Title: How much of your Wii library is 3rd party?
Post by: Chozo Ghost on February 03, 2008, 02:22:27 PM
After a certain thread was bumped in the handheld forum, it got me thinking about how many 3rd party games I actually own for the Wii and that it would be a good idea for a similar thread here in the console discussion, so here it is. I'm proud to say that exactly half of my library is 3rd party games, and the other half is first party. Right now, my library is this:

1st Party Games
--------------------
1. Wii Sports
2. Wii Play
3. Zelda: Twilight Princess

3rd Party Games
---------------------
1. Ghost Squad
2. Resident Evil 4
3. The Godfather: Blackhand Edition

So I currently have a total of 6 games, with three being 1st party and three being 3rd party. I think it is safe to say that my library is evenly balanced. Can your Wii library claim to be as fair and balanced as mine?

Discounting Wii Sports, I have three of each.  And Zelda, but that's my dad's.  He ended up playing my copy of the 'Cube version instead, anyway.

1st Party: 9
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Excite Truck
Super Paper Mario
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Mario Strikers: Charged
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Battalion Wars 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Link's Crossbow Training

3rd Party: 14

Ubisoft:
Red Steel
Rayman Raving Rabbids
No More Heroes

Hudson:
Kororinpa Marble Mania

Codemasters:
Heatseeker

Capcom:
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Sega:
Alien Syndrome (NWR's review is so completely wrong)

EA:
Madden NFL 08
Medal of Honor Heroes 2

Activision:
Guitar Hero III

Bethesda:
Star Trek: Conquest

Sierra:
Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Lucasarts:
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

I plan to add 1 more to each category in the near future with Brawl (of course) and either MLB 2K8 (if it's good) or MLB Power Pros (if they screw up MLB 2K8).

EDIT: I also bought 3 other 3rd party games along the way, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz which I didn't like and sold, Elebits which I liked but not enough to put up with the 100 block save file so I sold it, and Madden 07 which I still have but I never count multiple versions of the same sports game when I count my games. I'd also probably sell Star Trek Conquest if I thought I could get anything for it, I seem to disagree with NWR on Trek games, I like the one they gave a 4.5 and I dislike the one that got an 8.

At 23 I'm already past the halfway point to the highest amount I had for the Cube and also more than half as many games as I have for the DS, despite having that 2 years longer, having gotten both at launch.

I don't know if this is all my collection but here it goes.

1st (9 titles)
-----
Battleon Wars II
Super Mario Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. (x2)
Wii Sports (x2)
WarioWare
Fire Emblem
Super Paper Mario
Pokemon Battle Revolution
Mario Party 8

3rd (17 Titles)
----
No More Heros
Super Swing Golf
Trauma Center
Guitar Hero 3
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Red Steel
Sonic: The Secret Rings
Madden 07
Alien Syndrom
RE:4 Wii Edition
Naruto Clash of the Ninja
Zack & Wiki
Marvel Ultimate Allience
Elebits
RE: Umbrela Chronicles
DDR: Hottest Party
Manhunt 2

I'm planning on getting more titles but I really don't have the time to play what I have. But I'm pretty sure more of them are 3rd party, at least the majority. I also just realized that it has only been 1 year and I already have about half the liberary of what I had for the Gamecube. We have two Wii's at home because of the number of people we have living here. (All my siblings) We also own two 360's, so that should explain the x2 on some of the titles. We are probally going to end up with two Smash Brothers

I think I have about 50/50 with a slight advantage to 1st party.

I own:

Wii Play, Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, Prime 3, Galaxy, Strikers,

third party:

Rabbids 2, Guilty Gear, Mario and Sonic Olympics, Guitar Hero 3, Metal Slug 1-6, MOH 2 Heroes.

I feel like I am missing a first party game I own.

I find this to be pretty interesting, all we here about is how Nintendo fans don't buy 3rd party games and yet everyone here has a balanced collection! Back in the GC era I bet I could count all the 3rd party games I had on one hand and some of those were bought used for a cheap price. Probably the only three 3rd party games I can remember buying new for GC were Killer7, RE4, and Super Monkey Ball.

