Title: A first for an arcade game?
Post by: joeamis on September 02, 2004, 08:17:12 PM
Tekken 5 will be coming to US arcades next month. And in what I think could be a first for an arcade game, you will be able to use a PS2 controller instead if you want, by simply connecting it to the game. Good to see some faint life left in the arcade business. Personally, I think arcades should feature online play with other arcades and/or home consoles. Or that less games should be featured, and the games that are featured should be more like a lan party in a sense that 10 people or so could all compete against each other in the same arcade game, and have team based game types as well (2v2,3v3,4v4,5v5, or uneven matches). Including weekly stat tracking and overall leaderboards.
Another more radical idea, would be to offer a console game in a special version, that cost perhaps 10 dollars more but allowed you free play of the game at the arcade which features the same game. It could be regulated by 10 minute optimum play time intervals or more/less (depending on the type of game) and ofcourse still offer play to people who didn't buy the console version at a regular arcade cost for the game.
Or another option for those who bought the special console version could be that the game cost you only 25 cents each play, with unlimited play, instead of 75 cents or a dollar. Or 5 cents for 25 cent games and 10 cents for 50 cent games. Whatever the case, something needs to be done to make arcades viable again, less we never see them again =(.

What weirdo would want to use the PS2 controller over an arcade joystick? Maybe my personal hatred of the Playstation controller is clouding my opinion but I've never had any desire to use ANY controller over a joystick for fighters. I view controllers as a necessary evil for playing arcade-to-home conversions.

I would prefer the ps2 controller myself, and even more so because most of my Tekken experience is with home versions. Namco also has tournaments lined up for the arcade game, both regional, and later a national tournament. I think some people who also have more Tekken experience at home rather than arcades (if any at all) will also relish in using their ps2 controller instead. And given the tournament, this will let the best home version Tekken players a fighting chance against the arcade honed players. Overall I think it will help too, offering another option of play that makes the game appealing to more of a demographic will only help get more people playing it.

I understand how it would be helpful in tournaments and things like that, but will anyone else really take advantage of this? I mean, i doubt someone is going to be in an arcade and say something like, "Oh, they have Tekken 5, good thing i brought my PS2 contoller in my back pocket."

I'd rather have a port to a hardware I own instead of such pointless functionality.

I'm pretty sure our arcade is getting it shipped out to us the first day it's out. I'll let you know how it goes.
What I've seen being a huge success is games where you can continue any sort of progress - SC2 Conquest, Gauntlet, and now Initial D. I mean, HUGE success - we have about 50 machines (that's counting ticket games) and last collection, Initial D brought in OVER TEN PERCENT of the TOTAL income. People play it the entire day, one after another. Also, it's an awesome game, too.

I like that the arcade allows for experiences that I can't get at home without some peripherals that would probably cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. There are a couple of motion-sensing arcade games at my sports bar that I played lately, and they were a lot of fun! The most unique experience I had in gaming since Super Mario 64. Very intuitive and immersive.

No, but there's going to be people who say, "good to see some new ideas being implemented in arcades". And, "hey I could have a chance in the tournament using my PS2 controller!" And, "cool I'm so used to Tekken on my PS2, now I can play the brand new one before it releases (the way he wants to, and to see how it will play on PS2)". And "hehe I can actually have a chance versus the arcade players now."
