Title: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: PaLaDiN on March 18, 2005, 10:57:54 AM
Why isn't there a thread for this game yet?
Anyway, I bought it yesterday and I love it... my arms hurt now.
I never actually thought it would be this fun... reminds me of Tony Hawk back in the day when it was still fun to play. Stringing together combos is awesome.

Would you say the game is worth ten extra dollars for the bongos, if I don't intend to buy any of the Donkey Kong games (ie, I'll probably only use the bongos for this game)? I'm definitely interested in this, it looks absolutely awesome, I'm just wondering if it's worth the investment.

I hear the game is pretty bad without the bongos. If you're interested in getting this, the bongos are a must purchase.

Arg, I want to get this so bad...Screw how short it is, if it's fun I don't care...

Post by: Flames_of_chaos on March 18, 2005, 11:25:08 AM
The game is very short but very fun and the fun factor can warrant more replay value if you want to top your high score. The game is 39.99 without bongos and 54.99 with bongos. (U.S. price)

Post by: PaLaDiN on March 18, 2005, 11:59:03 AM
Yeah, if you're going to buy this game at all, you need the bongos. Just think of them as part of the game.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: KnowsNothing on March 18, 2005, 01:17:32 PM
I should have gotten this with the bongos, seeing as it would be like getting another pair for $15....ah well. I didn't pay for it, my brother did.
Anywho, awesome game. I've had a few problems with clap detection, which is very annoying when it happens, but it really is amazing how well the game controls using only two giant buttons and a mic. The controls aren't flawless, but they work surprisingly well. Playing with the regular controller is terrible, though, so get the bongos (and then you can get Konga 2!)The game isn't TOO short on its own, but the replay value is where it's at. My wrists are killing me ;____;
Combos are hard ;_____;

Post by: Hostile Creation on March 18, 2005, 01:27:39 PM
I hear if you whack the sides of the bongos it'll be more likely to pick up than if you clap. Yeah, I was going to buy it with bongos or not at all. Looks like I'll go for it, though. Thanks, guys. I may even get Konga 2, if it's cheap enough or something.
Title: RE:Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Flames_of_chaos on March 18, 2005, 01:28:48 PM
The only big annoyance I had with the game is that bosses are repeated. they are just harder versions of the same previous boss.
Title: RE:Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Caterkiller on March 19, 2005, 07:44:40 PM
I am loving this game so much I can't believe it. We've unlocked most everything I beleive, but my brother and I are still trying ot get the platinum metals. I say it is so worth a buy. And as far as the clap detection goes, I adjust it to where it works perfect for me. You can adjust the clap sensor you know in the options menu. This is the Donkey Kong game I have been waiting for since DKC2; DKC3 and 64 were pretty crappy to me.

Quick question: If you rent this game (or Donkey Konga) from Blockbuster, do they include the bongos?
I haven't been to a Blockbuster in years, so I have no idea how they work anymore...
Title: RE:Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Flames_of_chaos on March 20, 2005, 03:25:00 AM
MattOz I highly doubt it because blockbuster rarely rents out hardware more. And Im taking a hunch that Blockbuster only bought the game as standalones not the ones with the bongos.

The first stage of the Grape Kingdom has convinced me that Nintendo Tokyo is on the same stuff the NiGHTS team was on.
This game is awesome, but physically tiring! I've found I actually have to rest a day after playing through one of the later stages (and facing a boss who just wouldn't freakin DIE)

Hands down this game is awesome...and coming from a relatively busy person, it isn't short at all. This is the direction the DK series needs to go in. It isn't just another platform...it is a whole new game concept... I hope we see many more games like this in the future.

If this was actually longer, my hands wouldn't be able to take the abuse. It's a shame there's no extras though for getting all the Platinums.

