Title: Snowboard Kids Sells its Soul
Post by: couchmonkey on March 28, 2005, 06:58:31 AM
Any comments on the new art style for Snowboard Kids? As you can probably tell, I'm not too impressed. I thought the original style had a lot of personality. The new character just seems so generic. I guess I just can't appreciate deliberate attempts to be cool.

What was so good about the original?
New one looks about the same.

I have no problems with the new style. They still look like kids. What I don't get is the massive love for this game. I remember playing the N64 version, and I wasn't that impressed. I didn't hate the game, but the cult following of the game is interesting.

I personally like the new style slot better than the old.

I sort of see where you're coming from, Spak-Spang, the series definitely feels like an inferior knock-off of Mario Kart...yet it's a pretty fun knock-off and the snowboarding aspect makes it stand out from the dozens of other kart games that were around at the time. I think for people that really love the game, the novelty of snowboarding crossed with Mario-Kart style combat outweighs the fact that it's not quite as well tuned as the original.
As for the art style, the new style isn't actually bad, but it just feels... uninspired to me. Compared to the previous character designs with their huge noses and nutty outfits, this one looks so generic. I feel like I'm looking at a Bratz doll.

I like it just because I really love SquareSoft artwork, and it sort of looks like that. Like Musashi Samurai artwork or something.

Counchmonkey I have a question how can you judge a whole game new game with just 1 concept art of a character vs 2 older games that are playable. I suggest you wait until screenshots or playable demos are release first. And please explain to me how exactly it selling it soul since theres no screenshots, play able demos, video demos of Snow Board Kids DS

Haha, he ISN'T judging the game as a whole in any way whatsoever. He merely asked for others' opinions on the artwork released... which is a HUGE change. Even though Snowboard kids wasn't the biggest title of it's day, it still has a pretty sizeable cult following.
As for my opinion on the artwork, I've never seen a "kid" built like that. Looks like they traded in unique charm for some lame ass attempt at sex appeal along with the same old "Xtreme" bulljive that corporations having been jamming down kids' throats for the past 5 years. Imagine if Nintendo one day decided to make Mario more "Xtreme", I bet lots of people would be pissed. Look what happened when they drastically changed the artstyle from Zelda's old Spaceworld video to the one used in Wind Waker (not Xtreme, but a change nonetheless).
A change like this definitely warrants conversation... even if it is just one image. If I were a die-hard Snowboard Kids fan, (which I'm not), it would affect me.

The breasts are bigger now... which is strange, considering it's called Snowboard Kids.

I'll take the wait and see approach with this one, though I'm hoping the art change isn't to cover up a game coming along badly.

Thanks, Mr. Segali, you said exactly what I was thinking. I'm just discussing the art style. If the game turns out well, then great! I won't base my purchasing decision just on the art.
I have to add that I do think it's a nice piece of artwork and I like the design, but I just don't think it has the personality of the original character designs. The original Snowboard Kids were, in my opinion, a triumph of cartooning. They were distinctive and funny and instantly recognizable. This is like taking the characters from South Park or Ren and Stimpy or Looney Tunes and redoing them in a generic anime style (shades of Lunatics).
But I hope the game turns out so good that I can't resist it even if it isn't the Snowboard Kids I remember.

Probably because the first Snowboard Kids came out when the N64 had its gigantic lack of games early on, DS style yo! (Wikky waaa). So there wasn't much to turn to, and everyone was all like "yeah, I'll get this because there hasn't been a new game in two months! This game ROCKS"
I dunno. ;__;

1080 pounded Snowboard Kids into the ground... and then SSX came along as usurped them both.
I'd like to see a DS version of either 1080 or SSX...

You'd probably see 1080 before SSX on the DS these days.

EA did make a 3D version of SSX on the GBA though, so I think a DS version is at least a possibility.

And personally I think it looks cool, I bareley remember the N64 version but it just looks like they grew up little, their bodies actually match the size of their heads.
