Episode 74: Get This Guy Off Me!
« on: February 23, 2013, 12:43:35 PM »

This week, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star Fox! Oh, and talk about Fire Emblem, again.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/33414

Hello and welcome to episode 74 of Connectivity! We have two segments for you this week.

Kicking the show off, Scott, Neal, Nicholas, and Tyler celebrate Star Fox's 20th anniversary with a series retrospective. The guys discuss the highlights and lowlights of the space-bound vulpes' career. Also, the segment was recorded the night of 1UP's closure, so some time is spent openly weeping on mic.

After that, Neal, Patrick, Zach, and new staff member Curtis Bonds talk about what games they've been playing recently, such as Brain Age, Ni No Kuni, Pokémon Black and White Version 2, Dead Space 3, and more! Zach also announces that he thinks Back to the Future 3 is the best of the Back to the Future movies. Please tell him he is wrong. Please.

As always, you can click here to send us your listener mail. Next week, Dr. Jonathan Metts will return for another bonus segment all about space. Have a question for him? Shoot us an email!

BTTF3 kicks ass. It's not better than the first one, but it's definitely better than the second.

I'm inclined to agree, but boy do I love the first one.

Awesome Episode guys! I loved your tribute to starfox! Also touching words on 1UP. As always great work. To answer your question if you could work a segment on next weeks episode about the legacy of 1UP, that would awesome (:

1 -> 3 -> Animated series -> 2. Any move in which you have to stop it halfway through and explain WTF is going on is bad.

2 is a good movie, not as good as the first one but still good. All 3 are good, don't think I ever saw the cartoon (aside from clips of it included in the movie box set).

BTTF 1 is the best, followed by 3 and then 2.
As a kid I always loved the 2nd one, but looking at them now at an older age I think 2 is the weakest, although not by a huge margin. The first is easily the best though.

Speaking of Christopher Lloyd, did anyone else like The Pagemaster as a kid? I loved that film, but I found out much later in life that it's not highly thought of by others. Maybe it's just a case of right time, right place, but I watched that film so many times on VHS as a kid.

StarFox U will revolutionize the Space Combat Simulator genre for consoles just as GoldenEye did for First Person Shooters.

Imagine being able to call for help, or rescuing your teammate, when those are your friends controlling them instead of the AI. The other characters are out there fighting along with you anyway, so it really seems natural to just let everyone be controlled by human players. Maybe it can be free roaming, or maybe each player can have their own intersecting on-rails paths, or perhaps some kind of combination of both.

4-player Online Co-op With Video Chat Through the Star Fox Campaign.

When it comes out for the Wii U, the front facing camera combined with the microphone built into the controller will allow for the players to show up on the GamPad screen when they chat during the game. Instead of seeing Peppy’s face show up on the screen telling you to do a barrel roll, you would see your friend’s face up on the screen telling you to draw the enemy’s fire while he takes a shot. After playing through the original Star Fox, I wanted multiplayer; after playing through Star Fox 64, I wanted co-op multiplayer; after playing through Star Fox Assault, I wanted online co-op. With Star Fox Command, we actually had both multiplayer and online, but still no co-op. I will never stop wanting online co-op through the Star Fox campaign. I hope that we get it on the Wii U.

I LOVED Tyler's reasoning for Monster Games working on StarFox. It makes perfect sense, and their experience with Pilotwings is just more evidence that they have what it takes. Oh man, I hope it's a thing.

I'm not there yet, but I assume you guys start talking about BTTF at some point? I think 2 is ****. I used to be impressed by all the 2015 stuff as a kid, but watching it now, the whole sequence in 1955 is just painful. "Hey, people loved when Marty was having all sorts of fun interactions with his young parents in the first movie, right? I got an idea: let's revisit that era, but have him try to avoid any interactions at all!". Ugh. So boring.

@Pix, Pagemaster! Yes.
Good, fun flick. Sure, it's no Neverending Story, but it is a fun romp nonetheless.

I'll say it: I really liked BttF 2. Come at me bros, etc. etc.

Anyhow, I liked the Starfox discussion. I would only add that I've always thought of the difference between Starfox and Starfox 64 as being the difference between a SHMUP rail-shooter and a score-attack rail shooter. 64 was just much easier, so the challenge always came from trying to first get the medals, and then to beat your high score. By contrast, merely beating the levels in the original was challenging enough for me.
