Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #22 Poll: WiiWare Edition

I own FAST, so I would comment on that game if it would win.

I played the demo for MotoHeroz.  It seemed like a fun game, so I would maybe pick it up.  But it seems like a much more fun multiplayer game, which is a mode I would never play.

From what I've seen of escapeVektor I'm not that interested.

Since I can't vote for 'not escapeVektor', I don't think I'll vote.  I'll just see what wins and decide then.

Don't regret playing for a second and would happily recommend the game, but just wish it was something that could draw me back for more instead of getting a single-play-through experience.
 :D

I played through the game's main story and that was enough for me.  But I think I remember the game having challenge maps or something like that.  Have you played those?

The dual system seems cool.  It sounds like it'll work like Pegasus' Triangle Attack from previous Fire Emblem games.

I'm really looking forward to Resident Evil.  I love the old school ones.  I'm sure it helped that I played them when they came out though.

When it comes to Fire Emblem, I also do not understand the people who say you have to restart if you lose any character.  Overall the game gives you more characters than you can use on any given mission.  That being said I restarted a lot on my play throughs of the series.  I'll keep going if I lose some characters, but I don't like letting my favorites die.  And unfortunately I always have a weak spot for Pegasi.

I thought of another one while I was at work today.  Shining Force 3.  Didn't one of those make it West?  I know there was three of them in Japan.

Oh yeah Mass Effect.  I still need to play 2.  I'm not a huge RPG fan, but I liked the first game.

I think I own 90% of the bucket games mentioned on this podcast.  And I actually just purchased Solar Jetman a few months ago.  I keep a bucket list of my own and buy a few every year or so.  I have a pretty big list but I'll post a few highlights here.

NES - Vice: Project Doom
SNES - The Adventures of Batman and Robin
Gameboy - Ninja Gaiden: Shadow
Virtual Boy - Mario Clash
N64 - Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
PSone - R-Type Delta
Dreamcast - Sword of the Berserk
PS2 - Ico
Gamecube - Baten Kaitos: Origins
Wii - Dead Space: Extraction
PS3(which I don't own) - Uncharted series, Valkyria Chronicles

The games I feel most guilty about not playing from that list are the most recent ones.  I loved the Dead Space games and I enjoyed what I played of Extraction when I rented it, but I just haven't gotten around to buying it.  And Baten Kaitos: Origins came out like a month before the Wii so I was saving my money at the time.  But I really liked the first game so it's one I still want to play.

So, for those of us that like this game and are interested in more, any other Fire Emblem or non-Fire Emblem games that the experts here could suggest?  This and Civ IV have really revved up my strategy game itch.

Well I gushed about the Gamecube and Wii games earlier in this thread.  I also very much enjoyed the first Fire Emblem game on Gameboy Advance.  The DS one is interesting since it's a remake of the very first FE game.  But it had prerendered sprites instead of hand drawn ones.  So the game has much less character.  But if you turn off battle animations anyway it probably doesn't matter.

For non-FE games the Advance Wars games are great.  I also like the Final Fantasy Tactics series and Tactics Ogre.  A little bit older, but still very good are the Shining Force games.

I have Bionic Commando for the old GameBoy and I got exactly to that part Greg was talking about before I couldn't get any further.  The save state feature is almost reason enough for me to re-buy the game (it is out in NA btw).

I loved and still love Maximum Velocity.  I appreciate that it's the only other F-Zero game to use the original's boost system which I prefer to what was introduced in F-Zero X.  However, I also agree that the SNES game was superior.  I loved taking a good approach on a turn then leaning into it and hitting the brakes until the right moment when you would accelerate again.  Taking a good approach is still necessary in MV, but because of the tapping you generally don't need to slow down.  Leaning isn't as necessary either, but it still helps.  BTW, tapping the accelerator in the SNES game works as a valid mechanic to take turns as well.  It's just that the game wasn't designed around it so it isn't necessary like in MV.

The other GBA F-Zero does have tapping, but it also has the boost/health mechanic from X/GX.  If it wasn't for that I'd say it's the better of the two F-Zero games that made it West since it was otherwise an improvement over MV.  I don't know if the third F-Zero on GBA was any good, but it did have a track editor.  That makes both F-Zeros with track editors Japan only.  The other being the 64DD expansion for F-Zero X.

Beat the game.  I could tell I played well because I had no real problems with the final levels.  I even dominated the 'survival' level.  I had a handful of supports at level B at the end.  I wish I got them to A before beating the game.  However it makes me want to replay to get those.  Also I kinda want to play again to level up other characters.

I really liked the GBA games, but I really think Path of Radiance (the GameCube game) is the best I've played.  I haven't finished Radiant Dawn (the Wii game) yet, but so far I like it slightly less than the one on GC.  I really like all the characters (Nephenee!) and it introduced some new gameplay tweaks.

First is the ability to save mid-battle.  The Wii version later allowed for saves at any time.  But even the ability to save at some point during a fight made late battle losses easier to bear.

Also they introduced bonus experience.  Instead of worrying about grinding or babying healers you could award them exp.  You get bonus exp by playing well (i.e. fast battles, saving npcs).

Characters automatically promote at level 21.  No need for items unless you want to promote earlier.

Support increases by battling together not standing next to each other.  So characters aren't handcuffed together if you want to raise their support.  Also the conversations take place between battles, so you don't waste a move by talking.

I also liked the Skill system.  It allowed you to assign characters certain special abilities.

The only problem with these games is that they are on a console.  For some reason I find it so much easier to play this type of game on a portable.  I've been playing Sacred Stones until by battery dies, meanwhile I haven't touched Radiant Dawn (the Wii game) in forever.

