WayForward's cult classic is finally arriving on Virtual Console this June!

Shantae, the Game Boy Color game featuring a spunky young half-genie on a quest to retrieve a stolen steam engine from the notorious pirate Risky Boots, is heading to the Nintendo 3DS eShop towards the end of June this year.

The news was posted on WayForward's official blog, stating that the release is confirmed not only for North America, but for the first time the game has been seen in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

The game was originally released in June back in 2002, and has become such a rare cult classic that copies of the cartridge often sell for several hundred dollars online.

Lol, kinda old news. Well, I guess the part about Europe and Australia is new. Matt Bozon confirmed on Twitter like 2 weeks ago that it was coming out on the Virtual Console in late June or early July, I even mentioned it on the forms.

They've been talking about this for years, so it's great to finally see a true confirmation. I was disappointed by the DSiWare sequel, but most people seem to think the GBC original is better anyway. For $5, I'm definitely going to try it.

At this point, any Gameboy games for 3DS VC are welcome, but particularly so if they're games that I haven't played before. I'm looking forward to giving this a shot.

Once upon a time, I held this game in my hands at the store. I was trying to determine weather or not I wanted this or Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.

Especially so because I rented it from Blockbuster and I KNEW how good it was. I put it off, though and bought Harmony of Dissonance thinking I could just go back and get Shantae later. of course, I didn't realize that this game I used to LOVE renting could become the Radiant Silvergun or Panic Restaurant of my collection. JUst like I stupidly let one of my friends borrow my copy of Clay Fighter: Sculptor's Cut that I got from Blockbuster on the cheap and he pawned it off. T___T

Man, now I'm depressed. Depressed until I get to play the game that got me started on my original genie obsession on real Nintendo hardware for the first time in 11 years.
