Good games tonight.  Although I felt a bit non-communicative with the combination of my crappy xbox headset and not being a super talkative person in general.  Anyway, I should be able to be around for tomorrow as well.

Tomorrow night, 9 PM Eastern, if you'll be there include your XBL handle.

I already posted mine earlier in the thread, but here it is again: broodwars64.  This should be fun.  I haven't played Perfect Dark multi since the N64 days.

I'll repost as well.  gojira1980

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 245: Most Dishonorable

Having played some mutliplayer (mostly challenges and some others for achievements) I do still find it fun.  I haven't played online or against real people.  I've just with bots so far.  I don't really have any gamer friends although I'm hoping to play some with you guys.

This is the type of game that would probably be more fun with friends, but for a game I really want to kick ass and have fun in I kinda feel that Transformers is what I would go with (the only online game I've every really played).  And I'm really looking to the one tied to the new movie because of the online will be a second iteration by the same team that did War for Cybertron's online.

Oh and Maulers are the best pistols.  Secondary fire is an instant kill if you don't have a shield.

Since you can same game setups I found it surprising that Jonny had them written down.  But as was said on the podcast the combat simulator is pretty cumbersome so maybe he missed that part.

Beyond that, there are some gameplay conventions I don't particularly care for these days. One is the running mechanic, where you have to hold a button to run and can't fire your weapon while you do. I feel this does nothing but slow down the gameplay. ... I also can't say I'm a fan of preset loadouts for each individual player, and instead like having a set of six weapons per match. I feel the game is more balanced without every weapon in the game possibly coming into play. Perfect Dark has none of this nonsense and it is a better game for it.

I've been playing some combat challenges and I would kill for a run button at times.  I don't know how many times I looked to the onscreen indicator just to verify that I'm indeed standing up and not crouching because the game can be so slow at times.

Also at least with a preset loadout when you respawn you have some weapons.  I get really upset when I get killed two seconds after respawning.  Or if you're playing somthing like a king of the hill mode you have to waste time gathering up weapons and shields because you know the enemy is going to be fully loaded.

These instances might be different when playing against real people, but so far I've only seen two types of sims.  Meat sims which are a joke and everything else which all seem to be too smart.

So I did find my N64 and copy of Perfect Dark.  With the Hi-rez mode turned on and having hooked the game up to my 42" Plasma with S-Video it looked pretty good.  Obviously not as good as the HD port, and the lower frame rate is noticeable.

I did put a lot of time into the game.  I completed all levels of every weapon on the training mode.  And it looks like what I did was basically play king of the hill like I said.  I even had the weapon setup made for that type of game (laptop gun, dragon).   My team was me and Miyamoto with an alien body against a handful of sims.

I can't really talk too much about it versus other multiplayer shooters since I haven't really played any.  But I felt it was immensely better than Goldeneye due to the added modes, the customization and especially the addition of sims.

And the only modern multiplayer shooter I've played is War for Cybertron.  Which I feel is much better than Perfect Dark.  For one I'm playing against real people.  Also there are different types of characters to choose from.  All which makes each session different.  I'm still playing basically the same king of the hill type mode.  The weapons maybe aren't as interesting since they don't have those dual modes.  But I do enjoy the loadouts, leveling up, streaks and whatnot are now basic in shooters.

I can't talk about Perfect Dark without saying a bit about Goldeneye first.  I'm not a big fan of the FPS genre.  But I did enjoy Goldeneye quite a bit.  I've played through the main game a few times (the first level many times), but I didn't play much of the multiplayer.  I didn't have any friends that were too into games enough to do the 4 player thing more than once a year or so.

So then totally flip that with Perfect Dark.  Other than the first level, I probably only played through the game once.  The game was all about multiplayer for me.  I didn't all of a sudden get gamer friends, but I did make great use of the bots.  I loved playing King of the Hill with a certain loadout of bots and weapons.  I loved the laptop gun and double maulers.  I may dig out my N64 (just moved) and Perfect Dark just to see what my stats were.

Having such great memories of PD I bought the HD port on XBLA right away.  I played through the single player on the lowest level and it was okay.  But I had zero desire to play any multiplayer since I've had so much more fun in other better games recently.  I totally got into Transformers: War for Cybertron last year with the same enthusiasm I had with Perfect Dark back in the day.  I just felt like if I was going to playing multiplayer online it wouldn't be PD since there's nothing really special about it.

We're not asking anyone to replay anything. Since you guys played the campaign so recently, you're highly qualified to comment on that part of the game!

Except for the part that the campaign is so forgettable I'd have to replay it to make a comment.

My gamertag is gojira1980.  I'm also not too sure about replaying the single player since I've just done that a month ago and wasn't too impressed.  Back on the n64 I mostly played "multiplayer" matches solo against bots.  So I don't have much nostalgia for the main game.  Although I may take a stab at an achievement or two.

Having played all of the Bangai-O games I feel Missile Fury is pretty different.  It goes back to the one stage at a time setup of the N64/Dreamcast game(although you can skip levels after losing three times).  But the wacky characters and nonsense story are nowhere to be seen.  Also this game is hard from the beginning.  So far it seems the game is very simplistic in level design.  With the inclusion of a timer and leaderboards I wonder if there will be the complicated levels of the previous games.

The biggest change is in the basic gameplay.  Dashing seems to be a bigger deal.  Also there's this freeze move that I don't think has been in previous Bangai-O games.  My consoles are currently packed up since I'm moving so I can't double check to see if these are new.  But having played a lot of the original games and all of the DS game I know this game isn't played exactly like them.

