I like rock, and movie scores.
I only really listen to rap if it's just good enought that I can stand it, and it's got a good tune.
I can, however, listen to it in the car (or my friend's car), since turning up the volume to max, and the bass to overload is what rap is all about.

*in best Dr Evil accent*
Is that rap? Or is that RnB?
I don't know genres.

all depends, if the music is good them I can usually go along with the song, but for the most part 90% I have heard I don't like, but occasionally something comes along that strikes me right on the fancy ear drum.  I am also very ecletic(sp?) in my music tastes.  if it sounds good then I like it, regardless what genre it belongs to. I don't discriminate against music, (or anything else for that matter either).

I hope I don't double post.  This computer is so screwy. . .

I like a wide variety of music, and while rap is not my favorite genre by far, it's not bad.  There are some songs that make my ears burn when I hear them, and there are some that I like a lot.  So it depends.

Why exactly do you " loathe " eminem? ( by the way i have never heard of the word " loathe" before ) I actually wrote a controversial essay on Eminem about how people see him as some dirtbag who tries to corrupt little kids. I got my teacher to look the other way about him. He's not bad and i hate when people are always criticizing him based upon what they hear in his songs. Please dont reply to this with some flame sh!t on how he sucks or something like that. These are just my thoughts. Later.

Eminem used to be good, and he could probably be good again if his whole life turned to **** again so he actually has something to rap about.

Dr. Dre is never gonna release another album.... detox.... right.

Tupac has a new song out with Keisha Cole

Coolio..... lol

DMX.... all but done.

Busta Rhymes just aint what he used to be. The dreads is where he drew his power, he should have never shaved them.

I was also a fan of Notorious B.I.G., but I can't stand Sean "P. Puff Diddy Daddy" Combs.

But a hot new artist on the scene is Drake. You should check out his new album.

While Relapse isn't as sharp as his first two LP's, he's still good and head and shoulders above the rest of the field.  Its funny to look back at those stupid enough to challenge him and how quickly fell into obscuty after he battled back.

RIP  -> ICP, Everlast, Cannabis, Ja-Rule, Fred Durst, Benzino, Jamaine Dupree....

And now Mariah and Nicky, Nick is definately done now, but Mariah should may able to crawl her way out.  Still though, my favorite diss is his second response to FortyandWhite.

Nick Cannon isn't a rapper and if he ever had a career in music it was over long before it started. Mariah will be just fine.

Eminem has been a shell of his former self ever since he decided to shove D12 down Americas throat only to watch us all laugh and walk away. Eminem doesn't hold the career ruining clout that he did several albums ago.

Even though isn't isn't as sharp as he once was, his average is still fantastic, people are just used to it.  Name one rapper who's defeated him in battle.  Until that happens, he's still the king of hip hop.  Jay z, Nas, Lupe, Fitty, and Kanye all know better than to attempt.  It'd backfire worse than "The Takeover" did.

It is a brute fact that all bands/musicians slowly degrade over time.  Heard the new Beastie Boys, or Metallica?  From Led Zepplin to 2pac, everyone devolves.  But the great ones, still retain some of that magic, like those just mentioned and Eminem.  Especially in hip hop, people are lucky to stick around 2 weeks.  How many great albums did Snoop have?  One.

His new stuff is also vastly different musically.  Props to him for trying something new rather than recycling the same album.

talk about a necromancer! That was what I liked in 2003. Actually. i think my tastes have changed in the last 6 years, while I may still have those people on my playlist I always skip them. I will listen to some Biz Marquee every time though. I like more soothing music now. I like Squirrel Nut Zippers a lot, Panic at the Disco, Ludo, Beatles. Rap sounds pretty archaic too me, i sort of wish it would go away and be replaced by something new. I have listened to rap recently with a Cockney accent from "The Streets" and that still was pretty good. D average is totally on the money about band/musician degradation, but I'd extend it to genre degradation as well, but thats a much more slow thing.

Rap as a whole right now is pretty much crap, with just a few shining through.

Kanye is good at what he does, but he need to shut his mouth if he's not in the studio or at his own concert.
Regardless of what JayZ says, he in not the King of Rap unless you are talking about money made.

I say that my CD changer is in desperate need of anything new to me is because I can't stand the radio and the crap that they pass off as music 90% of the time.  There are just too many people talking about nothing for 4 minutes with a slightly catchy hook and knockin beat. I know hte radio has to work with what they are given, but there is just so mach crap to filter through to get to the decent stuff, that I just avoid the radio until I can't listen to the radio anymore.

