do, there are fewer in number(Banning/temp bans). If the community as a whole is stable and polite smack tards are reduced in number due to a squezzing out effect where to there is too much good will going around from them to get a mob reaction in thier favor(Mob turns on them).

Another thing about the camera...

I don't want even a small box on my screen containing some picture.  I want to see everything going on around me.  Especially if Microsoft continues to ride Halo, one needs to see the whole screen in a FPS.

Live camera, sweet. Maybe I can engage in some STRIP HALO with one of those sponsored gamer girls.

....Well, someone will try it at least. Not me because I don't plan on buying this deskt--I mean console.
