TalkBack / Re: Wii Sports Unboxing
« on: July 23, 2009, 08:06:45 AM »
Having blasted away at this for a few hours last weekend, I survived fine without the jacket. If you're be the type to smash a remote into furniture or TV, you might consider it.

Also, the game is just tiring. Paddling, cycling, Pilotwings Pilotwings some flying ****, faceplants into the water waterskiing. You've probably all seen it before, but I'll never tire of shouting "That's a paddling" during races.

Particularly the cycling. It throws the opponents.

3.) Go with Wireless N, a 5Ghz draft 2 version that can be kinda expensive and unecessary, and is still using un-standardized specs. meaning future Wireless N products may not be fully compatible.

I found a good B/G/N router for AU$140 (Linksys) over six months ago. Don't let the "Draft 2" spec worry you - aside from one driver issue with Vista, it's working perfectly.

Massive throughput gains over G. Better coverage (multiple antennae). And its becoming a standard feature with laptops too. Any changes between now and the finalization of the standard will be backwards compatible with existing hardware.

I have Ubuntu 8, but not 9..i need to make a new bootdisk.

Back it all up and start over. Don't worry about cleaning it up because it sounds like you've got an entrenched bit of malware.

*sits in corners with knees to chest, rocking back and forth*

These days you don't even need root access to do some nasty stuff. The really scary stuff is coming in through the web browser - as what happened to Perm, he was the victim of a drive-by-download attack. Didn't need any user interaction, didn't trigger any admin warnings or prompts. It just used an exploit in IE7 (it may not be, but my money's on that) to install something to a protected directory and BAM, compromised machine.

Pro Tip: Firefox + AdBlock + NoScript. Seriously, protect yourself out there.

Visiting random sites is also a quick and easy way to get infected with something random.

And make sure the way you back it up is secure so any viruses do not spread.

Put it onto a secondary drive. Nuke it. Reinstall and setup antivirus and install those system updates and patches. THEN (and only then) do you even consider bringing over your files.

If this were on my pATA drive, i could just fix it from linux by deleting all windows directories, like documents and settings, program files, and windows. What i worry about is where else is this thing stored. I stuck a sd card in my dads computer and the thing had a file name Belkinblahblah.exe for the virus, luckily that computer is solidly protected and AVG caught it before it was a problem. I would have had my AVG on, but i have to turn it off to run certain programs. Anyhow so i caught the virus. I'm wondiering if its possible for the virus to install itself on my wireless G belkin thumb adapter. Its not a storage drive, but im wondering if the virus can install itself on the firmware with a redirect for AVG.

1. 90% of the time, once malware has root access, it'll bury itself in a combination of places - the most common that I've dealt with is "C:\Windows\System32" and "C:\Program Files\*some application name*".

2. Ugh. Not that I have the full story, but antivirus isn't a _sometimes_ thing. You never appreciate it until you realise you weren't using it.

3. To perform a firmware update (lets say he wanted to prevent USB wireless dongles from being used to surf to AV sites), the malware guy would need to have a modified-but-still-working firmware available for each possible chipset/manufacturer/device combination. He may target only your device chipset, but the cost-benefit ratio is heavily weighted in the cost category. If I were a bad guy it'd be easier to monitor network activity at the kernel level and block your AV attempts there (and I don't have to worry about targeting the underlying hardware). Much less effort for much more benefit.

You had me at mohawk.

But seriously, at what point do you play the "reboot card" and go in a new direction? Sure, Wind Waker hinted at that - and got bagged because of it but I think its about time to try something new.

Uh-oh, serious territory. Time for Funhouse derailment.

Oh yeah, don't ask me about Toilet Princess. I think I got a glitched PAL disc because I left Link in some dungeon because we couldn't be bothered finishing some puzzle. It was totally mutual though. I never finished the game, but it smacked of the whole same story (aside from defending that carridge mission, that was pretty rad). Sure, some people get off on riding horses around the countryside for 20 hours, and power to them for that.

But to the rest of us, something's gotta change. And not something trivial...

The episode where the Simpsons go to Australia... CHUZWAZZA

Dasmos: Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'd have made her put her number into my phone, that way I remove the "short-term memory loss" risk because if she calls back, I play dumb.

Hulu is useless because its americans only. And now they have BRITISH CONTENT on there.... for americans only.

how can they region lock a website ?

IP Address lookup - blocks of addresses map to countries and then ISPs within that country, so its a fairly quick approximation but works in most cases.