And that is why I hate strategy RPGs, the silent death that is incorrect leveling. You don't notice it until it's too late to fix.

It's funny how SRPGs tend to be very long games.  Yet a lot of them are designed to be replayed multiple times.  Even if you do use some characters to level 'incorrectly'.  You'll still be able to beat the game.  And the next time you play you'll level up different characters.  That's why I enjoy replaying these types of games.

@Ceric - You need an item to promote every character.  Except the trainees, but they start at a sub level so that doesn't really count.

Which is annoying because I have characters I want to promote but don't have the item for it.

@Ceric - give your healers (actually all your characters) healing items like vulneraries to heal themselves.  Although I agree it is stupid they can't heal themselves with rods.

The Sacred Stones wasn't the first SRPG I ever played, but it was one of the earlier ones.  I've never really liked the permanent death in this series.  I've always thought the original Final Fantasy Tactics had a better setup.  In that game when someone dies you have something like three turns to revive them and then they die forever.  There's still permanent death, but you don't have to restart a whole level just because some character dies at the end of a battle.  However, outside of that feature I've really loved the games.

Probably my favorite aspect of these games are the characters.  The beautiful sprite animation is worth watching even after seeing it over and over again.  Also there's something always satisfying about seeing your characters change class.  I also tend to cherish the characters with unique sprites.  In this game I even choose character's classes by the look of their sprite.  I also tend to battle using characters based on their design over their abilities/strengths.

One feature I never really utilized until later games is placing characters next to each other to form support links.  Not only does it give extra character information, but it also makes your characters better in battle.  It's something I try to take advantage of as much as possible.

And I also want to note that a lot of the issues people bring up with this game are improved upon in later games.

I'm happy Fire Emblem won.  As I said before I don't think either of the other two games are very good.  And I've already played a significant amount of Sacred Stones in the last month.

I found Mighty Switch Force to be kind of disappointing.  I read the reviews saying it was much better than the previous games.  And the video on the eShop looked amazing.  But I don't think it's any better.  It's nicer looking, but I basically agree with Jonny and don't think they really take the basic premise anywhere interesting.  I was also kinda hoping it would be more of a 'real' game like Shantae.

You actually didn't need to have a memory card just for Animal Crossing if you bought a higher capacity one.  So I never had to bother switching memory cards when I played the game.  Also if more than one person in your house played the game they all played in the same village.  So you didn't need to worry about multiple cards either.  Unless everyone wanted to have their own town.  But the game is so much more fun when you share a town.  That being said, I totally agree with AC being like a quick load app.

I have a few problems with SwapNote.  You should be able to reply to own note.  I also don't like how you can only reply with the basic setup.  It would be nice to select stationery or reply with a picture.

I don't find Kirby games to be any fun.  I also think that Wario 4 is one of the weakest in the series.  So I vote for Fire Emblem.  Although I'll probably just talk about how much better the Gamecube game is.

Fire Emblem is very character driven.  I can see Nintendo selling DLC packs of characters from previous games.  I'll take Nephenee please.

The Varia Suit was technically in the first Metroid.  But it was just a color swap for Samus' sprite.  Without colors on the Gameboy they had to actually change Samus' sprite to show she got a more powerful suit.  So while the Varia Suite in name didn't originate in Metroid 2, the actual look of what the Suit has become did.

Also I finished the game for the millionth time and got a time of 1:50.  There was just one point where I missed a Metroid and had to retrack back a bit into a level.

Metroid 2 was my first Metroid game.  It totally sparked my love of the series.  When I was a kid I had no problem spending hours looking around the caverns of SR388.  Even when I play today I can still remember where everything is.  So I have no need for a map.  I still love playing through the game today.

Wow, I haven't seen aiming this sluggish since the last time I plugged in my Playstation Move.  Why did Nintendo decide to only use MotionPlus for the aiming, when the Wii's most consistent strength has been the speed of its pointer control?

I'm also confused as to why Nintendo had to go with save points when you can save whenever you want in Xenoblade and previous Zelda games (though in those games, you were taken back to the beginning of the dungeon.

I felt the same way about the pointer controls with the menus.  But with actual weapons it felt better.  It's not terrible, but I just finished Twilight Princess a second time a couple of hours before playing Skyward Sword so it's definitely noticeable.

The other reason Nintendo may have decided to have specific save spots could be because of the glitches in Twilight Princess due to being able to save anywhere.

Also I definitely enjoy the little improvements over TP.  The sprint button, being able to run up a wall a little bit.  You can quickly crawl and climb.  Even the standard vine climbing has been improved.  I was curious how they would make the nunchuck work since it hasn't been improved.  But moving the spin attack to both controllers freed up the shield thrust to be the only nunchuck motion move.  And that made both moves a million times easier to pull off.

I picked up my copy from Target since I had to buy a few things from there anyway.  The clerk had to go to the back to get more.  So I guess it's selling well.

After a bunch of issues in the past I only preorder on Amazon if I'm going to do one day shipping (or release day for 99ยข on Arkham City).  They send out the orders based on what delivery service you asked for.  So if you order one day, they send it out right away.  But if you choose free shipping they don't even send it out until the end of the week.

I'm just going to say I don't really like this game.  I love brawlers like the Ninja Turtles games and Double Dragon.  When it comes to these types of games I want an eventful ride through cool levels.  The characters and locations are pretty bland and the whole grinding aspect is a turn off for me.

I recently played through Arkham City and I think the WiiU controller would actually make a lot of the side quest stuff pretty cool.  It would be interesting if Greg played the game with the WiiU port in mind since for some reason it never occurred to me while I was playing the game.