Now having said that, someone recommend me something other than Wale that isn't degraded in value and style like Eminem. Seriously Eminem seemed like he was bored with rap and only made the last album I heard from him because he knew that it would get radio play and would sell millions. He even said his song was about nothing in the song and that they would still play it on the radio.... which is where i first heard it.
give me a break. He's not trying because he doesn't have to. He is at his best when he has something to rap about, and he seem to only have something to rap abut when his love life is in shambles.

Aha, i did list 2 emo-ish bands, i think they have talent though. Upon further examination it looks like Panic! is pretty much done for with 2 members leaving in July. I didn't mind their Beatles Tribute era one bit :P, Also, now it looks like theres a new band to like.  The Young Veins, but maybe they sound too much like the Beatles.

One type of emo did die (the "pop punk" kind; Hawthorne Heights, My Chemicle Romance and other garbage like that), now its a bunch of fake metal bands that call themselves "screamo" or "power-pop" bands like Hellogoodbye and Panic At The Disco. *shutters*

There is no excuses or amount of apologies that will make up for what he did. I disagree with lots of awards given out at award shows, but thats the nature of award shows. They aren't created to cater to my taste nad I don't remember anybody asking for Kanye to express his opinion. I'm not sure what made him think he had the right, even if it wasn't for his usual selfish reasons. That was Taylor Swifts moment and even though Beyonce gave her a second chance to at her moment, she still can have "that" moment back.

He could have easily won his own award and made that comment or simply walked over to Beyonce how was right in the front row and told her that himself, although he should have just waited till after the show.

Us in Psychology Academia were quite unsure what to make of Kanye West's stage disruption.  On the one hand it was a racial minority snatching the power from a racial majority.  But then again it was also a man expressing dominion over a woman.

When it came up in class (routinely) I said that I certainly hoped that Beyonce and Kanye were like... "together" and he was being stupidly romantic, because otherwise the only other explanations are him being drunk, racist, or both.

Not that I'm much into music, but events like this can have special insight into American culture and sociopolitical trends.

I don't think Kanye is a racist, but i bet he has his moments. He looked like he was going to cry on Jay Leno. His Ego is way too big, even in a room filled with celebrities, he acts like the most important person there. Some would attribute it to his youth an immaturity, but the man is 32!

Personally I think all it says is that Kanye is a drunk self centered asshole who if invited to the next awards show should be sitting about 8-10 rows back and somewhere in the middle of the row.

This isn't the first time he pulled this stunt, it's just the first time he did it for a video or song that wasn't his.

actually, now that i've actually watched the videos. Kanye didn't say her video was better, he said Beyonce's video was still one of the greatest of all time. Watching both videos I have to say, the Taylor Swift video sucks. The Beyonce one is quite generic though, but man does she work it. Maybe Kanye was right, **** it.

That's not really the point.  If we let everybody who disagreed with an awards decision crash the acceptance speech, nobody would ever get to even say "thank you."  Sure, it doesn't matter, but that's more to the point.  It really doesn't matter, not enough to crash the stage.

At first I was like "oh no he didn't!" but now after thinkng about the situation its more like ****, who cares, what a meaningless awards show anyway. The VMAs suck, I have no respect for it. So if Kanye disrespects it than it doesn't matter to me. Although, Kanye is still a egomaniac.

If you were an up an coming musician being recognized on one of the biggest platforms for world wide recognition for the very first time, I think you might be a little tramatized.

What Kanye did was not called for. Beyonce still won the award for Best Video so his whole outburst was not needed and his opinion on the matter would have been better suited for a post show interview. He might have let the liquor get the best of him, but this is the 3rd time he acted out like this, so there really is no excuse.

This isn't the first time Kanye has done this at an awards show.  That is what is so sad.  He's run out of idea's.  I don't respect him any less though, it was pretty funny, and made an unwatchable event, suddenly watchable, well, for about 30 seconds.  Kind of pathetic how all the celebrities took it so seriously and starting twattering their anger on twitter.

I do admire Kanye's ambition.  With the lil bit of talent he has, he has really over achieved.  He can't really sing, his dancing is just ok, and his rapping, well, he stole it from Nas, minus the wit.