Student loans my friend, student loans. Ask for more than you need for tuition and you get the difference back. I'll be paying this back over the next 25 years of my life... *sigh*

Edit: Clarification: I am NOT doing this, but it is something I've seen a lot in other students. But for me, my part time job pays for my games. The student loans pay for my room and board.

Yeah, the Wii and DS have shown marked improvements in my third party buying habits. Maybe diehard Nintendo fans like us actually do support third parties, it's just that the more casual nintendo fans, as well as regular games who own another system as well as a Wii, are less likely to buy third party Wii games...?

Not sure about the regular gamers, because I own all 3 systems and yet I still strongly support Wii titles. Granted I am only one example but I think there are enough unique Wii experiences out there from 3rd parties that people that own other systems will still support them.

Maybe the next thing we have to figure out, since most of us seem to have more third-party games than you'd expect, is to break it down by publisher. It's sort of unfair that it takes all the third parties out there to match just Nintendo's numbers do you think?

Assuming an average price of $45 per game, you've spent about $1,500 on the above games. I'm sure some some of them were worthy of your money (critics aren't always right). But, just think about this: for the money you spent on those games, you could have bought all of the following:

- A 12 month subscription to GameFly.
- A (non-gimped) Xbox 360.
- A PlayStation 2.
- An 8MB PS2 memory card, a wireless Xbox 360 controller, and a Dual Shock 2.
- Anywhere from 10 to 40 GOOD GAMES ($700 worth), such as The Orange Box, Shadow of the Colossus, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Okami.

Imagine how many talented people you could be supporting, and how much you could be learning about game design, if only you started buying video game products that don't have the Official Nintendo Seal. If only you stopped thinking one of the most successful businesses in Japan needs your charity.

Kairon intends for some of those japanese businesses to die.

We have something in common.

Same here, actually.

I've got...
17 Wii games (plus 33 VC titles)
11 XBox 360 games (plus 18 XBLA titles)
2 PS3 games (nothing from the PSN Store, yet)

Okay, here's my list:

Nintendo (1st party): 8
- The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Link's Crossbow Training
- Super Paper Mario
- Metroid Prime 3 - Corruption
- Wii Sports
- Excite Truck
- Wario Ware - Smooth Moves

3rd party: 7
- Red Steel
- Dragon Ball Z - Budokai Tenkaichi 2
- Dragon Ball Z - Budokai Tenkaichi 3
- Resident Evil 4 - Wii Edition
- Resident Evil - Umbrella Chronicles
- Zack & Wiki - Quest For Barbaros' Treasure
- No More Heroes

So it's like 54% for Nintendo titles and 46% for the 3rd party ones.

Are we counting VC Games?  Now take in account I have GameFly and if we went by games I've played the Ratio be lot different.

First Party:
Super Mario Galaxy
Wii Play
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Third Party:
Resident Evil 4
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Super Swing Golf

More even then I thought.

In other words, Kairon is essentially flushing his student loan money down the toilet. These thousands of dollars worth of games he is splurging on now might get a few months of play, but the debt is something he will have to live with for years to come. Some of his games certainly have replay value, but many of them don't. I mean, Ninjabread man? I've heard nothing but bad things about that. This loan money will have to be repaid at some point, and I don't think these are particularly wise investments.....

RE4 and No More Heroes.

I'm planning on getting Umbrella Chronicles at some point. And I'll probably buy Baroque (though not in March since I'm getting some other game on the 9th of that month) and Oboro Muramasa Yotoden if Atlus (or another publisher, but most likely Atlus) would be so kind. And I'll probably end up getting House of the Dead 2 and 3

It's true! IT'S ALL TRUE! T_T

Well, actually, I do have a job. That's the money I'm flushing down the toilet. I've never actually inflated my student loans, though other students do that to buy laptops and cars. The student loans actually enable me to live without any rent or "living expenses" for the time being, so pratcically all my earnings from my student job is treated as discretionary income.

That said, never take financial advice from me. LOL.

Well lets see here. I have 17 Wii games and the breakdown is as follows.

