Xbox original
« on: October 07, 2016, 10:51:45 AM »
I finally broke down and picked up an original Xbox. I grabbed a few games, well a ton of games really.
I am curious if anyone who is familiar with the system could answer some questions.

Is it normal for the console to be picky about reading discs? I tested several games but two I have do not work on it period. Fable and Ninja Gaiden Black, they both worked and were tested fine at the game store, I took them back when they didn't work and the discs look amazing no smudges or scratches.

Also does it have to remain plugged in at all times to keep the clock and date settings? I have everything plugged into a power strip that I turn to the off setting when I leave the house or go to bed, I am starting to wonder if that is the reason why the console loses the date and time settings or if there is something else wrong with it.

Does it make a difference? For power bill reasons I am not moving it to a different strip so unless there are games that require, or use the feature meaningfully I should be fine just selecting the default its kind of like a trip back in time so not a major issue.

Anyone who has experience with it wants to share any cool tips or secrets or talk about games please feel free to reply. Thanks.

I have several Xbox original games (Mercenaries, Burnout 3, Ninja Gaiden Black, Spiderman 2), but i play them on 360.

Also does it have to remain plugged in at all times to keep the clock and date settings?
Look up if xbox has a battery to keep current time information. Maybe you need to replace it.

When I owned an Xbox, renting games was a real crap shoot. Lots of discs wouldn't play despite working in the rental store or not having any visible damage to them. The small discount on used games never was worth the hassle of them frequently not working.

Did you pick up Morrowind?

I liked Fuzion Frenzy best, but that's a party game so it isn't for everyone.

I second Fusion Frenzy.

My friend owned the xbox, so I can only go based off the snippets of gameplay I got when hanging out with friends there:

Cel Damage was a fun multiplayer game too, although I think that's available on newer platforms now, too.

Original Dead or Alive Beach Voleyball wasn't quite as breast-tastic as it currently is (was still bad), BUT i remember there being a competent arcade volleyball game buried underneath it.

Dead or alive 3 was OK.

Burnout series is great.

If you have a newer Xbox, I'd suggest just getting a newer version of the Halo games on those systems.

If you want a mediocre squad shooter, Brute Force is for you.

I got an Xbox for FREE last year!.  Previous owner didn't even know if it worked and I had to get the cables and controller myself.  So far I only have two games.  I needed a game to test with a MechAssault was $3 and I heard it was decent so I got it.  It's okay, not great.  Worth three bucks though.  So far I only have one other game as my backlog is big enough that I haven't focused on building my Xbox library (and most of the good multiplatform games I bought for the Cube or PS2 years ago) and that's Crimson Skies.  I've only played it for a few hours but it seems like a good one.  Pretty similar to Rogue Leader which is one of my favourite Cube games.

I get the clock reset as well if I leave the system unplugged.  I looked it up and it's normal.  Couldn't say about it being finicky with discs though.  I don't have that problem.

I do have Morrowwind but that isn't a good substitute for Fable. The guy at the game store said I could exchange the console for a different one but I am afraid if it is a common problem what happens if I exchange it to fix those two games but then other games that were working on it stop working. Or worse yet I lose my save data on the games I have been playing. Now I have to check if there is a way to transfer save data. I been getting pretty far in MechAssault and Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.

Plus i put a couple hours into Halo already. I am trying to figure out what I hated about this thing when it was new I wish I had bought one before now. Still not sold on the 360 but I am getting there.

That is a common problem in the console, you can buy a new DVD drive and do the exchange..but before that clean the DVD manually to see if it works.

I took it in to the store I bought it, they cleaned the system and tested all of the games I bought, it is now working just fine. I figured out the date and time issues is because the console doesn't have an internal battery so whenever turn off the power switch it loses that data. I guess since there are not games that work like Animal Crossing that rely on that, that I am aware of, I really don't care.

Now that I think of it, I never got to play much of Fable because neither rental store within walking distance to my apartment had a copy that I could get to work.