Taylor swift is nothing special, but thats besides the point.
Kanye did wrong, he knows he did wrong and Jay Leno threw it in his face last night.

Kanye grabbed his jacket and left the studio with out even performing. I don't think Jay wanted him to stay any longer than he did, and Kanye didn't want to stay any longer, so it all worked out.

Yeah I hate twitter.  The only constructive truth it has brought is that it brings celebrities' lives down to their plebeian fans' level.  It really demystifies the whole thing when they keep twittering about their kids and about how their kids are eating at McDonald's in 8:07 AM and how they're about to go to the gym and how they are on the gym's bicycles now.  Nobody cares.  Nobody cares that you've spawned a brat, and nobody wants to see pictures of him (nobody morally intact, anyway.)  Nobody wants to see goofy pictures of you staring into the camera like a fat-faced moron, like you're some nobody. You're a celebrity!  Let the nobodies of the world fill their twitter pages ups with fuzzy pictures of car windows and random crap.  You're supposed to be the productive members of entertainment.  Produce!

Twitter only ever helped two things.  Criminals like pedophiles and thieves who know exactly where your children are and when your house is empty, and Iranian election protesters, because they couldn't use the actual internet.  So unless your society is falling apart through anomie, twitter is useless.

^POTY? It'll get my vote thats for sure. Lets just hope Kanye West doesn't google his name and find it here, signs up and trolls the ceremony thread.

Has anyone pointed out that this Taylor Swift person is only 17? I've never even heard the name before this incident started doing its rounds on the news media, but now I'm just being bombarded with it. Sure the VMA's don't matter for **** but the fact that Kanye took that moment away from a little kid just makes him a fucking bully at this point. That's really just low.. Like someone else said, he's already overachieved enough, yet he's such an egomaniac he couldn't even let this little girl have her moment in the spot light, and as far as I know it was probably her first big moment too. And before someone mentions that Beyonce gave her a second chance, like someone else posted earlier (yesterday) she'll still never have that moment back. On top of that, after seeing the footage.. Beyonce came off as just trying to look good in the public eye instead of being sincere and letting lil miss Swift have her moment. If she really cared she shoulda called Kanye an asshole, but then she'd probably lose out on ever working with the guy and winning more awards and praise cuz she's probably just as big an egomaniac as he is, but knows how to hide it.

In the end though, NONE OF THIS MATTERS AND I'M SICK OF HEARING/TALKING ABOUT IT.

The problem is that most people have no idea who she is. Her plan backfired because no one but the people on twitter are talking about it.
Maybe she should have grabbed the grabbed the mic from Jay and said "New York is Jockin Cuz My Lip Gloss is Poppin" at then people would have recognized her and someone would have brought it up in a media outlet that matters.

I think my re-title helps to understand the metaphor. (assuming there was one)

Spike Jonze is the man.

Drake is the future, his lyrics are crazy.

Kanye is the best producer out there in terms of quality and consistency, and he also has nice lyrics too.  But I think he's bored with the game, and really wants to do something else.  His last album moved into the "I'm so bored, I just want to do something really off-the-wall to see if I can make people like it" territory.

Jay-Z is like the Sinatra of rap to me (a legend, consistently quality material, trailblazer in terms of what a mere "rapper" can be), but he'll always be in the shadow of Notorious B.I.G. in my eyes.  Biggie could do any style and make it both believable and entertaining.  Jay-Z is top-tier but doesn't quite have the charisma of Biggie.  He's more business, less gutter.  He's more notable for his longetivity than anything else, which is undoubtedly remarkable.  He's never had a bad album, either.

Eminem can destroy anybody lyrically.  I think, like Kanye, he's so good that he's bored.  Nobody comes after him any more because they know he'll wipe them off the map.  Take a listen to his diss track aimed at Mariah and Nick Cannon (especially Nick Cannon, my word Em tears that boy apart) if you don't believe me.

Mos Def is also a lyrical genius.  His musical choices leave a lot to be desired (I would say the same thing about Nas, that guy has some of the best lyrics but worst beats on his albums), but listen to stuff like "Mathematics" and "Champion's Requiem" and you can't deny he's one of the best out there.

Nas killed it with Illmatic - arguably my favorite album ever - but everything since then has been mediocre to terrible.  He's the classic guy that has three killer tracks on each album and then 15 other tracks that are straight garbage.

