Theme to be determined? What? I thought it was set that XC would be Xenoblade Chronicles X! Well, that was my plan but I also thought I'd have finished the game by now only to have trailed off in Chapter 10 last year and not gotten back to it. That said, XCX doesn't really work as a real roman numeral so I suppose it could happen later during the XC period of Mafia games. I have played the original Xenoblade Chronicles so I'm currently thinking of maybe making that game the theme. While it would have been nice to have XC open to the whole series, I don't think people want XC3 spoilers right now and I still need to get through 2 so that would make the general theme difficult to do from my hosting perspective thought it could probably be done.
I've also had some other ideas for possibilities. Mario Sports as a theme or Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. Another Kirby themed game after so many years since the last one. For that matter, I'm always tempted to do another Animal Crossing Mafia but wouldn't mind doing another Donkey Kong theme, Jurassic Park and DC Universe theme. (We've never done a Marvel themed one but I'm just not sure I'm the best host for that as I just never got into that comic universe much.) And then there's Pokemon. Untouched since Mafia 8. I think it's time it was revisited.
In any case, I thought I'd throw out a sign-up thread for now since I wouldn't be planning on starting anything until Sept. 12 anyways. Once Backlaugust is done then I'll sit down and think out what I actually want to do and remind myself how to host one of these games again. But in the meantime, might as well let these sign-ups be open for as long as possible and see what the player response is. You know me. I'm always looking for that magic minimum number of 16 players.

Sure why the heck not, although depending on what happens in the next month or so with the move. We have been approved we are just waiting on a letter in the mail to set the interview day. The letter is supposed to be here some time the 1st week of September and then after the interview we have 120 days to find a place so we will see what happens.
So tentatively in and will update status closer to the end of the signups.

But it's gotta be Xenoblade Chronicles as the theme, it's just gotta! I've a feeling that we're gonna make it that even if you choose something else anyway! And you don't have to worry, I myself have played only XC1 and XCX so there won't be any spoilers for 2 and 3 from me.

I thought I'd hammer out the details on this a few days ago but I've let time slip away on other projects. That said, since it seems like most people signing up were already jumping on the Xenoblade bandwagon, I can confirm I'll make this a Xenoblade Chronicles 1 themed game. I've been thinking a bit on this and there's a couple things I might be able to do to bring some of that Xenoblade flavor to the rules of Mafia.
I know I had set the deadline of starting this game for Sept. 12 aka tomorrow but let's push that date back to next week Sept. 19. Hopefully that won't inconvenience too many players who have signed up. If all goes well, that time will allow me to find a few other players to get the player count up and I'll also start writing up the rules and roles to get those posted.
Finally, when it comes to roleplay, I'll be taking the character of Alvis so that one is off-limits. You know it makes sense for the host to have that role.

Well, well, well. This sure went according to plan.... :P
To make a long story short, I was unable to launch the game last month because my rolodex finally failed me and I just couldn't seem to get the player count up to 16 as various people I reached out to declined to play. As it turns out, launching it then might have been a headache anyways.
Hope no one was too worried about my well-being. I'm pretty much fine. Just taking care of a bunch of things I'd been putting off but needed to finally get done now like automobile maintenance, technology upgrades, and other life decisions and responsibilities combined with a busy time at work. With no clear ETA for when this game could happen, I didn't really know what to say or post about whether this game could happen or not. Combined with the stuff I was trying to also get done keeping me pretty busy from checking in too often, I just found it easier to say nothing and ignore the whole situation.
But now that I've had a well-deserved vacation, I'm ready to see if we can't get this game happening yet. And maybe with a month's time passed, those that couldn't make it before can make it now. I guess I'll check in with everyone again and see what the ultimate situation will be for this game.

Well for me the moving truck is coming tomorrow morning so I should be settled in by the 1st. I have internet at the new place so I am good there. If the game starts on the 1st or the 1st week of the month I will be good to play.

Yeah, this has been on my mind the past couple weeks. I was wondering about sending out a mass pm to see if those who signed were still up for it and thinking about having start today but clearly that never happened. It's so much easier to just play Paper Mario and watch movies than type up a whole lot of text and work out rules. I need to rekindle my hosting fire. I had some ideas for this XC theme too. I just can't seem to take the time to hammer things without it seeming like a lot of work and then wanting to do anything else.
The idea of people choosing crops and animals in Harvest Moon seemed to help in having more posting activity in the past three - four games I've hosted. So, I wanted to do something like that this game with people being able to acquire collectables during the game day like the Sour Gooseberry or Retro Diode in Xenoblade to fill in their own Collectopaedia. It would sort of act like a personal bingo card and as people filled it in then they could get bonuses like two votes instead of one or maybe a free protection for one night or day. Again, I need to work out the details but that's the direction I was thinking there.
I was contemplating doing something with having Shulk as a role in which he could have visions of the future such as who the mafia or killer might target or who would be protected by the doctor. Various game actions like that. However, that would require a lot of orders needing to be sent in ahead of time and locked in so I'll probably just make Shulk the detective. Sharla would obviously be the doctor role.
The big twist that came to me for this game would be Killer role aka Zanza. Not to get into XC Spoiler territory (but it's been 12 years. Can't hold back on this stuff forever, right?) but I was thinking of allowing Zanza to recruit some players as disciples and sort of act like a second mafia. The main goal of Zanza will be to acquire the Monado from Shulk. The way to do that would be for Zanza to successfully eliminate the detective Shulk role. If Zanza does that, then all eliminated players in the game up to this point would come back as Telethia beasts with the goal of voting out and eliminating the remaining alive players. The remaining alive players would then need to regroup and work together to try and eliminate the Telethia and Zanza. I've got an idea of how to allow the alive players to fight back against the Telethia with a Break, Topple, and Daze vote system but I'm not going to break it all down right now as I'm still unsure if maybe this morph the game into something that is no longer really Mafia. But I do feel like this idea is close to being perhaps the best and possibly most successful way of bringing back eliminated players into the game without compromising what they may have already known when eliminated or learned since as the ties and alliances will be broken with those eliminated players coming back with a new goal and team opposite all those still alive.
So, yeah, I've had ideas percolating still on this. It's just how complex do I want to get for another game? How much rules and ability balancing will I have to spend time on writing up and working out? Do I really want to climb another rule mountain that most people won't read or be confused about?

So, you want to play a Mafia game, huh?
To be honest, it has been on my mind a couple weeks before ThePerm bumped this. But I figured that I'll have to redo sign-ups to double check who's still in. And if I give it a couple weeks that would have put it into the Thanksgiving weekend and people may not want to play during that time as they'll be busy in life. After that is December which traditionally can have a lower turnout as people don't want to commit to a long or complicated game as they prepare for the holidays. Thus, it seemed to me that maybe the second week of January would be the best time to try again on this. Things can be a bit slower at that time after New Year's is over so it might allow for more player participation. I've actually got my copy of XC:DE back out because I was thinking of popping that back in and messing around a bit in the game to remind myself about elements of the game and the story during December so as to try for a January launch. So stay tuned on that front.
In the meantime, if someone wants to host a Safe Words game, I'd love to continue beating you all at that and make it three in a row victories! :evil;