Let us dive down the rabbit hole that is gaming down under, before it has a cardiac arrest and the next of kin takes the throne and ... I didn't actually have a point to all this, so I'm going to move on.

The whole bloody thing is here: http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/article/300491/hardcore_gaming_isn_t_dying_--_it_already_dead but I know you guys want the choice bits.

Quote
One day, you’re happily swanning about in flannel shirts or cargo pants, the next; your favourite trend is yesterday’s fading fad.

Apologies if this guy is stating the obvious to you, dear Reader. I want to hit him in the back of the head for mentioning flannel (which was only popular for Billy Ray, and if you were following Billy Ray back in the day you were a sad, sad person).

Quote
In the context of this article, the phrase refers to all types of gaming other than the ‘casual/party’ genre... which just so happens to be the cause of hardcore gaming's demise.

Uh-oh, I smell an axe grinding. I think someone might have been playing Wii Sports on his lawn (chasing a really long return, perhaps?) and he's snapped.

Quote
As much as games journalists refuse to admit it, hardcore gaming is definitely on the wane, to be replaced by its simpler, party-prone brother (i.e. the other ‘C’ word.)

I don't profess to know everything about everything, but I know here he's talking about **** gaming - the bastard cousin of casual gaming. **** gaming always shows up to the party uninvited, and you're never been able to work out how anyone of your circle of friends knows him, but its always a laugh when he passes out in a bush.

Quote
The sales figures speak for themselves. According to GFK Australia, nine of the 10 best-selling games in 2008 were Nintendo exclusives. Almost all of these were party/casual games, with the top slot held by Wii Fit.

This is ridiculous. I don't want to live in a world where Wii Fit is the best of anything.

Quote
The only non-Nintendo title to break into the top 10 was GTA IV — which only managed to place fifth. Given the hysterical press coverage that game’s sales figures received, you’d expect it to be ranked much higher.

Go **** a doorknob. GTA's release wasn't hysterical anywhere - I'm almost certain the sales figures will show the first week was subpar save for the millions wasted on PR, but lets not go into the realm of fact.

Such is the clout of the Nu N-Gamer.

Wow, how long did it take for them to think that up? I hope they didn't lose sleep over it, because it is a totally ghetto name. Slap a casual group with a nickname straight out of a late-90s-sounding-which-wasn't-even-a-good-hip-hop-era-sounding name and pat yourself on the back.

Quote
While they still pay lip-service to the hardcore contingent, both companies are gagging to emulate Nintendo’s runaway success. They want in on the Nintendo gravy train, and hardcore gaming is about to take a backseat as a consequence.

More head-belting-because-its-so-obvious remarks would go here, but I can't be arsed.

Quote
“We’re moving on now... to look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises. There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.”

Thanks for the tip, Sony rep. You've done Buzz to death, but what else is there? Ratchet and Clank - nope, that's already bombed. Prince of Persia - oh right, not even yours. I'm struggling here, and perhaps he is too becaus he doesn't mention any specific titles. ("We're starting it tomorrow! Seriously! We'll have it on the shelves by Friday!")

Oh, and if they put out another infernal Motorstorm game (hanging out for a real Bonestorm title so I can chant those immortal lines at every game store I can find until I am banned from them all) I am just going to snap.

Quote
With the exception of Final Fantasy XIII and the usual brigade of samey sequels, there are few Triple A titles on the immediate horizon.

This is the point where I reached for a drink to tolerate the stupidity. Triple A titles don't happen overnight, dipshit. And we know third parties are still falling over themselves finding excuses to stall and make shitty titles in general.

But do you know who's to blame for this "sequel overload" that's been happening for the last few generations? Hardcore gamer culture. The Madden-esque vicious cycle of the same game being tweaked (I'm being nice here, they could be lazy and just change the player names and/or race each year), increment the number on the front, and sell a boatload to a willing audience.

Of course, I can hear the retorts now - "I'm not one of those fans! I only buy the good titles! I heart Square!" Oh, so you're an elitist hardcore gamer? Doesn't matter. If you didn't buy Madden I'm betting you lined up for MGS4 on day one. Same ****, different day.

I'm actually talking to no-one in particular, but think about how many games in your library have a number or a year next to it (and no, PNO3 doesn't count, but you should shut up for different reasons) before you claim to demand quality games. And don't give me this "good franchises are good franchises" argument, because I played through BG&E again last week and it was probably the most fun I've had with a game in the past couple of years.

And don't even get me started about FFXIII - that basket case of a game won't make 2009 anywhere.

Quote
Mark our words, the PS4 and XBox 720 will have full-blown motion control schemes — and hardcore gaming can only suffer as a result.

