TalkBack / RE:SPECIALS: Nintendo World Report's Wii Launch Adventures
« on: December 06, 2006, 02:43:13 PM »
My story is pretty simple. I called both Walmarts in my town Saturday night around 10:00PM asking what the situation looked like. I was told both stores already had more people in line than they had consoles. So I went to bed.

The next morning I called all of the local stores after they opened and was obviously told they were all sold out before opening. So I didn't waste any time waiting in line.

The next few days I made a few calls and was always told they never knew when they were getting them in. So I eventually quit wasting my time with that.

Black Friday and that weekend, I didn't even bother.

Last weekend I did make a call to TRU Sunday morning and was told they had sold out before they opened so once again I didn't waste any gas or time waiting in line.

I'm not even trying any more till after Christmas. Until I can simply walk into a store and pick one up, I'm just not going to get one. I do have Zelda and an extra remote sitting on my shelf, but right now they are useless. That's alright, I've got a good 50 hours lined up with (GCN) Baten Kaitos Origins along with my DS.

I doubt the controller speaker is meant to replace the sound from your TV or your surround sound system. It's supposed to just add a little, not replace anything. I doubt you are going to notice the quality of the sound when you are playing a game with the TV sound on. You said yourself you were playing without the TV sound on.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Single Response Wii Launch Opinion Thread
« on: September 14, 2006, 05:50:48 PM »
Overall feeling? Disappointment. And it all points directly toward the price.

I guess I wouldn't be so disappointed with it had Nintendo had not given false expectations. All we heard is how great a price point it would be and how it was going to grab the non gamers as well as the gamers. For $350, which by the time you pick up a game and an extra controller is what you are going to be paying, there is no way non gamers are going to pick this up on an impulse buy. I was fully expecting the price to be around $179, or $199 worst case. Does anyone else think Nintendo may have intended this to be the price but then tacked on an extra $50 when they saw the price of the PS3? I get that feeling. This is the most expensive Nintendo console to date if I'm not mistaken. Weren't all the others $200?

I guess it's nice to get a pack in game but it almost feels like you are getting a game like solitaire that comes with your PC. This certainly isn't a free Mario game. I would gladly let Nintendo keep this one if it knocked $30-$50 off the price.

On a personal level, it's hard for me to get excited about all the the WiiConnect features when I know I won't be participating (stuck on dial up). But that's not Nintendo's fault. Will there be options available to those of us without access to this to download games, like maybe through EB or something?

Finally, what is with Nintendo make the GCN owners wait an extra 2 or 3 weeks for Zelda?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:planetgamecube not for gc anymore?
« on: January 28, 2006, 04:22:15 PM »
***List your TOP TEN Favorite GAME CUBE games.***

1) Animal Crossing
2) Resident Evil 4
3) Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
4) Resident Evil
5) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
6) Baten Kaitos
7) Pikmin 2
8) Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
9) Mario Superstar Baseball
10) Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

***next your favorite Game Cube moment***

Probably launch night for the GC. I was at Walmart at midnight, wasn't sure if I was going to get one, and was just excited that if everything worked out I'd be playing GC games all day Sunday (the next day). It's kind of sad that I don't think anything topped that moment for me but I still had a ton of fun with the GC.

***Tell your Favorite Game Cube accessory and tell why..***

Probably my controller extension cords (haha). I have a Wavebird but I just prefer to have the rumble. Therefore, the extension cords work out well.

***List your favorite moments in GC games.***

In no order--

--playing the Resident Evil series for the first time
--spending nearly a year playing Animal Crossing
--jumping off the castle walls in Prince of Persia
--feeling like you were part of a cartoon in Zelda
--much too many to list

***What was your most dispointing moment in GC***

Without a doubt learning that Rare would not be producing anymore games for the GC after Star Fox Adventures...there went Donkey Kong Racing, Kameo, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and many others.

***Biggest Surprise hit for GC***

Probably Baten Kaitos. I waited a long time before buying it because most said the whole card system was a turnoff. Well, I absolutely loved the card system and wish more games were like that. I'm also surprised by The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age which I'm playing through right now.

***What pursuaded you to get your GC***

The thousands of enjoyable hours I got out of my NES, SNES, and N64 had me lining up on launch night to grab my GC.

***What was the first game you played for GC?***

Luigi's Mansion...I got that along with Waverace: Blue Storm at launch.

***What was the first GC game you beat.***

Luigi's Mansion...fun but short and not very difficult.

