Nintendo Gaming / I'm conflicted by the Switch
« on: January 16, 2017, 06:13:57 PM »
I love the idea of the Switch, but as a home console it's too underpowered compared to PS4 and Xbox One (so it won't get any multiplatform games), and it's too expensive as a handheld. I'm conflicted as to what Nintendo hopes to achieve with this system. For the past decade, third party developers have avoided Nintendo systems because their games sell better on Xbox and PlayStation systems, and I don't think the situation will change unless Nintendo actively goes after those developers.

I get that Nintendo doesn't care about competing directly with Sony and MS, and that's fine, but public perception of them has soured lately and they need all the help they can get to win over gamers again.

Sound effect and music creation sounds very fun! Now we can potentially make those music levels that are popular on YouTube. I knew the Frog Icon did something related to music...

There is no enter/exit modifier. To enter a pipe, you just drag Mario onto it and he automatically goes to the sublevel, where you then place an exit pipe. You repeat the process to make a return pipe to the main area.

The object to the far right of "Day 6" is a door. When you select it, you are given an entrance and exit door to place anywhere in the level.

Nintendo Gaming / Multiplatform handheld games?
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:37:39 PM »
Why don't developers make multiplatform handheld games like they do for consoles? PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One share many of the same third party games, but 3DS and Vita have their own unique libraries, with very little multiplatform stuff. Why is that?

PS3 was more complicated to develop for than Xbox 360, yet it got the same amount of third party support. Wii U may be underpowered, but developers could just make games tailored to the hardware like they do with 3DS. No one complains about the lack of multiplatform games on handhelds.

But the 3DS is weaker than the Vita, just like how the Wii U is weaker than the PS4. Shouldn't the same situation apply to both platforms (underpowered hardware = less support)?

Nintendo Gaming / The hadware power debate
« on: August 05, 2015, 09:15:28 PM »
As we all know, developers have the mindset that the stronger the hardware in a console, the easier it is to port existing game engines to it, leading to better games. This is why the Wii U hasn't gotten much third party support over the years, because developers deem it underpowered compared to the competition.

However, in the handheld market, it seems the power struggle doesn't matter. 3DS succeeded despite being weaker than the Vita and therefore got more third party support. Why doesn't the hardware power situation apply to handhelds like it does with consoles?

General Gaming / I hate the gaming community
« on: July 21, 2015, 04:56:26 PM »

Gamers seem to have this elitist attitude that the only good games are ones with photorealistic graphics, running on high-end hardware, with huge production values. The gaming industry shouldn't be so one-sided and exclusive. Mobile gaming has helped expand gaming to millions of people who would never buy a console or gaming PC. There are billions of people in the world, most of them have cellphones, that's a huge market to cater to. Mobile games give them a form of quick entertainment that they can enjoy in short bursts. This does not take away from your enjoyment of AAA games.

Then there's the ridiculous claim that games should only be made for one demographic, adult men. Gamers look down upon women, children, or the elderly who might also enjoy playing games. This form of sexism is extremely prejudice and does nothing to promote diversity. The gaming industry is much bigger than you think, and if it's to be taken seriously like movies and music, it should cater to all different types of people, regardless of age, gender, or demographic.

In short, this whole "casual vs core gamer" facade needs to stop. It does nothing but spawn toxicity within the gaming community. This isn't an "us vs them" war, gaming should be accessible for everyone. People like to play different types of games, whether they're on consoles, PC, or mobile devices. We should be happy that gaming has finally become accessible for everyone, it's no longer considered a nerdy hobby.

So hyped for Mario Maker!

Let the Kaizo Mario stages begin!

As for games I'm excited about at E3...

Mario Maker
Uncharted Collection
Yoshi's Wooly World
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Ratchet & Clank Reboot
Batman: Arkham Knight
Kingdom Hearts 3 (my fiance loves the series)

For those of you who are complaining about the wealth of 2D games, those are the easiest types of games to make, which is why so many smaller developers excel at them. The formula has been tried and tested for decades, and it's the simplicity of 2D gameplay that makes it so appealing. No worrying about maneuvering a camera or targeting an enemy in 3D space, 2D games are all about moving left to right on a flat plane.