Ho ho ho! Such rage, such insight.

Let me put it this way - both of them won't have "full-blown motion control schemes" next gen. Remember the Sixaxis? Remember Lair? Of course you do. Think real hard about whether they can get the combination of hardware and software just right, so that you don't get devs complaining about shitty platforms and gamers complaining about shitty products. You still reckon they'll both do it?

Meanwhile EA is complaining about the MotionPlus being too accurate (uh, unless I misheard Bill or Mario, I can't even remember my source on that), technology that is available here and now and gaining traction (I'll still call it waggle, I don't care about being cool anymore).

Quote
It's time to welcome our Nu N-Gamer overlords.

At this point I can't help but conjure a mental picture of Yamauchi crossed with that Thriller clip. Combine that narrator talking about hardcore gamers roaming downtown Tokyo and after the "plot" of the movie is done the next hour or so is Yamauchi strangling prostitutes with a Wii nunchuck. I think it could be a decent movie.

So if Joe Blogger is already predicting doom, are we past the point of no return? Is there no way back to a world where gaming is an anti-social habit? Or does the hardcore gamer have to grab their ankles and think of happy things while casual gaming has its way with the industry.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just a angry guy at a keyboard. I have less merit than the guy in the original article (unless he doesn't get paid for it, in which case I like to think I'm better than him).

How many people here do website stuff as a profession? Seems to be quite a few of us in relation to the number of people in the forum.

.NET guy (started on ASP.NET actually).

I make a living off of designing websites. Is it wise to start up a site that sells stuff? Who knows? It could be, but you need to have a hook. It HAS to stand out from everyone else who does the same thing.
If you do a partnership, put everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on paper. From who controls what, who makes what types of decisions, to what work is expected from each and if there is a mess up what the consequences are. Beyond that, go for it. You might make a buck or two.

Gotta agree with all this here. Make sure whatever terms you agree to are clearly defined BEFORE you start any sort of partnership. Be clear on what happens whether the partnership is successful or not.

also, i noticed my hd is on sata4. Does it matter which port its on for linux? Should i unplug it out of 4 and put it on 1?

Not unless the installer is having issues with detecting your hard drive. Most modern motherboards are able to boot from hard drives in whatever order you like (rather than the order of the port numbers) so that fact that A is plugged into B shouldn't matter unless you're seeing something specific (like, no hard drives available).

As for the motherboard itself:
This guy had some issues with getting the graphics working

one of my biggest problems right now is there aren't compatible drivers for my motherboard and hard drive..they're sort of weird. Its not likely there will be either.

Hard drives are pretty standard these days, so my gut feeling is that there's something funky on your mobo that is causing the issue. Got any specs on it to find out whether others are suffering from the problem?

Which is too bad. so every time I log in its like ground hogs day. I have to set up my wireless network each time(which mysteriously didnt work in the 64 bit version, but worked in the 32 bit version). Then i have to set up pidgin and the flash browser for firefox. Other than those problems i have no problem using the computer for minimal operations.

Ugh, how annoying. I'd be getting pretty pissed if I had to do that every damn time. Seems strange to have it remember some things (installed apps) but not configuration information. For anyone who is curious about what this involves, here's a quick guide (seriously, its that short) to do this with Ubuntu 8.10.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-810-install-using-the-built-in-usb-installer/

Can you imagine if computers were setup with those internally as well as externally.

I smell a bottlenecks discussion. But that's for another day...

I feel like something is recording everything I type!

No I'm not! [/sarcasm]

A couple of tips for everyone:

A quick way to see if your system is compromised is available here: http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html

What this is doing is requesting images from known antivirus sites. Conficker is actively blocking access to these sites so that victims cannot download antivirus updates. So no images means you're probably infected. Note that the inverse (you can see the images, so you're all clear) is not true - you should definitely get your hands on a cleanup tool and ensure that you're in the clear.

Here's a link to a cleanup tool which should get around the virus blocking attempts - its a tech site rather than a vendor: http://majorgeeks.com/download6158.html

Any other questions?

i remember way back in the day when Grey Ninja told everyone to switch to Firefox than titled Firebird.

It was the shiznit then and (aside from a few bumps in the road) it still is now.

I get so pissed when i have to use IE. I even get mad when i see others use IE. Now I'm trying to switched to Linux on Grey's orders(and cus my comptuer is infected), but its not as seemless as switching from ie to firefox.