Post by: Caterkiller on March 21, 2005, 05:14:34 PM
I took it to my job today and showed them how it worked and I was surprised at how much fun they had. They thought it looked complicated, I don't see how with 3 "buttons." But after they played it they had a blast and found after a few minutes it was pretty easy. Most just thought it looked and felt so cool to hop around all over the place and sock the crap out of enemies like that.

Okay, this is high on my list of must-haves, now. Between the awesome review and all of you, I decided to buy it (bongos and all, of course). I'll probably just go with the birthday shindig, considering I'm not going to have any money to buy it with. I'm definitely looking forward to it, though.

Ok guys, I've just finished beating Ghastly King -- you need 51 crests to get to him -- and saw the end credits. As those who have finished the game knows, there are little gameplay clips that are shown during the credits. One of the clips shows DK landing from a bird with over 3000 beats! My question is, does anybody know what level that was done in and how?

Holy crap.. I got this a few days ago, and this might be my favourite game of all time.
If you haven't played it, GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW.
I can not find a single flaw in this game, besides my hands hurting from playing too much. It's like.. old Sonic mixed with old Mario mixed with tons of brilliant new things that feel like they were awesome games that should have come out ages ago but never did, all wrapped up in graphics as beautiful as Wind Waker.

Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

It's because Donkey Kong doesn't have a gun, and Candy Kong doesn't appear between levels to grant DK "favors"...

Meh Gamespot gives many games lower scores. If you want higher check ign.
I tend to prefer Gamerankings anyways much nicer to look at an average

Hostile Creation: Diddo
I was interested about this game, but didn't yet think it was worthy of the $60+ price tag (I don't have bongos).
You guys seem to be insanely in love with it (especailly Bill) and since you guy are like me, NINTENDO FANS, I have to buy it now.
Also Paladin told me that my idea for Mario 128 was similar to Jungle Beat, which is.......fantastic!
Title: RE:Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Caterkiller on March 27, 2005, 06:18:59 AM
My brother and I were trying to figure out how that player got 3,000 beats during that stage, but we couldn't figure it out. I remember we realized what stage it was but I forgot now. And its not spoiler at all, I could tell you what happens at the end and im pretty sure no one would care when they found out. Its alot like old Sonic games. And its basicly a gameplay tip not a cut scene at the end.
Im pretty sure there will be a sequal to this game, I don't think for GCN though. But I wonder if we will see a few other classic characters like Diddy Kong, Rambi, Squaks, or even a barrel. Not to say I don't like the all new cast, I love them, i'd take Orco(or what ever the Orcas name is) over Enguard any day. And the pigs and new apes are pretty darn cool. But it would be nice to have some familiar faces in a new game. I wouldn't even mind tag teaming for really long stages.

How in the heck did you manage to get over 2000 in banana kingdom? I can barely pass 1,200. There has got to be some key area I am missing.

Seriously? Crazy, I got 1451.
Cactus King... anyone do better than 1248? I got as creative as I could in there. The only thing I might be missing are the Ninjapes. Can't seem to grab them in that level.
I think the 3000+ score was in Cloudy Heights. I'm pretty sure it's possible to combo that whole stage, but the little bugs are killer.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Mario on April 02, 2005, 01:54:58 AM
I got 3000+ in Pineapple Kingdom (both levels in two huge combos), but it wasn't the one in the clip. That was in the Chilli Pepper Kingdom, which I haven't fully explored yet, but I can already tell those bugs are going to be a hassle.
I'm just doing one level at a time now and not moving to the next one until I maximize my potential beats as best I can. Very addictive!

I still haven't even finished the game.
I do one level at a time, make sure I get at least gold, then turn off the GC for a while and get back to work.
After I'm done I'll start all over again and get platinums instead.

