Retro Could Collaborate with Nintendo on a Future Zelda Game

Miyamoto reveals what's possibly in store for Retro Studios' future.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28722

Zelda is a possible franchise for collaboration between Retro Studios and Nintendo, according to series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Wired's interview with Miyamoto shed light on their previous collaboration and what they could work together on in the future.

Retro Studios, the developer behind the Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns, recently worked with Nintendo on Mario Kart 7. This was the first time part of a (non-arcade) Mario Kart game was handled outside of Nintendo. In the interview, Miyamoto discussed how both western and Japanese developers have different styles. With the collaboration, he says they were able to ultimately create a game with a variety of different tastes. Still talking about the success of collaborating with Retro, Miyamoto explained "when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration."

As long as they do not take it first person that would awesome. If it goes first person it will royally suck for me.

Hey, let's keep an open mind here.  Skyrim is first person.  And I don't think anyone expected Metroid Prime to actually be good, let alone brilliant, before it came out.

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

The problem for me is I have fairly severe motion sickness when playing first person games. I was never able to play any of the Metroid Prime games because of it and I love Metroid. If they take Zelda first person I would not be able to play it. So Zelda in first person would suck for me.

What Miyamoto is talking about is using Retro to help develop part of a Zelda game with EAD 3 like Retro helped EAD 1 develop Mario Kart 7.  He's not talking about letting Retro develop a Zelda game all by themselves like with Metroid and Donkey Kong.  If a Zelda collaboration was to be made with Retro like it was for Mario Kart than Retro would be responsible for designing certain area's of the game to help speed up development.

Something like this could actually happen considering Iwata wants a Zelda for the Wii U ready in the next 3 years, I could see Nintendo using Retro to help EAD 3 develop the game in time.

I don't want Retro doing this unless they get to do it themselves. They've proven they're capable; they deserve the ability to make their own game, not play second fiddle to some other studio.

I don't think it's that controversial to say that I believe Retro is a superior developer to any EAD studio but EAD Tokyo.

Nintendo is probably  thinking of ways it can start speeding up the game development process, by handing it off to a western studio it allows them to use the same formula, but add to it new stuff that doesn't even occur to EAD. They have less need to upend the table, because of this. Which will speed up development time.

Retro is far too talented to be used that way.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Don't waste Retro on busywork.

I agree with insane and KDR. EAD Tokyo, Retro and Disaster excluded Monolith are the jewels in Nintendo's development talents.

If Retro is to make Zelda, i want Retro making Zelda while they have the backup support of another nintendo team to help them at their direction. Not the other way around.
