Nintendo Announces Big Nintendogs Sales
« on: September 01, 2005, 04:57:39 AM »
250,000 puppies homed in the first week. Oh, and Advance Wars is not doing too badly either...

VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY GOES TO THE DOGS – LITERALLY

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 1, 2005 – With sales of a quarter of a million units in its first week of availability, Nintendogs™ is not only America's hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new game franchise ever for a portable system.

Retailers already are reporting that Nintendogs, made exclusively for the hand-held Nintendo DS™, has sold out in numerous locations across the country, and Nintendo will deliver more shipments as soon as possible. The three versions of Nintendogs and the DS unit itself consistently rank at the top of Amazon.com's best-selling list of all video game products.

"Nearly 15 percent of all DS owners bought Nintendogs in just a week, a virtually unprecedented adoption rate for any title on an established system," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "And it's also helping sell new DS hardware. Coupled with a price drop to $129.99, retailers are reporting DS sales up between one and a half and three times previous levels, and last week DS comfortably outsold our portable competitors."

Nintendogs lets owners train and care for lifelike puppies using the DS system's touch screen and microphone. It became a cultural phenomenon in Japan and launched in the United States on Aug. 22.

People who like traditional hard-core video games have plenty to enjoy as well. Retailers also report that the new Advance Wars®: Dual Strike military strategy game for Nintendo DS has become one of Nintendo's top sellers.

That's absolutely HUGE! I'm pleasantly surprised Advance Wars is doing well too! I think this is the turning point for DS in the US now, just like it was in Japan when Nintendogs hit.

Good news, I wasn't sure if this game would "translate" to North America.  I wonder how it's affected hardware sales?

Advance Wars: Duel Strike deserves to be one of the system's top, if not top, sellars. It's currently the best reviewed game over and gamerankings.com, and I would rank it as my third favorite game of all time (behind only Smash Bros Melee and Diablo 2). Only problem is that it has consumed 40 hours of my time in the past one and half weeks O_o...

Well considering that Sony has ripped of Nintendo's franchises in the past (Fuku-Fuku, Monster Kingdom, Adult Training, etc) how long do you think it'll be before they make like "Sony's Snakes" or something (I chose snake since those are what COOL kids own)?

50,000? That's good, but not great. Then again, many games can only dream of reaching, say, 100,000. Advance Wars shouldn't take too long to hit that number, or possibly double that.

And what of the commercial being bad? I thought it was clever. Though strangely, the two arguing army guys was probably a reference to the two CO system, and yet the commercial made no mention of that, only describing "dual screen combat".

Bill was talking about the Nintendogs commercial..

Anyway, 250,000 is a HUGE number, especially in the US, especially in the first week.  It's way better than I expected.  In Japan it sold 400,000 in the first month, and the US launch has been better than the Japan launch.

Oh really? What about Pokemon? Anyone have (or know) how sales were for the original Pokemon Red and Blue in NA? I'd imagine they were greater, since Pokemon become quite the trend back in the day. Or was it all hype?

Anyway, quarter million isn't bad. Considering how RE 4 took 4 months to reach half a mill, Nintendogs may reach that number by months end.

If and when they release Nintencats, it'll be too easy to sell.  I don't think there's anything that can compete with teh KiTty!! People will ooze away at the cuteness.

I don't have the data, but I imagine Nintendogs had a better opening, but won't have the same kind of legs (sales past the debut) as Pokémon had.

I think Nintendogs is going to have really long legs too, practically anyone seeing someone else playing with their puppies are going to want one too.

That sort of figures, especially for those who like my sister who suddenly thought Nintendogs was the best game in the world when she saw the commercial.

I don't like the timing of Advance War's release though.  A week before school.  This means I can't play it 8 hours a day like I used to

I don't understand the appeal about Nintencats, it seems boring.  Sure, I love cats, but what can you do with them?  Even a non-game needs gameplay.  You don't take cats out for walks, you don't teach them tricks, they'll law you to death when you try to give them a bath- really, it seems incredibely stupid.  Explain plz.

Exactly KN, Nintencats would be lame, you wouldn't be able to do anything because the cat would just do whatever it wants, you'd have no control, might as well watch a documentary about cats.

Dang, i thought Advance Wars would get more sales.

Note:  Don't let school stop you from playing this game 8hrs a day!  Have a fat Binder in front of the DS and set the DS's top screen down and then use a stylus that is like a pen, teacher's will never notice lol.

I had an idea about NintenCats when I was falling asleep with my cat on my chest.  What if they included a rumble pack that simulated the cat's pur.  If you want to fall asleep to the cat you just put the DS on your chest (or some other place since vibrations cause other things o_0) and the rumbling, not to mention the sound of a pur would be a perfect simulator.

Other than that though, the ability to flip cats and flick water on them would more than make me buy the game.  Not to mention spray painting them

250k eh? Not bad, but now of course everyone is going to think of how many more units it would have sold if there was a better commercial. I want to see if it can keep going strong - 15% of DS owners have it now - hopefully that increases quite a bit. Also, I would like to see the console data. I know Reggie said it was beating the PSP handily, but does anyone have any data?

Hopefully, as Mario said, this is a major turning point in the race for North America. With all the new, exciting titles coming up, it's good to see Nintendogs selling well, as we know that the userbase is thriving, and the big name titles will probably sell well.

I believe DS sold 17,000 the week before Nintendogs came out, and then it sold 50,000 on Nintendogs week, so expect August numbers to still be pretty low (120,000?) and lower than or equal PSP, September should be huge though.

More like YOU"RE STUPID LA LA LA.  What exactly do you do with a kitten?  They aren't trainable (to the extent that a dog is), they don't fetch, you can't play tug-owar with them, you don't take them for walks, there aren't "Kitten Agility courses."

yeah kittens are awesome (and so damn cute that its unbearable) but from a gameplay standpoint it doesnt offer much, the rumble pack idea is very nice though, but kittens are there just to be looked at, cats dont interact a lot with people. You never teach a cat anything, and even if they are capable of learning they'll never do it.