No affence to anyone, but Ive always hated DK games. The controls, graphics and enemies (plus the annoying abysses every where) all forced me to dislike them. Though I really did want to. Really. I have allways thought that the controls were fiddly but the bongos make it sound even harder. All your belly aching about your wrists has now really put me off it. I am very lathargic (I only just keep healthy by eating 1000kcal instead of 2000kcal.) To reiterate a) I have never liked DK b) the controls sound hard and tireing and c) why bother getting some bongos I am never going to otherwise use.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: PaLaDiN on April 03, 2005, 11:33:31 AM
a)The controls, graphics and enemies are pretty different this time around. b)The controls are very easy and they won't be tiring if you do one level at a time. c)Think of it as a $60 game.
If nothing else, give it a chance somehow... rent it or play it at somebody's house. I'm not telling you you'll love it, but I am telling you there's a pretty good chance you'll be surprised.

I have braught over so many friends to play this game, and each time they see it they say "the controls look to complicated" and then I tell them their are only 3 buttons, you'll figure it out. After about 10 minutes it's so simple to them. You really should give it a chance 09n, this game is far different then any DK game befor it.

I don't believe there's a bottomless pit anywhere in this game. If you fall, you just lose points and get knocked to the nearest platform.
btw, only four platinums left. I'll probably have this done soon.

Hey KnowsNothing, let me give you a little hint that you may not be aware of. Other than secret areas that have more bananas, try things like this:
back flip onto a wall, wall jump away, clap the bush that springs you up, then pound back onto the bush and grab it again. Thats already a 5 combo befor any beats. Thats how you really rack it up. And eventualy you learn even better ways of doing things like this.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Yeah, you have to turn like 36 bananas in Cactus King's stage into 200+. You definitely have to trick it out.

Caterkiller: Thanks for the advice, but I already know about all that stuff I think I just have a hard time seeing possible combos, and an even harder time pulling them off. Making for a really really hard time.
I can get some pretty okay scores on some off the later levels, but if I'm being beat by 1100 on level one I am unworthy of being in this thread D=

Best game EVER......or that I've played in awhile, I just got it today. This past few months have been really good for games. So many old school high score, play for fun, simple games. Warioware, Yoshi Touch and Go, Donkey Kong Jungle beat, all so good. This game is awesome, I would be playing it right now, but its nighttime, and I really bang on those bongos.
The boss battles are a lot of fun, I really enjoy the mohawk pig thing, and the other apes. The kung-fu master one was awesome, it felt so cool to dodge the hits to hit him. The controls are really fluid. In the first swimming stage I had problems swimming in a straight line, but I played a swing feel with the music and DK was swimming straight like nothing. The natural rhythm that the game creates is fantastic.
Also those score are incredible...will I ever get that good?

Cactus King - 1248 - Bloodworth Ghastly King - 1234 - Bloodworth
Added Bloodworths scores, and I just got 2785 on Chilli Pepper Kingdom, which I added as well. I can get more on that one... but it's hard.

Seriosuyl i'm pretty sure I'm better that you at Cherry and Melon kingdoms. I will get scores soon.

God, I've been meaning to pick up DK: Jungle Beat ever since I played it at gamestop a few weeks back... but now I feel obligated to do it ASAP after seeing these numbers:

Yes, everyone is overlooking it because you control it with bongo's, this is one of my favourite, if not my favourite game EVER, everyone go buy it right now.

My scores for the first 4 stages are...
Banana -2228 Orange - 1525 WaterMelon- 1921 Apple 1403
For such a stylistic game, its disappointing the last bosses arent as hard as they should be...

