Title: I don't get this whole indie movement
Post by: tendoboy1984 on August 04, 2014, 12:54:03 PM
It's nice for people to be able to make the games they want on their own, but is leaving a big corporation really worth it? They're sacrificing job security and experience to make a game independently that may not be successful. Furthermore, indie developers always make themselves out to be the victims who were persecuted by the "big evil publishers". You don't see music artists rebelling against record labels, or movie producers rebelling against movie studios.

It's almost not even worth replying to this...the opposite of everything you say is true.

Um Never heard of Star Wars, one of the most successful films in history was an indie film. Activision, one of the most successful game studios on the planet stared as a bunch of rebels who left Atari. Image Comics and co-founder Todd McFarlane, super successful at everything he does just about, rebelled against Marvel comics and stared his own company. Steve Wozniak rebelled against big corporations and started Apple Computers with his buddy Steve Jobs, seems like the MOST successful people are the rebels who say **** you to the big evil corporations.

On a side note, I don't get the fuss over "indie" developers as this new "golden age of gaming" some make them out to be, its nothing new we had indie devs since the beginning of time nobody called them the saviors of gaming back then why now?

There are a lot of things wrong with this post, but this part:

You don't see music artists rebelling against record labels

is so fantastically ridiculous that I have to think this is intentionally trolling.

Indie stands for independent and it is human nature to strive for independence and freedom, even at the cost of the security found in a big corporate job.

Also, I'm not sure which game industry you've been watching where working for a big publisher meant your job was safe.
