Nintendo Gaming / I'm conflicted by the Switch
« on: January 16, 2017, 06:13:57 PM »
I love the idea of the Switch, but as a home console it's too underpowered compared to PS4 and Xbox One (so it won't get any multiplatform games), and it's too expensive as a handheld. I'm conflicted as to what Nintendo hopes to achieve with this system. For the past decade, third party developers have avoided Nintendo systems because their games sell better on Xbox and PlayStation systems, and I don't think the situation will change unless Nintendo actively goes after those developers.

I get that Nintendo doesn't care about competing directly with Sony and MS, and that's fine, but public perception of them has soured lately and they need all the help they can get to win over gamers again.

Nintendo Gaming / Multiplatform handheld games?
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:37:39 PM »
Why don't developers make multiplatform handheld games like they do for consoles? PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One share many of the same third party games, but 3DS and Vita have their own unique libraries, with very little multiplatform stuff. Why is that?

Nintendo Gaming / The hadware power debate
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:15:28 PM »
As we all know, developers have the mindset that the stronger the hardware in a console, the easier it is to port existing game engines to it, leading to better games. This is why the Wii U hasn't gotten much third party support over the years, because developers deem it underpowered compared to the competition.

However, in the handheld market, it seems the power struggle doesn't matter. 3DS succeeded despite being weaker than the Vita and therefore got more third party support. Why doesn't the hardware power situation apply to handhelds like it does with consoles?

General Gaming / I hate the gaming community
« on: July 21, 2015, 04:56:26 PM »

Gamers seem to have this elitist attitude that the only good games are ones with photorealistic graphics, running on high-end hardware, with huge production values. The gaming industry shouldn't be so one-sided and exclusive. Mobile gaming has helped expand gaming to millions of people who would never buy a console or gaming PC. There are billions of people in the world, most of them have cellphones, that's a huge market to cater to. Mobile games give them a form of quick entertainment that they can enjoy in short bursts. This does not take away from your enjoyment of AAA games.

Then there's the ridiculous claim that games should only be made for one demographic, adult men. Gamers look down upon women, children, or the elderly who might also enjoy playing games. This form of sexism is extremely prejudice and does nothing to promote diversity. The gaming industry is much bigger than you think, and if it's to be taken seriously like movies and music, it should cater to all different types of people, regardless of age, gender, or demographic.

In short, this whole "casual vs core gamer" facade needs to stop. It does nothing but spawn toxicity within the gaming community. This isn't an "us vs them" war, gaming should be accessible for everyone. People like to play different types of games, whether they're on consoles, PC, or mobile devices. We should be happy that gaming has finally become accessible for everyone, it's no longer considered a nerdy hobby.

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Maker playable at Best Buy!!!
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:18:48 PM »
Mario Maker will be playable at Best Buy stores during E3! I'm so excited to finally play it; I've been hyped for this game ever since it got announced at last year's E3.

It would be more convenient if we could download these E3 demos on our own consoles.

Both Mario Maker and Yoshi's Wooly World were absent from the latest Nintendo Direct. Does that mean they've been pushed back to the second half of the year? Or will Nintendo announce their release dates within the next couple of months?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo figurines (not Amiibo)
« on: December 23, 2014, 10:50:59 PM »
I want to start a collection of posable Nintendo figurines. I've seen figurines from Jakks Pacific ("World of Nintendo" line), SH Figuarts (Mario), and Figma (Link, Samus). Which brand would you recommend?

Nintendo Gaming / Your wishes for Mario Maker
« on: December 20, 2014, 03:59:23 PM »
What stuff do you want to see added to Mario Maker? I'm hoping we can make boss fights and use warp pipes to connect different sections of a level. Making entire worlds would be nice also, but I doubt it'll go that far. Playing as Luigi instead of Mario would be great.

When do you expect the game will be released? I'm hoping it's released early next year, between February and April.

Nintendo Gaming / External hard drive not working using y-cable
« on: December 15, 2014, 05:05:24 PM »
My external hard drive isn't working properly. It sometimes disconnects randomly, even while using a Y-cable (I tried the front and rear USB ports). I was able to copy all of my game data to it, but when I tried copying the game data from the hard drive back to my Wii U I received this message:

"An error occurred while moving the game data. Some content couldn't be transferred."

So now some of my game data is stuck on the hard drive.

Nintendo Gaming / Where's Mario Maker?
« on: December 13, 2014, 02:59:24 PM »
Nintendo recently confirmed that Kirby's Rainbow Curse, Yoshi's Wooly World, and Splatoon are all coming early 2015, but they never mentioned Mario Maker. Is that game still on track for an early 2015 release?

General Gaming / Need help buying a new TV
« on: August 28, 2014, 09:39:02 PM »
I currently have a 3 year old LG 32" 720p LCD TV (not LED). I want to upgrade to a better quality LED TV, and my budget is $250.