I've always been a fan of the Wu.  Liquid Swords, that's all I really have to say.  I really want to check out Only Built for Cuban Linx 2, as well.  Triumph is also sick, and you know, 36 Chambers.

I'm not a Lil' Wayne fan.  I don't hate the guy but I've never seen what qualifies him as "The Best Rapper Alive".  Everybody raves about how he doesn't write raps and freestyles everything, but my problem is that you can TELL he's dropping stuff off the dome.  It's impressive, but some of his raps are terrible.  His raps SOUND like freestyles.  Jay-Z doesn't write anything either (neither did Biggie), and you can't even tell.  I still don't believe it, but watch Fade to Black and Mike D. from the Beastie Boys is there with his jaw on the floor, raving to Rick Rubin that Jay doesn't write anything and just goes in the booth and drops it.  He couldn't believe it.

Yeah, I listen to a little rap.

Well, not so much freestyle as he did make them up in the booth.  In other words, he never wrote anything down.  He would apparently sit there in the studio and create the rhymes on the spot, and practice them in his head until he had a whole song created.  Jay-Z does the same thing.  Jay-Z has said it's like a mental exercise, and the more you do it, the better you get at it.

That makes sense.  I know people that will sort of freestyle over beats just to get a sort of melody down, then fill the words from there.

While Jay Z has gotten better, his rhymes remind me of a guy freestylin who never really gets to the punchline.  Listening to him and Em on Renegade is like night and day, while Jay is talking about going to the store to buy something to "quiet stomach rumblings' Em is painting pictures of going to war w/ the Mormons while being drowned to death during baptism.  Dude is a random insane lyrical genius.  Like Kanye, I respect J more for his producing than his rhyming.  Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life was a masterpiece of beats back in the day.

I like Pac's for his rhymes and Biggie for his beats, though I wish Biggie had more tracks like Dead Wrong, too much RnB like crap through his career.  As far as disses, 2pac definitely had the upper hand there w/ Hit em Up:

"Grab your glocks when you see 2pac
Call the cops when you see 2pac, uh
Who shot me,
But your punks didn't finish
Now you 'bout to feel the wrath of a menace
$$$$, I hit 'em up"

Nothing like mocking people after they tried to shoot you.  A lyrical teabaggin indeed.

I like songs about blue flowers, sunshine in a bag, suburban american, and things that are dynamic in the evening air. Oh, I also like songs about ghost stories of people murdered on deserted islands.  Songs about religion are coo too, they make me giggle.

So what you guys think of Forever?  Usually, when a bunch of big artists come together on a track, its a mess, but this turned out pretty dope, love the main beat.  4 different verses with 4 very different styles.  And Daaaaaaaaamn.  Looks like Em is fully recovered from his detox.  Dude is on his game now.  If I had to rate the artists on this song I'd go:
Em
Drake
Kanye
Lil Wayne

So now that Recovery has been out a week, how would you guys rate it?  I'd give it 4/5.  Considering how meh Relapse was, I'm very impressed he pulled himself back together so quickly.  My only complaint is I think he's too sober now.  His rhymes are missing those weird tangents the green stuff used to inspire him to do.  Either way though, I'm loving it.  My favorite tracks are No Love, Not Afraid, Almost Famous and the intro/outro tracks.  Hopefully, this album is just a one time thing, in terms of being optimistic and talking about sobriety and his next album is even better.  If so, he'll be one of the few legends to hit rock bottom and actually climb back to the top.  In terms of its place in his catalog, I'd rate them like this:

Marshall Mathers LP
Slim Shady LP
8 Mile Sountrack
Infinite
Eminem Show
Recovery
Encore
Relapse

Thoughts?  And any idea what the next single will be?  I think No Love is a sure hit, it'd obviously make a great video w/ weezy n em bobbing their head night of the roxbury style and that verse em spits is just sick.

Oh, and isn't it sad that Eminem is the only one in the mainstream media to call out Rothlisburger for what he really is? (See the first line to Almost Famous).

I liked Eminem a couple of years ago, and his older stuff is still good. His new stuff isn't anything special. The less commercial his work, the better it seems for me.

Who's heard Wale's new mixtape? Instant classic. The  Seinfeld quotes are better integrated in to the songs and he does some realy good spoken word.

Also, a local artist round my way also has a mixtape that I think you should check. You can peep it here.