Oh, and bosses have never been much of a big deal in the Bangai-O games.  A lot are jokes in the original game.  The others are mostly built to pump out as many missiles as possible.  So they themselves are not that impressive.

Mega Man 2 is the easiest overall. Find an E-tank (Flash Man's stage is good for that), then use it to beat Metal Man. You'll get the Metal Blade, which wrecks everything in the game, fires in eight directions, and uses almost no weapon energy.

Wow, an original Mega Man I might actually be able to beat.

86
I love Pikmin, but does the "remake" really add much? The controls were fine in the first place, and I don't think there are any other differences.

I think the pointer controls vastly improve the game.  But then again I generally dislike controlling an onscreen cursor with an analog stick.

Also it's not like Beyond Good and Evil HD added anything other than achievements.  The same goes for the campaign in the Perfect Dark remake.  So I would say Pikmin on Wii has a much more fundamental change over the original version than the games chosen.

I'm not one for online multiplayer (with the exception of last year's Transformers game).  But if Perfect Dark did win, it would be interesting playing some games with everyone here.

87
I went with Banjo Tooie mostly because it's the only game on the list I haven't played.  I also purchased the Beyond Good and Evil & Perfect Dark HD remakes or whatever you want to call them.  And I don't think either game is all that good anymore.

I also own Disgaea, Phantom Brave and La Pucelle Tactics and haven't played any of them.

Oh, so enjoy the next 2000 hours of gameplay.

Yeah, and I still gotta get through Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.  I was making progress in that game until the Ogre Battle 64 RetroActive.  That kinda took the desire out of me to play such long games.  But if they were on my DS I'd probably have gone through all of them by now.  I mean I have played through Pokemon Platinum and Pokemon Silver in the last few months.

I've been playing Okamiden for quite a while now and the lag to bring up the celestial brush is there, but it's not really noticeable unless you're doing a lot of drawing in a row.  Most of the time you'll do a slash or a bloom here and there.  And the time it takes to bring your hand from holding the DS to readying the stylus on the touch screen is about the same time it takes for the top screen to drop to the bottom.  However there parts like in the demo where a lot of drawing is required, like when you're directing a character while keeping enemies away, but I wouldn't say you do it enough to be bothered by the lag.

And I'll admit that I'm even worse off than Lindy when it comes to Chrono Trigger.  I own two copies of the game.  The PSone version of which I got frustrated with the loading times and never got to far.  And a SNES copy I inherited from my little brother (yes my younger brother) after he grew out of his SNES.   But I've never made it more than a few hours into either version.

PM me if you add me.

I got 100% on the free flight mode.  It's funny how the last ones are seemingly always in places you've been through 100 times before.  They're just on the side of the thing you never go to the side of.

The move deleter was definitely added in Silver.  Because I had taught my Mewtwo strength.   :-[   And I was able to transfer him over to silver to have him forget it

I have to disagree a bit with Jonny about being able to play Pokemon wrong.  With the inclusion of the move deleter, the move relearner and the option to buy many of the best moves in the game you can fix any goof you might have made.  And as someone mentioned earlier, you can see the stats of a new move.

Because of this I always play Pokemon 99% of the way through just using the ones I think look cute or cool or whatever.  Once I get to the Elite 4 then I usually need to look to the web to tweak my team a bit.

Random thoughts after listening to the episode.

Unfortunately Okamiden doesn't control any better with the circle pad.  And with the placement of the stylus, I prefer playing the game on my DSi.  It looked fine on the 3DS however.

It's been years since I played Megaman X, but I don't recall it being particularly difficult.  I've never beaten a mainline Megaman game, but I beat that game no problem.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: best n64 game and why
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:38:18 PM »
I love the N64.  The best game isn't that interesting of a question since it's mostly going to be Mario 64 or Ocarina (Mario for me).  But there are a lot of games I really loved and played to death.  Since I just got done playing Ogre Battle 64 for RetroActive I decided to pop in a few other n64 games for fun.

I played through Extreme-G through completion for the millionth time.  I freaken love that game and the sequel never hit that nerve.  However, XG3 is amazing.  And I would even argue that it is better than F-Zero GX.  But I know I'm probably the only person with that opinion.

I could probably talk up all the games I own for N64.  Even though I bought a playstation because of the lack of certain genres on the system, I still enjoyed it until the end.

98
I think 60 is bad end.

Nah, there's a Pretty Good end between 30 and 60.  Things end pretty happily for all involved, and the sequel gets set up as much as in either of the other endings.  So he's only 29 away from not completely screwing over the country.

But I did get to see the baby crawling out from under the dead woman.  Or is that in all the endings?

99
Apparently.  They kept telling me all I cared about was winning battles.

100
I finished the game.

Chaos Frame: 1 pt (and obviously the worst ending).
662 days (one birthday, should've been two but they skipped over my first one).
75+ hours (half of that was probably spent in the organization screen).

The game wasn't that difficult overall.  I'd say my experience with many other strategy games and the time spent in the organization screen played a big role in that.

But wow those hours.  I listened to many many podcasts and an audible book or two.  I even spent some time fixing up a n64 controller I kinda broke in a fit of rage.

Having shunned this game for so long it's funny it's now a game I really enjoy.  It's not my favorite strategy game, but it feels like the most replayable.  So I can see why it has been played multiple times by people.
