WayForward Hopes for Shantae VC Release
« on: June 22, 2011, 03:26:57 AM »

The saucy half-genie's original adventure may be shakin' it's thing onto the 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26899

WayForward Technologies, developer of smash-hit Shantae: Risky's Revenge on DSiWare, hopes to bring her original Game Boy Color debut back for a second run on the 3DS Virtual Console download service.

While they cannot make any solid promises or confirmations, they announced on their Facebook page that they are "actively pursuing" the re-release and will give new information as soon as they have anything to report.

It is not uncommon to see the original Game Boy Color cart sell for upwards of $300 on eBay, showing that the game is still very high in demand.

Sweet.
It can't be too hard to bring it on the 3DS Virtual Console, right?

I think this is going to be a timing thing.  I seriously doubt we will see GBA games till either next year or Holiday.

Shantae was for GBC. Probably the biggest hurdle is getting Capcom's approval.

This is just an excuse for more Shantae jokes from Zach on the Newscast .

I actually saw this on Facebook while we were recording Newscast last night, and brought it up on the air, so you'll hear about it. EXCITING.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

I never knew the game was so sought-after. $300 is a pretty big exaggeration, but there are two copies on eBay right now which sold for around $165 which is still pretty crazy. Sometimes I wonder how seemingly random games like this become valuable.

Not to be a hater, but the game isn't even that good.  It'll probably be worth whatever the VC price will be, but no way $100+.

@Mop: The game is expensive because it's (1) damn good; and (2) had an incredibly low print run. Like, spectacularly low. It's more a supply & demand problem than a "this game is amazing" problem.

@gojira: You are dead to me. I agree it's not worth $100+, but it's certainly a great game.

The dungeons in the game are great, but the overworld is terrible.  Shantae walks so slow and the enemies pop up right on top of you every two seconds.  It is such a trudge to get from one place to another.

In my opinion the original game was slightly better than Risky's Revenge. Not only was it twice the length but it was much harder, with many more secrets to find. And something about such fluid animation and detail on 8-bit sprites was really impressive. Shantae's dancing was also customizable with appropriate music beats for the different moves, rather than silently cycling through the different stages.
That said, if Risky's Revenge was your cup of tea, you'll probably like this one too.

I thought Risky's Revenge was a serious improvement over the first game.  At least when it comes to the overworld.  The map is kinda useless, but getting from one place to another wasn't a pain.

You can say this about many games that don't sell for anywhere close to the amount of this one.