I've wanted Nintendo to make an official Mario level editor for decades, and I'm so happy they are finally making one. I love using level editor programs like Mario Builder on my PC, and the Mario vs DK games are surprisingly robust, so I have high hopes for Mario Maker.

Luckily there is a Best Buy near me that's participating in the demo, but this would be perfect as an eShop download.

Don't need them, I'll be busy making my own levels. Hopefully Nintendo also releases a downloadable demo during E3.

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Maker playable at Best Buy!!!
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:18:48 PM »
Mario Maker will be playable at Best Buy stores during E3! I'm so excited to finally play it; I've been hyped for this game ever since it got announced at last year's E3.

It would be more convenient if we could download these E3 demos on our own consoles.

The Amiibo situation would be a lot better if Nintendo just sold them on their online store. Do what Amazon does.

And I'm so hyped to finally play Mario Maker at Best Buy! The press release said the demos will be at over 150 Best Buy stores nationwide, but it would be better if they were at ALL Best Buy stores.

Better yet, just let us download these E3 demos on our systems. Why don't game companies ever do that?

"Nintendo doesn't have a big game to replace Zelda."

Sony doesn't have a big first party game to replace Uncharted 4 either. I'm so sick of all the doom and gloom negativity that surrounds this industry. It's ridiculous. Games get delayed all the time(same with movies, TV shows, etc.); it's not a big deal.

Mario Maker has to be shown. It's been an entire year since the game was announced and since then we haven't gotten any new info besides the short Game Awards trailer. I want to know how the level sharing works, does it use Miiverse? How long can the levels be? What enemies and objects can we use from each game?

It's annoying that many people are ignoring this game/concept. It's something we've wanted Nintendo to make for decades, but there's no hype for it.

As for Yoshi, I bet we'll get a release date and a new trailer.

Nintendo has made quick mobile-style games before. Brain Age, Yoshi Touch N Go, the minigames in Super Mario 64 DS, all those would be perfect on mobile devices.

Nintendo has always created their hardware to serve their purpose. They use their hardware to play their software. They are exactly like Apple in that sense, software/hardware integration.

"new hardware system"

YAY!!!

"with a brand-new concept"

D'OH!!!

Sorry but "brand-new concept" makes me think "dumb gimmick controller".  IE: Wii 3, fails the same as Wii U, etc.  I don't trust Nintendo's ideas these days.  I would honestly want them to say they're making something conventional.  I really just want a normal console with Nintendo games on it like the ones Nintendo made prior to the Wii.  A glorified PS4 with Nintendo first party games would be awesome.  Anyway the important thing is that Nintendo is replacing the Wii U (or so I assume unless the NX is some weird Virtual Boy thing) and that's the right move.

It kind of sounds like Nintendo will be doing a universal account system across all platforms.  GOOD!

Don't care about the smartphone stuff though I know their stockholders were pushing for it.  I'm glad Nintendo's intention is to not ruin the value of their IP.  I want "real" Nintendo games, not smartphone bullshit.  That's at least one thing Iwata and I see eye to eye on.

NX is obviously codename for their console/handheld hybrid system.

NX = Nintendo Cross(platform)

And I'm really sick of people calling the Wii U Gamepad a gimmick. It's just an oversized normal controller with a touchscreen, like a large handheld. If touchscreens are gimmicks then what does that make the DS, Vita, and smartphones/tablets?

24
I see plenty of kids on Miiverse, so the notion that "kids don't play Nintendo games" is false. Also, a majority of people playing video games are teenagers and adults, and they're the main demographic of PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. Nintendo needs to reach out to everyone, not just kids OR adults.

"Would have appreciated Pro controller support"

How is that even possible? This is a digital re-release of the original Wii game, it's not a remake or remaster. The game was designed for the Wii Remote and it's quite simply the best way to play any shooter. I prefer Wii Remote pointer controls over analog sticks (which feel very clunky in comparison).