Are these Top scores, that you guys are posting, the number of bananas caught in a single kingdom? I'm asking because I just got the game yesterday and I've got for every kingdom that I unlocked (up to Grape I think) gold medals/tokens (except for Banana Kingdom) but I'm still having a hard time finding that much Bananas.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Mario on April 29, 2005, 06:29:35 PM
Finding the bananas is just the first step, you have to extract as many points as you can from them. Say there's a bunch of 5 bananas, you could just walk into them and get 5 added to your beats total, or you could backflip into a wall, walljump, ground pound into a monkey that throws you up or a jelly, bounce up and THEN clap and grab all the bananas at the same time and you'd get about 50 beats just for those 5 bananas.
Just keep playing and you'll get the hang of it and start to notice more combo opportunities.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Bartman3010 on April 29, 2005, 06:45:06 PM
Pretty much, basically. What happens is the number doubles if you clap next to banannas. That way you can grab a group of banannas around you, and double the points. And performing certain actions like backflipping, wall jumping or manipulating some other items causes a combo, that way you can keep adding to your overall score, so long as you dont get hit once.
Oh, and I've (Barely) broke some records myself.
Melon Kingdom - 1483 Ghastly King - 1268
I'd watch out, Mario, I'm not so far off from you (Though I doubt anyone else is, either...)
Edit: If you beat Ghastly King, you'll see clips of some of the bigger combos pulled off. Especially about over 3000 on the first level of the Chilli Pepper Kingdom.

I find that watching a friend play can really help you spot combos. I was watching a friend today, and went back and replayed the levels he played through, and was able to remember what was coming up next and where to jump to etc.
Also, how exactly does one preform a backflip, I'm having a lot of trouble with it.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Bartman3010 on April 29, 2005, 07:44:55 PM
Move in the opposite direction you want to jump, let go of that bongo, now hit the other bongo and hold it, then press and hold the other one.
Say if you wanted to jump left, and you stood still. Hit right twice, let go quickly, press and hold left, then press and hold right while he skids.

I went ahead and picked this game up a few days ago. I thought it looked stupid until I saw a video of someone playing it at last years E3. I had bought Donkey Konga when it first came out, and my friends and I have had a blast with that. Jungle Beat makes me glad I own a set of Bongo's. It makes very good use of the unique controls, and has been a very enjoyable experience. Anyone who owns Donkey Konga should definately give this game a try.

Yeah I don't like it either, I finally figured out a way to beat that helibird dash and come first in that, but i'm nowhere near the maximum amount of beats I can get in the second level, there's lots of different variables.
I could probably do a lot better in almost all of those but I was just beating you guys scores for now. I don't see myself stopping playing this game anytime soon though, it's still so much fun, and there's always places to improve on scores.
Except maybe Cactus King, I got as many bananas as I could from those three Ninja Monkeys and from everywhere else in the level, but those Ninja Monkeys are the only variable in that one. I wonder if it's possible to get those bananas from the Ninja Monkeys by doing that 5 combo which is just before them, anyone tried that?

Hey Mario, my Banana Kingdom is now at 2,488. You may have beaten that already but I know I can get more. Normaly I would leave that level alone since I beat your score, but I know your going to top it, so im going to go at it until I reach 2,500 once thats accomplished any any and all scores above that I will not care about.
I havn't played a game like this to reach top scores for my own pleasure since Star Fox 64.

I got this game earlier this month. Awesome game. Incredible, I love it. However, your scores grind mine into the dust. I'm getting better at it, but my highest score is something like 1,306 (Peach or Cherry, don't recall which). I suppose I'll have to keep practicing. Fun game, though. I'm sweating at the end of every kingdom (just like playing SSBM in my friend's 90 degree room again ), and my hands hurt from clapping.

So does this game feel like the next in the series of DK Country games? Or is it a whole new branch off?
'cause let me tell you.....I spent many 'a hours playing and playing and playing DKC...
Title: RE:Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Caterkiller on May 18, 2005, 07:16:26 AM
This game is alot like the DKC games except it flows better and its alot more satisfying to beat up the bad guys. Oh and you won't find any classic Country characters in this game except DK and the banana.
Any who Mario, I finally did it, I will never ever try and play Banana Kingdom again for a high score because I reached an amazing 2515 beats this morning. If you do beat it, or if you have already beat it, that is A O K with me, because I reached my goal and I am satisfied.
Once again 2,515 Beats for BANANA KINGDOME.

HOLY CRAP, i'm still struggling, but I know I can get that high. How many beats do you get at the end of level beats? I can never get more than 64 usually, though sometimes i fluke and get 67 or something.
Well done

Sometimes I can fly around for ages on a bird, but sometimes they get tired after a minute and drop me... it's strange.