Do what I did whenever I had to cleanup a computer after IE had introduced crap (I don't care how innocent people claim to be when this happens, stop doing stupid things on the internet). Remove the icon from the desktop and the start menu. It'll cut down on 99% of IE usage. Make it hard to get to. In this day and age, if a website mandates IE usage, they deserve to be lambasted for it.

As for Linux, its not a silver bullet which will make all your computer problems go away. Its a completely different paradigm (sure, you can get window managers which can look like Windows/Mac but underneath its a very different beast) and it can pretty bloody daunting initially - it was when I first had a go at Red Hat 6 (I think) years ago.

My advice: Start on an easy Linux distro. Ubuntu, Fedora or OpenSUSE have nice installers and support both major window managers (so you can install both and jump between the two until you find the one you like). Install it on a spare system if you can so that you can get stuff done if things go bad. Pplay around with it, learn how to do things like installing software, performing updates, customising the window manager and apps. Learn the things that are important to Linux - the filesystem setup, the command prompt, configuring update repositories, boot process, I could go on and on about this.

Most importantly, find out about what breaks and find the fixes for it - Google is your friend in this regard, and Ubuntu has a huge community with tips that you can apply to most other distros. If you've got a computer that is 12 months old or so, you shouldn't encounter any hardware issues (Wireless cards and some graphics cards are sometimes not recognised or not supported, but this is improving compared to how its been in the past) Get it to a point where you're happy with it, and make sure you've noted the key things you needed to do (URLs, steps, whatever) to get to that point.

Then, once you're feeling confident, make a list of the things you need to install, nuke it and start fresh. You don't need to know how to compile a kernel, but once you get a hang of the basics you'll appreciate the control that some of the Linux distributions offer (Arch Linux is still my favourite, and I used that as my sole OS for about 18 months at one point, but its been a while since I've been on that bandwagon).

TalkBack / Re: Happy 10th Birthday, Nintendo World Report!
« on: March 17, 2009, 09:07:41 AM »
One thing that stuck out with me was the Aussie(and token New Zealander, you know who you are...) population in the forums when I joined. I didn't know they even had Nintendo down there... :P

You have no idea how terrible it was during those lean years to be a Nintendo fan - it was just one long-running joke about Nintendo's Australian branch, which we were convinced was just an empty building that made them look like they cared.

BLOODY NAL!

As for the Aussie reputation on the forum, I don't think it was a "large group" rather than a small-but-loud-and-troublesome group that made us stand out from the others back in those busy days. A fair few gravitated towards that initial thread, but there were probably less than 10 that lasted any significant amount of time on the site (speaking of missing people, whatever happened to Uncle Rich AiAi?). Its here for anyone who can't operate the search functionality.

There was a follow-up attempt here which didn't even make 1000 posts, and then there was the super-secret Aussie board which had a lot of cool stuff (but has probably disappeared like Rick's secret wrestling forum). And then the special treatment kind of disappeared - they were probably sick of treating us like a protected species ("We ride kangaroos to school. What, you don't?") when we were probably more troublesome than anything.

But its been fun - the bannings and skirmishes with authorities, the arguments that somehow degenerated into photoshopping insults, T8's official PGC report at the Pokemon event, someone demonstrating how borked the old forums were, the Mafia games (I still owe RAB a backstab for killing his teammate with the worst Day 1 bandwagon I've ever seen - who'd have thought people cared about Pittboi), and so on and so forth.

Games? I think we did talk about games once or twice. Really! Its been a blast anyway!

But in the end its just the usual third-party-treatment disappointment.

24
I wasn't aware new Mario Kart and Smash Bros games were coming out next year Shift Key. Glad I'll be able to use basic online features like voice chat with them next year.

I see what you did there! And with such wit. I am humbled by your wordsmanship.

See that? Two can play at the sarcasm game, wise guy. For the record, voice chat on XBL has given me the opportunity to endure trash-talking from teenagers who demonstrate limited vocabularies (and who do not appreciate the fine insults like "miserable toerag"). I can't wait for that sort of experience to come to the Wii. Oh damn, you caught me. Sarcasm again!

For all I care, AC can be the only game that uses it, and there will be much rejoicing because the teenage girls playing it will love it and I'll be elsewhere, not caring about voice chat. Because I prefer multiplayer games with people in the same room - it makes victory snatched from the jaws of defeat all the sweeter when the losers can't mute my celebratory cussing.

I said on this front not in general Shift Key can you read? Yes Sony and Microsoft have made bad choices in other areas that doesn't mean it nullifies Nintendo's.