Apparently that is a common problem. I took everything back to the store and we tested I think four different Fable discs before we found one that loaded up. It's not the end of the world, I have the game on PC but its still one of the best RPG's for the system.

Shame that the disc(drive)s are so seemingly finnicky. :(
If you're looking for more suggestions still, the only X-Box game that made me consider buying one was Panzer Dragoon Orta. Not sure how easy that is to find nowadays though, but it seemed plentifully available at the time. Jet Set Radio Future is also on it!

Also if you've not tried some of the multiplats of that generation, the X-Box versions were often great. Beyond Good & Evil is on it, as are Psychonauts (never appeared on Gamecube!), Hulk Ultimate Destruction and that Metal Arms Glitch System game which I've heard was pretty good.

I bought it for two real reasons. One as a cheap alternative to the expensive PS2 and way over priced Game Cube ports of the same games. Two, the Sega exclusives as I love Sega, minus that stupid cartoony skate boarding game, but yes Panzer Dragoon Orta is on my to get list.

I have only had the system for barely 2 weeks and am already up to 36 games and counting. I am surprised how cheap they are, I saw Taito Legends for PS2 at a game store, $25 bucks, I picked up the same game on Xbox at the same store, $6. That right there is number one reason I wanted me an Xbox.

I am kind of weird in my gaming style though. I like Nintendo, sort of, and I really love Sega, but I hate cartoony and cutesy games for the most part and am not that into quirky stuff. I despise Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Pokemon and hate all things that are made out of yarn or look like water color graphics.

As for exclusives, I am looking mainly at Mech games, sci-fi games, a few shooters, and the 1st party stuff. For multiplats I will always pick whichever version I come across that is the cheapest, regardless of content or quality, I just want the core game I don't care about online (those are all offline now anyways) and I am not into rhythm games or sports or racing games that much. Except I like some arcade racing games I am familiar with the ones to get.

Thanks for the discussions I am trying to get all this sorted out. Please don't be taken back by my bluntness I am not that tactful.

Yeah costwise original X-Box games are incredibly cheap, even moreso than PS2 right? So definitely a smart move to collect a bit for it. Since you mention kinda liking arcade racers - ever heard of Quantum Redshift? It's this XGR/WipeOut clone that's exclusive to the X-Box, and goes for dirtcheap nowadays. I'll be honest, it's doesn't have the charm of F-Zero GX or perhaps even XGRA 4, but it did have an awesome soundtrack. Microsoft really wanted this to be a franchise I think, because they got Junkie XL to do the music (he's a film composer now, did Mad Max Fury Road recently).

I had friends who constantly mentioned Jade Empire, no clue what it is. Oh and if you've ever liked an Oddworld game, that got the 3D platformer treatment on X-Box right? But since you've already gotten 36 titles I assume you know of that one for sure.
EDIT: oh and you mention mechs. If you somehow find a full working set of Steel Battalion... That's gotta be an intense experience haha!

Probably because it was such an obvious suggestion there is no chance anyone would buy an Xbox and not consider getting that game? Do you also tell people who buy Nintendo consoles to be sure and pick up a Mario game?

Doesn't the Xbox have a weird relationship with component cables where games have their display settings set based on different versions of the hardware or some such nonsense?

Not that I am aware of no. I know you can change the settings in the console to display 720p and if a game supports that it will adjust. But my knowledge is limited just my experience with the 36 games I have, many of which do support 720p.

Xbox original capacitor leaks?

Bump.

Has anyone heard of the Xbox original's clock (super)capacitor leaking? I recently stumbled upon a few youtube videos and threads about removing them:

I'm trying to decide whether to remove it or not. Mine doesn't seem to be leaking, at least not yet....

I haven't heard of this but I'm not surprised Is it swollen? is top popped? Caps go bad on motherboards all the time. At my old job, we used to have an electrical engineer friend who was a wizard at swapping caps. He would repair motherboard for about $25 a pop.