Sorry Dasmos.
I actualy have no idea why they get tired. At first I assumed the first blue bird would never get tired on Strawberry but I was wrong, Now every time I have to use a bird I try to do what I need to do fast before they get tired.

I was wondering about buying this game.... I saw a copy of it at a flea market for a pretty low price, but it didn't seem to come with the drums so I decided to pass on it. I think I'll just buy it at full price instead. Current Generation platformers are pretty fun. On top of that fact, it's delivered with a gimmick so it seems promising.

OH YEAH! I finally beat Caterkiller in Banana Kingdom and it was only after 3 times of trying. I've gotten better at the drumming at the end of the stages, hence why I have beaten some score by a mere 2 to 3 beats. Oh man, it was about a year ago right now when I was coming off my two month long RE4/Minish Cap high and this friggin game was what I sobered up with. And then I got high on this game. And I think some cocaine was involved somewhere along the way... Early 2005 RULED.
Anyways, I love this game. It's one of those games where I could play all of the levels dozens of times and still want more (much like my coke), a sensation I haven't felt since the first four Mario games (or my last injection). Too bad reviewers didn't really like the game and no one bought it. I thought it was pure genius. Let's hope the Revolution gives us more of this type of gaming.

I was looking at some old screenshots
What's with the combo meter at the top? I'm guessing it just filled up as you kept getting higher in a combo, what would have happened if it reached the peak? DK gets some uber attack or agility move to get even MORE combo? I don't remember those places in any levels either, I wish I could somehow play the E3 demo.

I beat my Pear Kingdom score, with a 1904. Also my total beat count is at 406,871. It should be much higher seeing the amount of times I have restarted the level after screwing up at some point.

Sorry for bumping this thread but I need help.
I'm trying to get gold on every sinlge kingdom, I could go for platinum on some stages even but gold is more than enough.
However I am having the most dificult time to reach gold on the first kingdom (Banana), I always only get between 700 and 750 bananas.
Am I missing some secret area where there are more bananas to collect or something, I'm good on combos but on this level I just can't seem to.
I have all kingdoms unlocked but the last one that requires 51 medals, that's why I'm only going for the gold when I know it is enough to unlock that 51-medals-kingdom.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how the hell 2000+ beats is possible on Banana Kingdom. I played DKJB the other day just for kicks and rediscovered how much I suck.
2000 BEATS WTF. You need to videotape yourself doing that just so I can sleep at night =(

I recommend asking Mario considering he's the resident Jungle Beat champ...But if I'm recalling this right, there IS a "secret" area that has a bunch more bananas...You also gotta try and stay in the air as long as possible to build up that combo...
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: vudu on October 21, 2006, 07:56:22 PM
I don't think I'm playing this game right. I can manage to get 1000+ beats on every kingdom on a regular basis, but I certainly can't get any where near any of the high scores. I think the problem lies in keeping my combo meter for extra long lengths of the levels. They tend to die when theh should rather than when I want them to.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: Mario on October 21, 2006, 11:36:11 PM
I have actually been playing this still and beaten a few scores up there, maybe i'll update it later.
Thanks, but I've actually seen that before. Unfortunately, that just doesn't seem like a fun way to play the game. I need to strike a balance between being awesome and not sucking the fun out of the game by trying to get my combo meter up to four for every loan banana I find.
Title: RE: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Post by: IceCold on October 22, 2006, 01:16:28 PM
I actually just started playing this again.. Vudu, I'm in the same boat - I only do the backflip ground pound when it's warranted; it just kills the flow of the game. And if one thing shines for Jungle Beat, it's the flow of the game..

There are plenty of smooth levels, try Watermelon Kingdom, Grape Kingdom or Chili Pepper kingdom. For me though getting the highest score is sort of about strategy and learning everything about the level.