Au contraire, my funnily-named friend. You're skewing the playing field in favour of what I consider to be a minor thing. If we consider this as one situation (and not several fronts, this isn't Normandy) then the sins of the gaming outweigh the sins of the firmware.

However both of Nintendo's competitors have gone with the more sensible option of an open system they have change and improve at any time. So it's fair game to criticise Nintendo for doing a worse job.

Dear me, you haven't been paying attention. Still can't see the trees for the forest.

Sure, in bizarro world where "open systems" matter and games don't, the others might be winning in terms of third-part support, marketshare, revenue, moneyhats, rap battles, whatever metric matters to the precious industry. But this is the vidya game industry, and any and all criticisms should be weighted up against that simple measuring stick.

Does it change my gaming experience for the better? This isn't simply a contest of "haves" and "have-nots". I consider firmware to be a moot point in all this - pretty colours and shiny things given to distract people from the fact that they're not playing vidya games. Perhaps you think differently, but I remember the days when the firmware was so basic that they NEVER UPDATED IT, and the only time spent using the console without playing vidya games was the few seconds when you watched the loading screens pass.

But no, these days I've got to go through bloody menu systems three deep in order to get to the actual game, and woe betide any time I need to change the configuration of the system, because then i'll have to go through an illogical menu system to do simple things like changing screen resolutions. And even though we've moved to disc-based media and faster processors and more memory (damn you Moore, you'll pay for this), we've got MORE ingame loading and MORE company graphics before the title distracting from the actual vidya games.

But having complex firmware that can change at will, that's a good thing? No, its not. Its symptomatic of components of the industry focusing on things other than the games. I'm sure I've taken you way out of context, but you seem to be a broken record that Nintendo is responsible for some dud firmware. So jump in and correct me, I can't wait for your next rambling post.

25
So Nintendo has implemented things in such a way as to make offering some simple things to their customers impossible.

Their two competitors have avoided this problem and have served their customers better on this front.

but because it doesn't surprise Shift Key that makes it alright.

Glad that is sorted.

I find this response hilarious. Who are you again? Nevermind, I don't have time for your life story. Lets get down to the brass tacks.

1) Enlighten me to these "simple things" which are simply impossible to achieve. Aside from it being a games console, everything else is an addon to the core. Storage, features, patches, free ****. Its merely decoration to the simple fact that you bought the console to play games - most likely Nintendo games. The fact that people run around saying "X* is wrong with the Wii", but the majority think that X as a non-issue - and I've got the sales data to prove this, what have you go? -  is a good indicator that some people can't see the forest for the trees. And this effect is magnified by the vocal minority, who carry a chip on their shoulder and their own soapbox so that they can spew this nonsense, at every opportunity, in the general direction of anyone who might care.

* Put in your own value for X - there's a laundry list of things in this thread alone that can go there. Think back to the start. Think back to E3. Remember everything that people complained about? Good times, weren't they? Let the nostalgia envelop you. We can wait...

All good? Next point.

2) How can you say with a straight face that the others "served their customers better" ? Are you choosing to ignore that drawn out RROD debacle - which it turned out was by design and far from an isolated problem - and Sony screwing up the backwards compatibility with challenger number 3?

I got rid of my PS2 before the Wii came out, and was planning to get a PS3 at some stage, but now they've managed to turn me off completely and so my large PS2 library sits at home, unplayed. And I've been meaning to get a 360 for ages, but even now I find that easier to put off despite the guarantee around replacing my console if it breaks. Hah, if.

Of course, I'm only a potential customer to "the others" (not even a real statistic, I know), but its **** like that that makes me glad I've got a simple console to play when the urge hits. I don't need to worry about ensuring that my console is correctly ventilated (or the fact that IF I POSITION IT UPRIGHT I'M BASICALLY ASKING FOR IT TO SCRATCH MY DISCS) or that my copy of "INSERT OBSCURE PS2 TITLE" here may or may not play on my lobotomised PAL console - its like a game of chance, except I already lost my winnings on the griller prize and am subjected to play this game for all eternity.

I think I'm going to punch the next person who says "next-gen console" to my face - that term annoys me so, and not just for the undertones that "Its a machine from the future! and its here! Today! What's your excuse, lamer?"

3) I am not an oracle or a witch or a seer to the future. I'm just a guy who's seen this **** before. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. If you think complaining on a forum about this stuff is going to fix it, you've got a lot to learn. But of course, you weren't doing that. You were just trolling. Bravo, the cool kids are impressed by stuff like that.

Go outside.

PS Cute username. I'm going to call you wedgiemental from here on in.
