Title: Marionette
Post by: CrYpTiC on February 16, 2003, 05:45:37 PM
I don't know if theres already a thread about this or not so I will start my own. Is it me or does this game sound like a female Mario game with a horrible name. "Mario"nette. I believe it's being made by Nintendo which gives me more reason to believe so. I hope I am not right...

you sure it wasn't spelled like the marionette dolls or puppets.  Those types of games are big in japan, where you control a character and teach it emotions and such.  Or maybe i am wayyyy of and it is gonna be a bizzare Mario game.

I'm hoping its the nickname of Nintendo's online strategy. Mario + Internet = Mario + Net = Marionette

Here's to wishing!

And I guess you got this from Iwata during your regular phone conversations, eh?

Anyway.

I believe it's either the codename for their online plans/strategy, or a game itself.  It sounds like it could be a type of online Mario game.

I don't think it has anything to do with puppets at all.  And if it does, it's still *most likely* going to be Mario-related... don't think that the name is a coincidence.

Actually I'm pretty sure I read something like that too. Unfortunately it has been so long ago I have no clue where I read it.

EDIT: Okay I found where I read that. It was in one of PGC news updates for the game. Click here. Read through the guy's comments especially Justin's and Rick's at the end.

Nintendo/Shiggy have long confirmed it has nothing to do with Mario or the internet. It has to to with puppets, just as the word says.

According to Planet Gamecube and Cube IGN, it IS a game and not a service. To clear up things further, a marionette is a small puppet with moveable limbs usually conrtolled by strings.

Just so that i cover all bases, there's was a Dreamcast game Marionette Handler where you had to program mechs. Chances are it's not that game.

"you sure it wasn't spelled like the marionette dolls or puppets. Those types of games are big in japan, where you control a character and teach it emotions and such. Or maybe i am wayyyy of and it is gonna be a bizzare Mario game. "

Er, what?  Why would you teach a marionette emotions and stuff?  You confuse me.

Anyway, yes, this is going to be a puppet game.  Personally, I think it's an awesome idea.  If you don't know, marionettes are puppets controlled by strings from above the stage.  The controls would be vastly different from normal games, but would allow for a great amount of freedom with the right physics.  Maybe it could be a fighting game, or a dancing game.

Microsoft are releasing a game like this in Japan, to try an boost sales.
You use the microphone, and you teach this Anime robot chick in a short skirt and tight shirts (Fook Mi and Fook Yu style - right down to the hair from the screens I saw) to be more human. I forgot what the name of the game is called. But it's something pretty suggestive. I think it's called P.O.R.N. or something.
But, like DOAXBV, the only thing going for it is sex appeal, and the only people who will buy it are horny 30 year olds who still live with their mums. Cause we all know that when you have control of a hot chick like that who will obey anything you say, it's gonna get a bit 'out of hand', if you know what I mean.
But will it work?
Most definitely. RahXephon says games like this are pretty popular, so yeah, it probably will be.

I believe that game is called N.U.D.E
Don't ask me what it stands for, but in my opinion, it does sound like a rather original concept. Kinda like "Hey You, Pikachu" except with an actual purpose to the communication..
And I have no doubt it'll be a smash hit in it's homeland. I mean c'mon, it's where the likes of hentai (Not to mention gore hentai ;_; ) and buying panties via vending machines were born!

Oh please, don't just flame people because you think you are right, check your dictionary first next time.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Marionette

apparently Marionette IS a puppet, I don't need Iwata to tell me, because checking out a dictionary is just as easy.

Everyone knows that a marionette is a puppet.  No one contested that.

I just said that it is HIGHLY LIKELY that this game has SOMETHING to do with Mario.

Do you people REALLY think that it's going to be a new property after waiting since StarFox for new games and getting Pikmin and Animal Crossing?  If even PART of the title has "Mario" in it, you can pretty much count on the game being Mario-based.

The point I was making to you, dogcow, is that there's NO real info on this game.  No screenshots, and Nintendo doesn't talk about it.  So until they *do*, it's not definitely a puppet game and it sure as hell isn't known whether or not it's based on Mario or not.

Nintendo may have said something about this game that leads you to believe one thing, but they're also the company that said it was untrue that they were dropping the price of the GC to $149.95 as late as three days prior to the drop.  That was a flat-out lie, and they sometimes use those tactics to hide or disguise their true intentions.

x.o Aol. >/ Kick meh off..Oh well. Yea, the article for N.U.D.E. is in the December 2002 issue of Play, the one with Samus, on page 018. It's just a small, half page article, with a picture to the side of it. It stands for Natural Ulimate Digital Experiment. The system for the gameplay is supposed to be like Seaman, Sega's er..game on Dreamcast. o.O Except you nurture the development of a anime chick..looks hentaisih. o.o; the picture looks like it has good graphics. @.@ The rest of the article just talks about how you teach her everything, she's basicly a mindless hottie when you start out with her. O.o Doesn't say if it'll ever reach stateside, but they stated When it does reach stateside..etc, so possibly it will. :B I'm sure I can do alot of stuff with this game. >.>! ::Stuffs magazine back under pile of other magazines:: o.o;

Dr Synthetic so according to your logic there's no point of doing any sensible guesses
Marionette might be their Code name of ........ OMG Nintendo going 3rd party !!!!

