Title: Mario Kart DS!!
Post by: Bill Aurion on January 27, 2005, 01:26:54 PM
Every Mario Kart game should have two exclamation points after the name from now on...Oh well...
But anyways, Ninty showed off a nice little Mario Kart demo at their Euro DS conference with a nice simple 8-way wireless versus match, and boy has it progressed since last E3...To the point where I thought I was witnessing a new version of a console Mario Kart for a second...
The framerate looked spot-on, and the second screen employed the map of the course...However, any weapons fired could also be seen on the map which will add a bit more strategy to the mix...The traditional powerslide is back and you can once again hop (for those who missed doing so in Double Dash)...Of course, a lot of details were left out and I really doubt the game will be left without onrine when it's finally shipped...Oh, and the game has also been confirmed to ship everywhere in the world by the end of this year...
Wish List ~Return of the Boo item (which I think has been confirmed) ~Larger battle arenas a la Block Fort from MK64 ~At least 20 courses

Wow, it looks awesome, like Double Dash except with one person on the kart! 8 player wireless multiplayer is just.. awesome. Though seeing what weapons your opponents have might take away some of the intense randomness, but it should still be okay.
I hope it's online.

I'm a little iffy about this game. Double Dash wasn't as great as past Mario Karts. The track design just wasn't as hot and the battle mode was terrible. The two people per kart thing is the only thing that really saved it to me because that added a cool new team dynamic to the game.
This doesn't have the two people per kart so it has to rely on the track design. If Nintendo had trouble making decent tracks for the previous Mario Kart in theory they should have more problems with this one. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.
And this should be online. It would be such a waste to not include that feature. Without online support this is just like Mario Kart Yet Again.

The track design in Double Dash was awesome, it's just the battle arenas which were rather blah...

This is the best birthday present ever! Actually, not really, but this is still pretty awesome =p Plus onrine, and this will be the best Mario Kart ever

i read somewhere that maro kart ds track designs were taken from the SNES, N64, and GCN versions, plus new ones. wishfulthinking: downloadable new tracks.

God Ian, your pessimism is constantly taken to the next level with every post you make.
The game looks very very nice. I am very intrigued by the projectiles on the map thing. This adds importance to using the maps as you can in theory see bananas up ahead and turtles behind. I didn't notice any blue sparks... Thos will probably be added later though. It is very interesting that nintendo went completely away from the themed carts with this one. Kind of puzzles me because I thought they had a good thing going.

In previous screens there were different karts shown, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if there are kart unlockables...

the only thing i didn't like regarding tracks was that there weren't enough of them! Rainbow Road for it was much better than MK64 and my favorite course of all time is now DK Mountain. I really do hope they decide to make more than four cups. One of the things that made Mario Kart: SS great was the amount of different tracks. I was saddened by DD not having Lightning Cup but hopefully it will make a return in the DS version. Also hopefully they will have "Quick Run" which was also missing from DD. This is a handheld game so it would be an ideal feature.
So far the game is looking pretty solid. I hope it comes out earlier than the December 31, 2005 date (its either going to be earlier or delayed, probably). Still no touch-screen features, but I don't want them to implement one that doesn't work well, like Mr. Driller. Definitely looking forward to this game.

Of course the frame rate is awesome... in case you didn't know... the DS hardware has this little "quirk" that forces games to be 60 fps, unless the hardware is rendering full 3D in both screens at once, in which case it's 30 fps.
But anyway, I just thought of an great use for the touchscreen... You know how on the bottom screen it has a list of all 8 racers? Well you know how some items like red shells home in on people? Well how bout you pick who you shoot? Other than that, I'm guessing tapping the map will change map modes.. I've seen both an overall track view, and the zoomed in birds eye view of the action.... 8 player wireless, just as I though. Now all that this needs is wireless confirmation. Mario Kart on GBA was sweet. This looks to take the best of all previous games...this will be the ultimate mario kart...
EDIT: Oh and I really hope more Nintendo characters are available.. just for fun I wonder if exclusive items will be back. Either way, Diddy Kong must be in this game. I'd love some new surprises too, not just the "famous" Mario/DK people. Paper Mario 2 and SuperStar Saga had new characters...how bout some of them?

It's not like new games just fly out of Nintendo's butt....they've announced, what, 15 games? It usually takes at least a year to develop a good game, so I think the end of this year would be a fair release date.

Man. After looking at the horrible textures in NFS Underground and Asphalt, and looking at this game (look at the track textures!) it makes you want to cry... Aside from Hunters this is the best looking DS game... except unlike Hunters we KNOW it will rock. And we've actually seen the 8 player in motion... How bout the promised 16 player hunters deathmatch? (many developers have already said it's fairly easy to get 32 players).
