Title: DS Defect?
Post by: WuTangTurtle on November 22, 2004, 07:42:24 PM
Anyone else notice a pixel being red at all times? I think my DS touch screen is fried. It's very very small but it is very visible when u look near it.
Yesterday a guy came back into my store to exchange his due to this problem, and i just noticed mine do the same just a couple of hours ago. Let me know if u have had this problem too, and if anyone has any clues what i should do?
I may just exchange mine too.

Yeah, the GameFAQs board is lit up with dead pixel discussions. Mine has one on the upper screens, and I plan on replacing it. There's a report that Nintendo is going to be doing "advance replacements" in exchange for your credit card info where they ship you a new one, and you ship the defect back to them after you receive it. Beats waiting around for two weeks without a system, but I'll try the store first.

Yep... I'm one of the unlucky ones with *two* dead pixles... I may have to take advantage of the advance replacement program...
... but I've already gotten so attached to my DS...
Oh, btw... Hey Daniel! How's it going? PlanetGameCube rules!

I had that problem when I bought a GBA SP, I took it to the store with a receipt and they gave me a new one no problem.
Let this be a lesson to potential DS owners, KEEP the receipt.

omg, omg, i hope i still have my reciept, although i'm not sure if i have any dead pixels.

Play a game, its usually a tiny little spec thats white or red. It only shows up when you turn it on and no matter what its the same color. Try it with different games and see if its still there (and make sure to try to whipe it off, to make sure its not dust or something).
If it is and you dont have your reciept... well I would try the store anywho. Maybe try calling first? Though I would think that if its a store like Gamestop and maybe the guy remembers you, they would exchange it. If not contact Nintendo and they will ship you a replacement.

LCD manufacturers would tell you that that's the normal rate of dead pixels and to be expected. I guess they let QA slip a bit and allowed for a few dead pixels on their displays to meet their shipping volumes...

A small article on the problem by the lovable IGN.
Quote "With a small number of Nintendo DS screens, one or two dots on the screen may appear to be "stuck" on a particular color, such as white or red. This effect is caused when a particular pixel (the dots that make up the screen) is not working properly, even with the high quality standards set by LCD manufacturers. You will find this situation is common in many LCD devices, (PC monitors, televisions, cell phones, etc.).
It's important to understand that this issue will remain limited to the pixels you have already noticed. The problem will not get any worse and you should not expect to see the problem in any other areas of the screen.
We suggest that you use your system for a few weeks to determine whether this interferes with your enjoyment of game play. If, after using your system for awhile, you feel that this tiny dot is too distracting, the Nintendo DS does carry a one-year warranty. We are happy to inspect and, if necessary, fix your system at no charge within the warranty period."

It's so typical. I've always been fortunate in my LCD purchases, but it's common in everything from monitors to TVs to laptops.

no dead pixels yet.. but even if its 1 year later ill just bring it back to wal-mart without the reciept and get an exchange (they allow direct exchanges on ANYTHING even without the reciept. of course ill tell them i just bought it a week ago but lost the recipet
so this problem doesent really bother me.

I snuck a few minutes of Metroid gameplay(because I'm not allowed to until after exams) and I didn't notice any defects...I've had a flawless run with working hardware, so hopefully my DS will follow through...

Quote Yeah, the GameFAQs board is lit up with dead pixel discussions.
It's really quite hilarious to watch the PSP fanboys diving all over the issue, mocking DS owners, only to realize that they're still waiting for an even bigger screen that's also being made by Sharp.
Plus then there's the whole thing about Sony's customer service reputation, replacement of PS2s with DREs, shoddy workmanship, and all that other fun stuff.

Hilarious, why is Sharp making the screen for the PSP? That's like saying Nintendo using Sony UMD discs for its DS system.
DS (minor dead pixels) > PSP (disc drive errors and dead pixels)

I had one bad pixel(GREEN)right dead center, took the DS back to Target and exchanged it for the last one they had.Yesterday when I posted they had around 20.
New one is fine.

doesn't sony make screens as well?

Maybe not the actual display elements. Or they outsourced to increase their capacity as I would imagine the computer hardware department wouldn't like to take away from its capacities to make a loss-leader for the games department.

Has there ever been a dead pixel problem with the Game Boys? There was never such an outrage with them...

With the original Game Boys, we had some weird malfunction in older units, that, as the years went on, we'd actually get an entire STRIP of dead pixels along the side of the screen. Imagine just a pixel deep line going straight down, that's what we dealt with. (Like This)
REALLY unlucky ones had five or SIX pixel deep strips down the sides. Of course, this usually didn't happen unless the systems were really old and/or were really abused by their owners.

because sony makes their own lcd screens, seems kinda strange that sony would market sharp tvs as sony...

Nintendo doesn't own Sharp. Sharp makes LCD screens. They sell to anyone that wants to buy them. There's nothing unusual about that.

Yeah...Sharp makes 'em for Sony too.
Oh, and I spotted a dead pixel on my teacher's TI-83 today.

my ds does have a dead pixel, but i'm not worried. it's so small you can only really tell if you get pretty close to the screen

Well, my replacement DS is on the way. Gotta love Nintendo customer service. They send me a new one, and I can keep playing my defect until it gets here. Then I'll be able to play around with multiplayer before I send the old one back.
