A prototype of the new portable might be out by year-end, but mass production of the new device probably would not happen until next year, he said.


first a possible battery upgrade and now an internal HD - how much does Sony plan on charging for this thing?

How much would you pay for something like this
-videogames
-movies
-music
-photo
-wireless
-50gb harddrive
-ms access

if they could put this out for less than $600 and increase the batterylife to something way beyond 15hrs in mp3 mode (more like 24hr in mp3 mode) then this could really take off

Yikes.  I would never buy something like this.  I'd much rather have seperate systems that play video games, movies, music, etc.  If I owned something like this, I'd be scared to leave a padded room for fear of breaking it.

Plus, can you imagine how big the PSP would be once you added a 50 gig HD?

For $600 you could buy a laptop. It might even be a little bit smaller than a PSP with all that stuff added on.

For $600 I could buy myself a 30 GB Ipod Photo, a decent portable DVD player, and a DS.

$600 was just an estimated guess

but would you really want to carry around all 3 items @ the same time?

how much do you think a 50gb PSP would cost (w/ all current options)?

I just checked on line and a 60gb iPod Photo cost $450 (30gb $350)has 15hrs of music life and 5hrs of photo life

A PSP has 8-10 music life, 2-5hrs video, ?hrs photo

now if (big IF) Sony can beat the iPod in batterylife, include a 50gb HD, keep the size (of the unit) similar, still all the features of the PSP (games included) do you really think $600 is too much to ask (considering you were willing to pay $450 for a 60gig iPod Photo)?

and on top of that, they'll expect you to buy a PS3 to play games on the PSP .. so you're looking at a solid $1,000 investment (after you buy games for both systems)

go sony! count me out!

kdr: i was referencing a rumor that the PSP and PS3 would excecise some element of connectivity, in that you could potentially run a ps3 game through the psp. i saw it on these boards some time ago, but it must be unfounded
