Title: I know we don't pay for this site, but... (Concerning Ads...)
Post by: UncleBob on January 23, 2005, 08:00:31 AM
Let me say, first off, I *love* the site and have for quite some time... It's one of two places that I rely on for my Nintendo news (The other being GameFAQ's boards, and that can be... questionable at times)...
And I'm very thankful we get all the stuff on this site for free! I understand the high costs of Internet Bandwidth and such - and thus I understand the need for ads to pay for all the great news and features we get here...
I hate these kinds of ads... Not the "Free stuff!" ads - while I'm no fan of those all over the place, I don't "hate" them. It's the big, flashy, "Let's give everyone seizures" types of ads that I hate...
It is my opinion that any ad of this style, I will *not* click on, even if they do offer to give me a free Gamecube for doing absolutly nothing. I hate these ads and I really wish they would just go away... PlanetGameCube should aim a little higher in the ads it allows to be placed on its site.
Please?

Yeah, that's pretty gross. Ironically, I haven't even seen it.
Seriously though, is that your phone number in your signature, or what?

Umm... yeah, it's my phone number, why?

I'm not sure it's prudent to post that on the internet
Psychos like myself might call it

Posting Phone Number On The Internet = Huge No No
Seriously, why would you do that? How lonely are you?
Haha, I kid I kid.
And yes, those ads are very, very annoying... I wish they wouldn't flash in your face like that!

Someone should sue ad companies for epileptic seizures. I mean, they tried it on Nintendo, why not on the real evildoers?

'eh, phone numbers are *real* easy to find anyway... I'm not too worried, I've had my phone number in my signatures on various message boards (including GameFAQs, if you can believe it) for years and have never had an issue come up...
I did once have the head of an international multimillion dollar company call me once... that was pretty cool. (And yes, I'm serious... and yes, I know 100% that it was him because I was good friends with some other people who worked at the company *and* this individual has a certian... I'd almost call it a lisp, but not so much....)
Anywhoo, I've made some good friends from it, so 'eh...

i can't believe you put your number on the internet and you're complaining about ads that just want information from you about where you live and stuff.

Ummm... the difference is that by posting my phone number, it doesn't make my eyes hurt.
By the way, can we drop the ads with the constant sound and go back to these flashing ads? They were less painful...

Ads? What ads?
Firefox + Adblock = Bliss.

Rick, if we block ads, does PGC still get money? I'm not exactly sure how it works--do we need to click on the ads to nab you some bucks, or is merely viewing the ad good enough?

Like he said above... Does PGC still get money if we don't see/click on the ads? I personally click on the occasional ad (usually the "Shoot the ..." ads, because they amuse me...) I don't want PGC to *not* get the ad revenure...

All I know for sure is that PGC is not getting the ad revenue from clicks. Perhaps Lik-Sang affiliate sales but no clicks.

I do the same thing. Usually, i click as far away from the target as possible, just to see if it tells me I won anyway. Sometimes it does, which I find really funny for some reason.

Adblock does that. Always has.
As for whether or not we get money if you don't see the ad, I can't divulge all the details, but I will say that it depends on the ad.

Yep, I know that one... And sometimes, I try to shoot the anti-target (Like the cop or what not) to try and yield the same result...

Rick, or anyone who uses adBlock.....
I know you probably don't want to answer stupid tech questions but,
AdBlock works great....blocks swfs just like you said, but how do you unblock them? I click on the adblock tab that appears over it and set up the filter. The flash goes away and all is fine...
When I view the blockable elements, the swf is red and italicized and I can't seem to unblock it... What am I missing?

Tools, Adblock, Preferences. Find the entry in the list, and remove it.
By the way, you can use WILDCARDS on the Preferences on the list as well, which can help you block entire domains, or even just common subdirectories. For example, one of my entries is "http"//*doubleclick*". Another one is "*banner*".

I thought it was ironic with all the PSP ads I see on this site.

Pale, flashblock works pretty well. It replaces all flash animations with an icon that you can click if you want the animation to play. I find it easier than blocking/un-blocking with adblock.

I use both AdBlock and FlashBlock. If you're a regular, it might be a good idea to block the large image with "where pcg readers go to bitch about everything" on it, so you can see most of the directories without having to scroll down.

I just switched myself. That paparazzi (sp?) ad--which is so annoying it should be illegal (except almost nothing is on the internet)--got me to switch. I'm a happy camper now. Thanks, Rick!

I wonder if banner ad companies will actually learn that there is a line that if crossed, people will actually take action. Seriously, now I will not see any ads from these sites, and only because they put annoying audio in their ads to make me notice their ad every time it pops up.

Just now I got totally fed up with that paparazzi ad and just switched to FireFox, adblock installed. That thing needed to die.

I just have ActiveX shut off all the time, unless I wanna visit a flash-only site.

There seems to be a nice Maxim + Blender subscription deal going on now for under $10!!!

Oh, My God, flashblock is wonderful, i was like this --><-- close to going back to IGN, it was about to be the lesser of two evils with that paparazzi ad, if you can even call it an ad...I mean, don't you have to sell something before you call it advertising?
I mean honestly I would think to myself, "well, I could go to PGC but I might get the paparazzi ad... I'd better not." This is how the internet should be run (i like number 6)

And here I am. I have no idea what ad you guys are talking about. I've been using Firefox/bird for years now, and have had the ads gone for a good amount of that time. I'm just glad I haven't had to "experience" this ad. So yeah, go Firefox.

For some reason, I've been using IE and Firefox for a long time now, yet the ads on this site merely don't appear.