Girl Talk is a popular mash up DJ. He doesn't create anything himself. Instead, he mixes samples with beats from different genres. I don't listen to him often but I know people that do. He's not really a hip-hop/rap dj, the truest sense.

He did do a kick ass show in conjunction with vicky's secret at my college last year though. But I can tell you his music was the last thing on my mind.

Big release day in hip-hop. Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and (to a lessor extent) Curren$y all put out albums today.

I've bought and listened to them all. Nicki was surprisingly better than I expected. Pilot Talk II was exactly as I expected. And I gotta admit I loved Kanye's new album. The tracks that were previously released were re-produced and are (mostly) better.

Anyone else give these a listen?

I like Kanyes, but I'm not loving it... yet. It took a while for 808's to grow on me, and now I love that album, so I'll give it more time. Runaway has been growing on me though.

Cee Lo's is exactly like I expected it to be, 1 or 2 songs I love and the rest were obviously not made for me. I seriously end up tuning out about 4-5 songs in a row before I realize that I wasn't listening anymore. I alway sfeel bad and go to replay the songs only to do it again... and again.

I'm no fan of Nicki's but her album, or what I've heard of it so far, is actually not bad. I like it so far. She continues to deliver and she is slowly growing on me.

But it's not just her style though, she actually sounds exactly like an old skool Lil Kim in atleast 1 or 2 of her tracks.
If someone where to randomly play one of those tracks and I wasn't aware that it was from the new Nicki Minaj, I might have thought it was Lil Kim rappin purely by the sound of her voice.

Cee Lo's album was beyond amazing. Easily one of the best 3 this year (the other two is Rick Ross and Janelle Monae), simply because he can SING. Puts people like Chris Brown to shame really; a fat black guy sings better than a shapely dude 10 years his junior.

I skipped over Nicki's album because i cannot tolerate her faux-english accent (GET STEPHEN FRY) and her singles post-mixtape were all aimed at a segment of people to emulate her against Drake. Drake is enough for me, i don't need another.

Kid Cudi  - Pursuit of Happiness
                 Day 'n' Night

Lupe Fiasco - Kick Push

Sage Francis - Crack Pipes
                       Broken Wings

And regarding Eminem, while I've enjoyed his music on occasion, the only album of his I can listen to on repeat is Infinite.

Um, if you're looking for excitement and intensity, then you're gonna want to look elsewhere. Depending on how much you've listened to him previously, there will be a couple tracks you've heard before. J. Cole is a lyricist at heart, and most of his songs are slowed down to help him articulate his thoughts. Word play is good. No club bangers to speak of. Still a good album, but it could be a matter of taste.

I never did get into J Cole, but did accidentally stumble onto Phonte and i'm glad i did. Unlike many around him (even Drake, who seems to have developed himself off Phonte), he raps with clarity ad sings really well and talks about topics that are quite humble - his 2018 album he spoke about the death of his father, trying to lose weight and getting married.

It's sad how he hasn't blown up compared to other - less talented and versatile - rappers, but his output has been nothing short of fantastic.

Yes! No News is Good News is a classic! If you don't know Little Brother, that was a rap duo he was in some time ago and they got back together for an album last year.  Check it out if you haven't!

Phonte specializes in what I call "grown man raps".  He's similar to Black Thought, but with less intensity.

Speaking of Black Thought, please check out Streams of Thought vol 1 & 2, if you haven't!

I really need to try the Little Brother album. I've been listening to the Pacific Time EP quite a lot lately.

This aint about Hip Hop or Rap, but about Indie Music and I didn't want to look for a make a general music thread.....

I don't know who knows what Bandcamp is, but they apparently provide a place for the indie music producers to sell their stuff online.

Well, it appears that in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic, they have decided to waive all fees and send all proceeds directly to said artist this Friday.

So if you have a favorite band, and you've been meaning to purchase some of their albums, now would be a good time to do so and either save a little money or have the artist get all the proceeds instead of a slice going to the distributor.

So i finally did listen to May The Lord Watch. I quite enjoyed it. But the surprise for 2020 is Lyric Jones' Closer Than They Appear. It's easily my favourite album of 2020.

It's ludicrously short at 22 minutes long for an album, but the album flows together so beautifully that you dont even realise its finished. Phonte is the exec producer and it kinda shows due to how well the tracks flow together.

It takes everything that made Little Brother good and distilled it down even further. Amazing.
