General Gaming / Re: What is your most recent gaming purchase?
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:42:44 AM »
I picked up Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate  on a digital sale some time ago.  Starting over and getting back into it seems so daunting, but I could be persuaded to pick it up again, too.

I did purchase Valiant Hearts on Steam, and I can't wait to play it.  I love history and the time period around World War I, as sad as it is.  Since both this and Child of Light were both made using the same engine, I have to wonder why Ubi chose to release Child of Light on the Wii U but not Valiant Hearts.

I'd honestly be far more interested in this if it were NES Remix Maker.

I wouldn't say that I'm excited about TMNT, but that trailer did probably push me from the position of "meh" to "I actually might go watch this."

...aside from Link, I mean.

I generally don't mind new characters, but for a game that is largely being sold on fan service, it just seem strange that they would go the route of not using existing characters.  I would've preferred another non-human character like a Goron, Zora or even a Rito.

It is interesting to note that all of the other known playable characters are female.

Odd choices for new playable characters.  It's not as if there aren't a number of existing characters that could be adapted as playable (particularly in Twilight Princess), so why would the developers feel that they need to make up a new one?

TalkBack / Re: E3 2014 Sonic Boom Interview with Bob Rafei
« on: June 24, 2014, 10:00:37 AM »
Good interview.  I just wish the buzz around the Wii U demo was more promising.  Maybe they have time to fix some of the issues that people have had with the game e.g. the framerate, but it seems like some of them (the slow pacing) are deliberate design choices.   I'm not really a Sonic fan, but I bet my kids would enjoy this game a lot if it turned out well.

Reader Reviews / Re: Ittle Dew brutally honest review

Nice!  I had been thinking about giving this one a try, but I'll probably refrain because of the lack of audio streaming to the gamepad.   This annoyed me about Gianna Sisters, and I'm sure that it will annoy me here as well.

TalkBack / Re: Is Open World Enough for Zelda?
« on: June 23, 2014, 12:31:50 PM »
I remember that when I was a child, based on what I read in the manual in the first Legend of Zelda, they always indicated that there was an Overworld and an Underworld.   The underworld was described as an "underground maze of labyrinths."   (This idea was probably reinforced in my head by the horrible Zelda cartoon in the 80s/90s as well as the Valiant comics.)   Before I started playing the game, I had imagined that the two areas would be somewhat equal in size and prominence; of course, as much as I enjoyed the game, the promise of this idea didn't turn out that way in practice.

I, too, wonder about how this open world idea for Zelda will manifest itself.   Since Zelda games often play with the idea of dual worlds, I wouldn't mind seeing something more akin to Metroid Prime, where an open-world Overworld is riddled with a number of caves and entrances to an equally significant Underworld.  Or maybe it could be more like a  a Shadow of the Colossus type set-up where you can more or less tackle objectives in any order you wish, only with a populated world and more environmental-based puzzles.

Sounds awesome.  I didn't know that there was a  town, dialogue or any exploration elements at all in this game; I had assumed it was mostly platforming.   So is this game actually story-driven?

That's encouraging.  I was suckered in by Reggie's statements about wearing his Metroid Pin.

Whatever they do, I'd like them to propel the character and the series forward for a change.  I don't want them to keep looking backwards and inserting new games that took place before Super Metroid.   I don't even mind them giving Samus more personality like they tried to do in Other M; it was just that the execution behind that game that was flawed.

I also wouldn't mind Nintendo either doing a 2D Zero-style remake of Metroid 2: Return of Samus or even farming out a that out to a studio like Wayforward.

Honestly, if there had been an actual demo of the game there, I probably would have picked Starfox because I just love Starfox.   Otherwise, it's difficult for me to pick anything other than Super Smash Brothers Wii U.   Splatoon would come in at a close second for me because I'm excited about the multiplayer possibilities, and this is a direction in which I would like to see Nintendo continue to go.

For 3DS, I'd have to go with Project Steam because I love tactical games.  The initial comparisons to Valkyria Chronicles interests me because I've always wanted to play those games but never owned a system on which they were available.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Where is the Mario kart NWR Community?

I'm still playing, though I usually have to save my online karting until late at night (like between 10:30 - 12:00 CST).  I can't get my wife and kids interested in playing online matches, so we're usually doing the local multiplayer thing earlier in the evening.  My NNID is Sundoulos, so feel free to add me to your friends list if you like.

TalkBack / Re: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker E3 Hands-on Preview
« on: June 17, 2014, 01:09:41 PM »
I wonder if Captain Toad's abilities and moveset will remain pretty standard throughout the entire game or if they will introduce new abilities, enemies and environments.   DKC Tropical Freeze did a great job of keeping it's environments and level gameplay varied and fresh.  If they can achieve that to some degree here, I can see it being worth a retail release; an entire game consisting of the same thing over and over again would get stale very quickly.  I hope we see more of this soon in an upcoming Nintendo Direct.

With regard to Palutena, I think it's awesome that more female characters are present in Smash Brothers as well; I still think it's a shame that the developers seem to have passed on the opportunity to put Lucina from FE: Awakening.  Maybe she could be an alternate costume for Marth?

Hopefully this game looks much better in motion.  The screenshots of this on Nintendo's facebook page are decidedly bland-looking.   In theory, I like the theme and the ideas; since I really like turn based strategy, I'm on board with this enough to keep an eye on it.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Looks to Get More Kids, Girls on 3DS
« on: June 11, 2014, 10:12:47 PM »
Nintendo has their work cut out for them.  I have three children now, and my two oldest are six and three.  I've found that for some reason, they seem intimidated by a lot of the games I've played on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS...it mostly seems to be because of the buttons.   They'll sit and play Plants vs. Zombies all day, though.

47
I played all three games last year on the iOS version of the game, Ace Attorney HD; the screen shots here look similar to that version.  The extra mission from the DS version was present in that version, so I would think that this version would also feature it.

It's been covered extensively on the Connectivity and RFN podcasts, but if you've never played these games (especially the first and third) are a great bit of gaming history and are well worth the time investment.   I wanted to try them out before Dual Destinies came out last year, and I'm glad I did.

"In an interview with Time Magazine, which was quickly pulled [...]"

Not so fast, Star Fox...

I can understand not pouring the resources into developing new games for the Wii U, but it would seem like a waste for them to at least not put a finished game out at least as a digital release.

50
Agreed.  This is pretty fantastic.