***Do you have more Nintendo made games than non or vice versa?***

27 Nintendo made/published
49 3rd party

***If you could change 1 thing about your GC what woudl it be.***

The look....it just didn't have the coolness factor from the very beginning. Many people passed over it which meant less games were made for it.

***IF you could have 1 systenm exclusive proted over to GC what game woudl it be?***

From Playstation 2 it would be Final Fantasy

Xbox it would be Fable

***If you could go back in time and buy one of the other systems instead would you have done it?***

Nope, there's no way I'd be happy knowing there was a Mario or Zelda out there that I wasn't able to play.

***If Nintendo announced tehy would DELAY Revolution a whol nothe ryear to maek more games, and decided to release a few canceled games for GC

A) Buy more games for GC
B) go and get some of the older games you missed
C) buy a PS3.xbox 360
D) give up on video games completely.***

A&B

***My last question and then i have a couple things to say.***

***Are you satisfied with your GC or are you still playing it just cuz your stuborn? please be honest but dont flame anyone else/***

I'm satisfied with my GC. I still play it almost every day as I still have older games I haven't played through yet. Although there are only 3 or 4 GC games scheduled for '06 that I'm interested in, I have a large backload of games to play through. I won't be bored. But to be honest my DS gets more playtime right now.

For every one person I've read having a hard time with Nintendo's customer service, I've read 10 people being very satisfied with it. Maybe you should just call instead of dealing with mail.

As for me, I've had my GC since the launch date. I have 60+ games for it and probably average 2 hrs a day playing. About a year ago my GC began not reading the discs. It would eventually play the games but I'd have to try 4 or 5 times to get it to work. I simply cleaned my lense with rubbing alcohol and have not had a problem since. However, I know that other people that have tried that said it did nothing for them.

I wondered 3 years ago, and still wonder today, why doesn't Nintendo give out demo discs? Third party games sell bad on the GC? Put a few demo's on a demo disc to promote whatever 3rd parties games are coming out and give hardcore Nintendo gamers a chance to experience a game they otherwise wouldn't have even thought about. I'm not talking about putting them on shelves for $10, I'm talking about free. Pack them in with Nintendo Power, get them in EB, heck for every first party Nintendo game released their should be a demo or two included in the game that spotlights a 3rd party game. Help them out a little. It seems so obvious and yet Nintendo completely ignores it. Why would any 3rd party have a problem with this? They wouldn't.

Nintendo supposedly has 7 billion dollars in the bank, well, eat a little of it and give Nintendo fans some demos. Remember the demo that had Splinter Cell, Billy Hatcher, Soul Calibur, Sonic DX, and Viewtiful Joe? Well, I now own 3 of those games. It's too bad I had to pay $10 to try them out though.

This idea will not get Nintendo to the level of Sony in terms of 3rd party games but it can't hurt I think it would be a nice gesture toward 3rd parties.

I ordered mine Tues night from the EA Store and it came Fri evening. I was very surprised to see it that quick. Plus, I only paid $21 which was even better.

I'm having a lot fun with it so far. Pitching is very easy to learn but hitting is taking me awhile. I'm 3-4 in my season now. Also, have atleast 200 memory card blocks available and 500 if you want to save everything from every mode.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Where did all the Gamers Go?
« on: January 15, 2005, 12:44:57 PM »
I'm 32 and have been a Nintendo gamer since the NES. The GC was an easy sell to me. I bought it on launch day with no hesitation, and a couple years later, no regrets. I play it nearly every day and have a library of around 60 games.

My brother in law also bought a GC at launch. I was surprised to hear this because his main focus is sports games. Not surprisingly, he sold it within a month and got an XBox. He's a lot happier with that because there are tons of sports games.

Another friend's family got a PS2 because it was considered the best system by them. They mainly play war games and popular licensed games.

TalkBack / RE:Editorial: PlayStation or Xbox?
« on: October 26, 2004, 06:54:07 AM »
I think if Nintendo wants to really compete with Playstation and X-Box they need to attract the casual gamer. The question is, how do do that? Commercials are nice if done right (Nintendo still needs to improve there) and great games will help too (imo, Nintendo already has this). But what they really need to focus on is sports games. Specifically, football, racing, and to a lesser extent baseball and basketball. These are the games that most casual gamers go for. These are the games that are cool to play with your buddies. These are the games we see the actual athletes playing and loving. These are the games that will make the question, 'Playstation, XBox, or Nintendo?'