Should I buy a 32" 720p TV for under $230, or a 32" 1080p TV for around $250? The brands I looked at were Samsung, LG, and Vizio.

General Gaming / Why don't handheld gamers care about specs?
« on: August 14, 2014, 03:49:00 PM »
Gamers and developers are obsessed with specs and hardware power. PS4 outsells and gets more support than Xbox One and Wii U because it's more powerful. Smartphones, PC's, and tablets get more powerful every year. PC gamers always want the best specs, GPU companies are trying to push the limits of mobile graphics, etc.

But when it comes to handhelds, it's like no one cares about specs anymore. Vita was lauded as the most powerful handheld of its time, yet the weaker 3DS outsold it. Game Boy outsold Game Gear, DS outsold PSP, the list goes on.

General Gaming / I don't get this whole indie movement
« on: August 04, 2014, 12:54:03 PM »
It's nice for people to be able to make the games they want on their own, but is leaving a big corporation really worth it? They're sacrificing job security and experience to make a game independently that may not be successful. Furthermore, indie developers always make themselves out to be the victims who were persecuted by the "big evil publishers". You don't see music artists rebelling against record labels, or movie producers rebelling against movie studios.

Nintendo Gaming / RUMOR: Nintendo management unhappy with Iwata
« on: August 02, 2014, 01:13:42 PM »
I found a very interesting rumor on GoNintendo. Apparently, Nintendo's management is unhappy with Iwata and they want to kick him out. They also want the company to start making smartphone games. Of course Iwata is against that, saying Nintendo's specialty is making integrated hardware and software.

General Gaming / Sound chips in game systems

Do modern game systems (handheld and console) have dedicated sound chips like the Super NES and SEGA Genesis had?

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Maker confirmed!
« on: June 05, 2014, 06:36:48 PM »
Mario Maker has been confirmed for Wii U. It's a tile-based level editor that uses the Gamepad's touchscreen. You can switch between 8-bit Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. graphics, with more graphics styles and objects planned for the final product. The game is releasing sometime in 2015.

Quote from: GoNintendo
Coming from a USGamer interview with Takashi Tezuka ...

"Obviously, there will be other graphical styles included and nothing's been decided yet, but I'd also like to include other graphics that aren't Mario. No, it won't be top-down (like Zelda) It's always going to be a 2D platformer."

- plans to integrate more enemy and object types
- hopes to include features similar to those of that of Mario Paint
- would like to add a music composition feature
- Tezuku says "sharing with friends is really the whole point of making levels"
- details on sharing have not been made public

General Gaming / Video game trailers that show nothing but CGI

How are players supposed to get excited about games that just show CGI trailers? What happened to showing actual gameplay and graphics?

Nintendo Gaming / Luigi's Ridin' Dirty
« on: June 03, 2014, 10:11:37 PM »
So all over the internet I've been seeing this new "Luigi Death Stare" meme that features Luigi glaring menacingly at other racers. The slow-mo videos are usually set to Chamillionaire's "Ridin' Dirty" rap song.

General Gaming / Xbox 360 hard drive question
« on: April 24, 2014, 01:37:54 PM »
Did Microsoft make a mistake by using a proprietary hard drive in the Xbox 360? Sony and Nintendo let you use your own hard drives on the PS3, PS4, and Wii U. It would have been so much easier if Microsoft had done the same.

Going proprietary is always a bad idea. Why use proprietary memory cards in the Vita when the competition uses normal SD cards? Why use proprietary hard drives in the Xbox 360 when the competition uses normal hard drives?

- Have automatic recording in the background like on PS4. I hate having to manually snap the Game DVR app every time I want to record my game.

- Fix the slooooooow upload speeds when using the Upload app. It should not take over 10 minutes to upload a 5 minute clip.

- Increase total recording time to 15 minutes.

General Gaming / Xbox One selling worse than Wii U?
« on: March 29, 2014, 02:59:11 PM »
I've been reading rumors that the Xbox One is selling worse than the Wii U. If that's true, then how is it getting more third-party support than Nintendo? Industry bias confirmed?

General Gaming / Are Android consoles part of the 8th generation?
« on: March 25, 2014, 07:08:04 PM »
Are Android consoles like the OUYA, NVIDIA Shield, GameStick, etc. part of the 8th generation of consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U)?

General Gaming / PS4 web browser
« on: March 25, 2014, 03:46:31 PM »

It's a nice improvement over the PS3's, but you can't even use the touchpad to control the mouse pointer. Surprisingly, the Wii U's browser is faster than the PS4's, despite the Wii U being significantly less powerful. How is that possible?

General Gaming / I hate console wars.
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:55:33 PM »
I hate fanboys who ridicule others for buying a product that they don't like. Some people like Xbox, some like PlayStation, some like Nintendo. Why all the hate? What's the point of arguing about it and perpetuating this stupid "console war"?