Why ??
Mario = Nintendo
Net = many lines corssing and stuff, means Mario everywhere !!!
te = let's just ignore this mart

So Marionette = Nintendo going 3rd party !!!

who ever say the otherwise you must have got your info. from Iwata or better yet Yamauchi.

marionette = a puppet (the one's with strings attached to their hands and feet that you could move around)

end of discussion already!

Correct.  You should know by now not to believe Nintendo until you HOLD the product in your HAND.  Even *screenshots* lie, like the Zelda SpaceWorld 2000 shots.

Guesses are fine, but things like "it's a puppet game" that are stated like fact can confuse people, when no one really knows what's up with it.  Message boards start so many rumors through statements like that, and people inevitably get either disappointed or angry when what they expected doesn't come to fruition.

I'm sure I remember seeing something about it at E3 2002...

I don’t think it was shown at E3 2002. You might be thinking of Nintendo’s fumble of listing Marionette on their E3 site last year. That is probably what you’re thinking of… A matter of fact, that’s what started this whole thing!

Someone mentioned "weird games" and I suddenly remembered (that I forgot about) this game.

Actually, not that original, other than the voice aspect, the idea was already done with two "Wonder Project J" titles, the second one being released for the N64 in Japan. Not to mention about 50 anime titles... ^_^;

Marionette is just one of those projects we're not really going to be able to call until he pulls the lid off of it, and we go, "...Oh." We could be manipulating a puppet with the control stick and C-stick for all we know, heck, it could be some Lemmings-style adventure title in a storybook graphical setting where you have to manipulate the puppet's limbs and body just at the right times to correctly get him past dangers. That would have "Miyamoto" written all over it, I could see it now...  The puppet would be bound together with little swivel points at the limbs instead of moving correctly (think to Glove On Fight, if you've ever seen it)... the little flat sprite trees panning by as he passes...

I'm just going to go think happy thoughts about Mario Kart Online now...

When this whole Marionette thing came up ages ago I was doing my usual wild guess thing and I came up with what i think is a pretty cool idea.
A game where you control a string puppet (maybe a mario puppet, whatever).
the way you control it, is the interesting part.

you link up the GBA to you GC.
put one of those tilt'n'tumble cartridges into your GBA, then you use the GBA just like an imaginary puppet is hanging underneath it. you tilt the GBA to wobble your on-screen puppet. Maybe press L or R to make it jump or punch, whatever you can think of.
the game could be very cool. you could even have 4 GBA's plugged into one GC, and have a big puppet show, or puppet brawl, or something. Maybe a puppet RPG

Ok, i know this goes back to the XBOX game N.U.D.E.  But heres what i know about it, and maybe through it it will help get an idea of what Marionette will be.

N.U.D.E. stands for Natural Ultimate Digital Experience.
There will be some sex appeal, but EVERYTHING anime has some sex appeal.  They have a much diffrent view on what is acceptable than we do.
The robots name is P.A.S.S. which i dont yet know means.
If anyone has seen chobits then they get a small idea of what to accpect.
You teach it EVERYTHING.  It is sorta like a 1 on 1 sims game, only you dont have to watch them 24/7.
You teach it basic greetings and manors.  How to eat and of course, lots of fan service.
-My take on the game is I am extremely excited.  I am engaged and do not play the games for the girls.  This will obviously be a new level of enterrainment and involvement.  I hope it will fill the gap that Seamen has left on the dreamcast.  I love interactive games and I think with the Xbox Hardwear it will be great.

Ok now what i think will be in marionette.
You are in control of a puppet, but you control by choice commands, not direct interface.
The pupppet must do certain things to make so many friends and become real.
their will very likely be a choice between a boy or girl marionette.
the visuals will be either cel shaded or Animal crossing, with more porportionate body sizes.
-my take is the game, if it is what i think, will be good, but a little empty.  With N.U.D.E. to compare with it will have some competion.  The game will probably rely more on replay and less on the experience itself.  Miyamoto is making it, which means it will definetly be at least good.

Yeah, so it's called NUDE.
Nude, Porn, what's the difference.
The thing is that NUDE is a communication game, but the only way they could make it work was to put an almost Hentai inspired hottie into it. And while the game will PROBABLY change the way the Japanese view XBox, it's still another cheap sex appeal ad to me.
And you can quote me on that.
I would only buy cause I'm a horny teenage male. As is why DOA Extreme Beach Vollyball is pretty popular at the moment.

Stop.  Everything.

At least several months ago, in August I believe, it was stated that Marionette was indeed nothing more than a game where you controlled-get this-a marionette.  The Planet GameCube article quoted is out of date, as I got this information from Planet GameCube.  It was speculated that this had something to do with the motion sensing technology Nintendo had licensed earlier.  We have heard, if I am correct, nothing on the project since.  And the Zelda Spaceworld 2000 thing?  It wasn't a lie, considering that was how the project was at the time.

Perhaps, maybe, this will go back to being a discussion not about N.U.D.E.?