Nintendo has few sports games on the Cube and would have likely near zero if EA didn't still support it. Thankfully, we do get Madden but everyone knows it's always the inferior version...whether it's because of the huge blocks of memory space needed, lack of online play, or gamers' perception that the Cube controller doesn't compare to the competition for sports games. I realize most gamers don't even play online but knowing that option is there makes it more appealing than the offline Cube version. Nintendo really needs to get Sega's sports games back, especially now that they're selling at $20 a piece. I only own Madden 2002 for my Cube but if Sega's $20 version of their 2005 football game had been available to me, I would have bought it in an instance. Once Nintendo has these games, they need to see about how to make the special so that people will want them. I'm not talking about linking to the GBA, I'm talking about exclusive content for their versions. It would take money and persuasion to EA and Sega but if Nintendo wants to get back in the mainstream, it has to be done.

I just think that seeing Ray Lewis or Randy Moss on and NFL Countdown feature playing Madden using a Cube would be more beneficial to Nintendo that spending millions on commercials that the majority of the gaming public perceives as being targeted to 12 yr olds. Nintendo has to give casual gamers a reason to want to buy their system. I think sports games is the way to start. Not just have them but offer something really amazing in them. Until Nintendo decides to jump online, this will be even harder.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Silicon Knights and Nintendo break up
« on: April 13, 2004, 04:38:37 PM »
Yep, they are free to continue to make game for Nintendo's console...but do you really think they will? The market for their games is clearly on the XBox and PS2. That tranlates to them making more money with the XBox and PS2. Just like most other 3rd parties, Nintendo will be left with the shoddy ports, if anything at all. Seriously, Capcom is the only 3rd party that really makes special games for the GC and I expect that to end any day.

The news wouldn't be nearly as disappointing if they really were just going to make games for the XBox and PS2 along with quality games for the GC. But as any GC owner will attest to, we know that's not how it will work out.

I don't know who is to blame...Nintendo? SK? The GC user base? It really doesn't matter. But it's becoming increasingly clear that to be a Nintendo console owner you almost have to pick up a 2nd console to fill in the gaps Nintendo can't cover...(rpg's, sports, mature titles).

My wife went to look for it today and both stores said the game shipped today (17th) and they expected to have it by Friday (19th). However, I've seen a couple people on other boards did find it today. So it'll be today or tomorrow depending on where you live.

What did you guys think of Harvest Moon 3 for GBC?

That is the only Harvest Moon game I have ever played and i did not enjoy it very much.  I want to know if the limitations of the GBC effected so much that is is a completely different game form AWL.  (obviously not too different, but i think you get my point.  How does HM3compare to AWL?)

I own Harvest Moon 3 for GBC and it really isn't very good compared to Harvest Moon on the N64 and Harvest Moon on the GBA. I didn't play it nearly as much as the other two. One big thing it's missing is the whole dating aspect.  I really don't even remember too much from it, besides being underwhelmed after I had played through a good portion of it. As far as I'm concerned, the N64 and GBA version are ten times better and I'm betting the Cube version will be as well.

I think you should try one of the other Harvest Moon games before judging the series on the lackluster GBC game.

I've obviously never played this new version for the Cube but I've played the ones on the N64, GBC, and GBA extensively. If this one is similar to them, and I'm sure it is, then yeah, there will be days when you are pressed for time and won't be able to do everything you wanted. This is especially true when you first start the game because you'll have all the crappy tools and nothing to fall back on as far as money goes. However, after you play awhile, you'll either get new/better tools or level up the ones you have that allow to do more work in less time. You'll then have time to really explore the game by fishing, talking to the girls, or doing whatever you like.

So yeah, you will feel rushed but it won't last long as long as you stick it out.

Okay, I've read that the game takes up 47 memory blocks on a memory card. How many save slots do you get with those 47 blocks?

Do you know how many different crops you can grow, or about how many?

Have you come across anything related to linking up with the GBA game? I've stumbled upon where to go in the GBA game by accident. Just wondering if it's kind of hidden in the GC game or if it's a feature made available from the start?

Can you catch insects/animals?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:For those who didn't buy Beyond Good & Evil...
« on: February 26, 2004, 03:31:09 PM »
I fall in line with about everyone else here. I've been interested in Beyond Good and Evil since information was first released about it. After reading previews, and then mostly favorable reviews, I knew this was a game I'd have to buy. However, I still haven't yet. This is why.....