Nintendo Games
---------------------

1: Endless Ocean
2: Excite Truck
3: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
4: Link's Crossbow Training
5: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
6: Super Mario Galaxy
7: Super Paper Mario
8: WarioWare: Smooth Moves
9: Wii Play
10: Wii Sports

3rd Party Games
---------------------

1: Dewy's Adventure
2: Elebits
3: Ghost Squad
4: Red Steel
5: Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
6: Trauma Center: New Blood
7: Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

If I had a bit more money, on the 3rd party side, NMH would have a place on the list as would Mercury Meltdown Revolution and Umbrella Chronicles. Which would give me a pretty even split.

Actually, game prices falling below the $40 level helps out my third party library immensely. RE4 Wii, Ghost Squad, Kororinpa, Zack & Wiki, Metal Slug: Anthology... all these wonderful third party titles I bought new for less than $40. Oh, and Ninja Bread Man too.

I own the following 3rd party Wii games:

Star Trek: Conquest
Godfather
Resident Evil 4
Raving Rabbids
Mario, Sonic, Olympics
MySims
Trauma Center

I have about as many 1st party titles, but I won't bother listing them since they're the pretty standard melange of Marios and Zeldas (plus Fire Emblem, which is possibly my favorite Nintendo franchise).  For me, the Nintendo/3rd party ratio is about what it's been since the NES days, ALTHOUGH the only Wii games out there that I want but don't own are both 3rd party (Puzzle Quest and Geometry Wars).  Actually, I can't find Puzzle Quest anywhere.

1p
Mario Galaxy
Zelda:TP
Excite Truck
Big Brain Academy
BWii
MP3:C
Fire Emblem:RD
Endless Ocean

3p
Wing Island
RE:UC
Super Swing Golf 2
NMH (ok, I'm picking it up this weekend, don't have it yet)

But I did also buy RE4 and Trauma Center 2 for myself, but then decided to give them as gifts instead this Christmas... and last Christmas, I did the same thing with Godfather

Wow, like some others, I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be a lot of library collections that are dominated by first party titles. Anyway:

1st Party
Wii Sports
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mario Galaxy

3rd Party
Godzilla: Unleashed
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

And, for the record, I had Red Steel... but I sold it.

Well, for the most part even if the support has been somewhat jacked up there actually has been a pretty decent stream of 3rd party games out there, quite a few of which the GC for some reason couldn't buy.  Shouldn't be that surprising.

Looking at the following publisher breakdown, it's obvious that even though about 85% of my Wii game library is third party, Nintendo still wins handily on a publisher by publisher basis. (no reserved games were included in this list)

Other big wins are Sega and Electronic Arts, but I actually have been easing off on EA purchases, in the future they may become less important a third party for me because they have offered few Wii games to appeal to me as of late. Sega, on the other hand, has been great, constant, and will floursih in the future with great game sin the pipeline.

Also, Capcom has some very steady offerings. Activision should be in trouble though because after buying 3 games from them near launch, it took me a year to buy a fourth in GH3. Ubisoft is in a very similar situation with no titles bought for that year between launch and No More Heroes. Konami benefits from having Hudson's titles lumped in with them, and Atlus' Trauma Center games put them above the rest of 1-game publishers.

Oh! And EPIC FAIL to Bandai Namco. You're a MAJOR publisher, but you've only got me to buy 1 game?!?! And where are the gundam games, hey? I would've bought BOTH that Gundam SD game, and especially salivate for Gundam 0079. Geez...

The reason we have stronger 3rd party libraries than we expect is because the 1st party games always stay full-priced; whereas 3rd party games might even be as low as $19.99. I'm one of the biggest Nintendo fanbois on the planet, but it is hard when you have Zelda at $50; Metroid Prime 3 at $50; Super Mario Galaxy at $50; and et cetera. These games will remain $50 at least for a few more years, and perhaps even indefinitely. On the other hand, I was able to pick up Godfather, Ghost Squad and RE4 all for $29.99. That $20 in savings makes a difference in the number of games I can afford.

I'm waiting to see how badly 2K screws up MLB 2K8 for the Wii. If they do a decent job I'll get that because I want the current rosters and schedule and minor league teams and such, but if it sucks I'll get Power Pros. I'm a bit scared to get Power Pros, though, my friend has it and I beat the computer in my first game 62-0.

