Title: SSB DS and Zelda DS
Post by: Darkheart on November 08, 2004, 10:57:35 PM
Just thought id bring up that we could have a potential super smash game online on the ds, while some may disagree that its not true multiplayer because people wouldnt be in the same room, I believe it could work. People like me have Xbox friends who never want to go and play anything on a nintendo console ;_; and if i do get some kind of Super smash game on the ds i would like to have some way to play multiplayer with someone regardless if they are in the room or not, what do you guys think?
My second topic is since the Ds is kinda touching back to the n64 era and we got our first 3d zelda series there. Do you think we will get a 3d zelda and if we do, do you guys think it will be a port or a totally new zelda game?

Well I hope it's a new Zelda game, seeing as Nintendo has already ported every console Zelda game to the GCN, and in some instances, TWICE.

As Miyamoto said, he wants the player not to push a button to make Link pull a lever, he wants the player to actually pull a lever. It's unlikely that he doesn't want to make a Zelda game that uses the DS's featureset. Ports would be fairly redundant then.

i hope a new DS zelda game will feature 3D cell shaded graphics, maybe 3D Four Swords multiplayer in the WindWaker style

With the GBA and Cube we had a seperation between 2D and 3D. The Cube gets new 3D Zeldas (except Four Swords) and the GBA gets a new 2D Zelda. Since both 2D and 3D Zelda are significant I want to see both continue and the best way to do that is to keep the portable titles 2D. So I would prefer a new 2D Zelda on the DS. This same arguement can apply to the Metroid series as well which I'm a little worried about since the first Metroid DS game is 3D (and Metroid in name only).
Of course if they could make two Zelda games for the Revolution and two for the DS and each system got one 2D game and one 3D one that would be even better. I just want 2D Zelda to live and I'm afraid if Nintendo starts making 3D lever pulling games on the DS they might forget about it.

Oh come on...NST showed plenty of morphball usage in their presentation a while back...

From what I played in the demo it plays like a generic FPS. It might still turn out to be a good game but it plays virtually nothing like Metroid. It's like if one of the those ignorant individuals who dismissed Metroid Prime because it didn't control like Halo made their own Metroid game.

A decent first person shooter with touch screen is fine by me.

Personally, I don't think we need to worry about 2D Zelda disappearing, since the Four Swords concept seems to be very popular with Nintendo. Although I admit it might be a long time before we see another strictly one-player Zelda game in 2D. What Nintendo does with Zelda on the DS will probably depend on how they can make use of the stylus. I personally think it's easier to come up with 2D concepts that use the stylus, and considering how many 2D games Nintendo has shown so far, I'd say it agrees.

I think the 3D zeldas could use touch screens very well. Hell just the sheer potential for sword battling is pretty mind boggling.
Anywho we are going to have to accept that the DS will have somewhat skewed views of our favorite franchises. Whats the point of a console that is supposed to be innovative and different when it is just meant to be a means to bring more of the same? The DS will change some of the game concepts we know and love, but if we hang around we may find its for the best.

I hope you're not talking about Metroid. Because that is not the attitude toward a Metroid game. Metroid is not supposed to be a "decent shooter with a touch screen."

you're right. Its suppose to be a godly excellent shooter with a touch screen.

I think we will see the basic bare bones with Super Smash Brothers DS. We won't be getting internet connectivity. However, this isn't a bad thing, but a good thing. Nintendo knows the abilities and weaknesses of their own protocol for wireless play. They can push the limits of game design by not jumping to online play with Super Smash Brothers.
Here is what I would like to see:
1)8 player multiplayer matches/4 player Co-Op mode. 2)Expanded Adventure Mode. How about top down dungeon for the Link themed level? Or a race for the F-Zero themed game? Something interesting and fun. Then sprinkle alittle Co-Op magic and you have an amazing Adventure mode. 3)Custom Challenge creations. Pick the level, Opponent, victory circumstances, and Computer skill level. Then see if you or you and your friends can beat it. 4)Larger levels. With a pontential for 8 players to play verse mode, some of the levels need to be designed for such large masses. I would love levels that are larger and have more pitfalls in the middle to spice things up and set up traps.
Zelda is still going to be 2D with the multiplayer aspect. Nintendo has created 2 really fun games with this multiplayer angle, but they haven't hit a grand slam with the game design yet. I fully expect for this game to really push the limits of the 2D Co-Op Verse gameplay design that has made the Zelda franchise fun.
I also suspect this will be one of those most own games that will push DS sales, and the experience will definately be worth it.

i love the 2d style of zelda. but i just like 3d better. my idea is for the cell-shaded art style seen in windwaker and fourswords adventures, stay with the portable. i was thinking of like say. having the normal third person view on the top screen, and when you select something from a menu on the touch screen, say grappling hook, the bottom screen changes to the first person aiming view, while the top screen stays third person, might be a cool little effect. i love zelda ::swoons::

Sadly, the DS probably is not powerful enough for such a 2-screen 3D view, norebonomis. But yeah, that's the sort of thing I'd like to see with the DS: more multi-angles, less map+normal angle. Perhaps with experience and/or an old-school style processing chip in the GBA slot we will see that.

I remember Nintendo saying they didn't make the N64 Zeldas cel shaded because the hardware wasn't up to it, it's probably the same with the DS. A 3D Four Swords Zelda could be interesting...

The DS can do cel-shading, I believe...

I think a 3D four swords would work great on the DS! The top screen could have Zelda WW esque graphics (maybe cel shading cant be done, but certainly cartoony graphics can) and the same thing only in a 2D zelda style view on the bottom screen. That way you could see what your doing AND see what all the other players are doing (and your general surroundings. Plus it could make for interesting puzzles, maybe you can see a detail in the 3D view that you cant in the 2D view. Maybe youll have to be looking at the 2D view to avoid traps in certain areas but the your controlling the 3D view (making it kind of tricky). Could be interesting.

The DS was explicitly said to use celshading, probably Nintendo's patented algorythm (I could dig up the patent number but don't feel like it).

Was cel-shading even possible then? Didn't the technique first appear in Jet Grind Radio which came out well after Ocarina of Time? Do you have a link of Nintendo saying that?

Nah sorry, I don't have a link, but I do remember it being said by either Miyamoto or another person from the Zelda team. I think the exact quote was something about them not being able to create the living breathing world they envisioned in the N64 ones, but the GC made it possible.. or something. But now they've done a complete 180 with the new Zelda and I can't say I approve of it....

Ah. That's slightly different since it doesn't specify cel shading.