In November I ended up buying Mario Kart for my birthday. Then EA ran an online sale that allowed me to get The Sims: Bustin Out for both the GC and GBA for around $35 total. So I couldn't pass that up. I also bought Harvest Moon for the GBA sometime in that period.  For Christmas I gave my wife a list of games to choose from for me. Beyond Good and Evil was one on the list but she ended up choosing Viewtiful Joe. So I got that one with no complaints from me. Beyond Good and Evil was still on my list to get. Then, in January, Circuit City began having some deals on games so I got Hitman 2 (GC)for $15 along with Banjo-Kazooie for GBA and Breath of Fire for GBA for $10 a piece. On top of that UbiSoft ran the promotion that if you bought Prince of Persia (another game I really wanted) you got Splinter Cell (a game I was always curious about) for free. So I waited till the last day of the month and made the purchase. Oh yeah, I squeezed Mario and Luigi (GBA) in there somewhere in there too.

In February, I have bought no games. It's been a month that I've tried to actually play through some of these games. Beyond Good and Evil is still a game I want along with games like Tak and the Power of Juju and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. I think all are around $20 now so it has worked out well for me. Of course in a week or two Harvest Moon for the GC will be released and I'll have to get that one.

There are just too many games and too little time to play them all. Beyond Good and Evil just got squeezed out. I will still buy this game, I just don't know when.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is Animal crossing for everyone?
« on: February 22, 2004, 09:01:51 AM »
Is Animal Crossing for everyone? Most definitely not. I'd say gamers that crave constant action, blood, gore, and instant gratification aren't going to like it. But if you are one of the ones that is ends up appealing to, then be prepared to be addicted for a long time.

I'm 31 and bought this game when it came out. I knew I'd like it before I bought it but had no idea how great the game was going to be for me. I played about 4 months straight (almost every day), and then finally kicked the habit for about 2 months. Then, one day I decided to play again and ended up getting hooked again for another 3 or 4 months. I  finally forced myself to quit playing it because I couldn't get any play time in with my other games, it was all going toward AC. I'd buy a new game and then have to play AC for an hour every day before playing my new game.

My wife and daughter both loved it also. I wish the game had a timer that showed how long someone has played because I know I'd be right around 400 hrs. To this day I won't play it because I don't want to become addicted again. However, I consider the greatest game I've ever played and I've been gaming since Atari/Colecovision. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with this franchise although I also dread it too

Yeah, you should have checked Circuit City about two weeks ago as they were having major blowouts on some of their games. While looking for other games, I did see a copy of Skies of Arcadia brand new for $25. I would have picked it up but I already have it. Unfortunately, about 7 or 8 months ago I paid $45 for a used copy.

Well that really can't be done.  It has the name "Star Fox" in the title so obviously it was meant to place the gamer in the Star Fox universe.  Immediately, upon reading the title, gamers will associate it with the past Star Fox games and even, take a deep breath, compare it to them.  An analogy I have to make is Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 2.  Despite the gameplay being very different in 2, everyone was comparing it to 1 noting that they liked 1 better.

So what you are saying is that Mario 64 and Mario Golf have to be compared because they both have the name "Mario" in the title and take place in the Mario universe?

I'm 30 and was lined up at Walmart on midnight of the launch date to get my Jet Black Cube. I only own a GC for this generation and have no problems with finding enough games to keep me playing. I own 25 games and will probably pick up F-Zero this weekend. My favorite games are Animal Crossing and Wind Waker. Lately I've been buying games for $10-20 new through specials on the internet so I'm a little behind in terms of new games. I still need to get Skies of Arcadia and Mario Golf before the onslaught of holiday games hit.

The game is based on the yearly calender. So if you missed the meteor shower last night (Aug 12) you'll just have to wait till next year to see it. Unless of course you cheat and mess with the GC's clock.

Oh, and I can't recommend this game enough either. I bought the game last Sept and I'm still playing nearly every day.

I really think that assumption is wrong. I'd say the GC has just as big a percentage of sports fans as the other consoles. The reason they don't sell as well is because many GC owners also own other systems and as we all know, most of the time when a sports game is released on all 3 systems the PS2 and X-Box games are usually better (more stats, less memory card issues, etc). Not everytime mind you but enough to have already created the perception that it's always true. Not to mention online features which can be a big selling point with sports games.

I bought the GBA Virtua Tennis a couple weeks ago for $10 and let me say I'm pretty impressed. I'm not a big tennis fan as I didn't even know how to keep score until playing Mario Tennis. But this one is pretty fun too. Not only do you play tennis but there are around 8 mini-games that you play through to increase your skills. Most of these are fun little games in themselves.

If you're looking for a cheap but fun GBA title I'd check it out.