Let's see... I have:

1st Party (10)
Excite Truck
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Link's Crossbow Training
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Paper Mario
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
Wii Play
Wii Sports

3rd Party (10)
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
MLB Power Pros
Mercury Meltdown Revolution
NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam

So there we go! I have an even split between my 1st and 3rd party Wii games at the moment!

The next three games I look to pick up are Okami, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit, so 1st party games will pull ahead, but it's still a very close ratio.

Wii Play
Wii Sports

Third Party:

Ghost Squad
Sonic And The Secret Rings
Super Monkey Ball:Banana Blitz
Zack & Wiki:Quest For Barbaros' Treasure

Judging by that at the moment I have 8 first party games and 4 third party games. Therefore two thirds or 66% of my collection is first party. I would probably have a lot more Wii games if I didn't also own a 360 and a PS3.

I don't actually own that many for any one console as I'm pretty picky about what games I buy. I also have a PSP and a DS which adds to the mix.

Wii - 12 games.
PS3 - 15 games
360 - 20 games
DS - 25 games
PSP - 15 games

I still have a lot of PS2 and Gamecube games I still play too. For the 360 I generally only buy exclusive games as I'm on my second one and I don't know if i'll buy another one if this one goes. As all my consoles are imports I have no warranty on them. When my 360 Premium broke with the three red lights syndrome I couldn't send it in to MS to get it repaired as it was a US console so I ended up buying a US Elite.

I own all but the PS3 though that will be changing maybe soon. (If I have the money to spare when the rebate checks come out in two months.)

I'm kind of picky when it comes to my games but I have bought some stinkers. Unfortunatly I usually don't have to time to play through most of them. Since I work full time, go to school, plus I'm trying to get a game out so I can pay for my loan payment when they come after I graduate.

By now I've added

FP:
Wario Land: Shake Dimension (gift)
Wii Fit (90€ but I think we split the costs or something)

TP:
Sonic and the Secret Rings (30€)
Wing Island (15€)
No More Heroes (34€)
Zack & Wiki (50€ but got a 10€ gift card)
Blast Works (um... forgot. Something in GBP.)
de Blob (47€)
Death Jr. (10€)

Also 17 Wii Points cards.

For comparison, my 360 list is:
Saints Row (10€, this is where the Z&W gift card went)
Phantasy Star Universe (7€)
The Outfit (13€ used)
Eternal Sonata (25€, should've waited since it dropped to 10€ a bit later...)
Earth Defense Force 2017 (25€)
Wartech (15€)
1x 2100 points card (25€)

First party:
Wii Sports
Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Warioland: Shake it!

Third party:
MLB Power Pros
Guitar Hero 3
Zack & Wiki
Guitar Hero: World Tour

That's a pretty good balance between third party and first party.  Ignore Wii Sports (which I didn't choose to own anyway) and it's dead even.  Too bad only one of my third party games is actually a Wii exclusive.

Geez, there are so many good-to-great titles missing from that list.  No wonder you complain about not having anything to play!

Super Paper Mario is the only currently released title I'm really interested in that I don't already have.  Any of the other stuff that interests me I can get or have got on my Cube or PS2 which both offer normal controls and usually cost less money.  If Twilight Princess was a Wii exclusive I would have it for sure but I wasn't going to buy a brand new console for a game I could get on a console I already owned and with superior controls.  So I have the Cube version and thus one of the best Wii games is automatically not in my collection.

I find the third party selection on the Wii to be really pathetic so I'm not going to have a bunch of okayish third party games.  I hate waggle so I'm not going to have anything available on a console I already own.  I hate non-games so I'm not going to have any of the Wii ____ series.  So what's going to interest me the most is the first party game core games and I have most of the major ones of those.

My tastes aren't any different than they were on the Cube.  The difference is at the same time the Cube had better third party support and Nintendo's output was 100% core gamer focused and thus there were more first party games being released that I was interested in.  So my Cube collection at the same time was bigger.  My Wii game collection isn't small because I hate games but because the Wii library is really weak.

Hm, let's see, of the fourteen Wii games I've bought, four of them were third party titles. I suppose that's less than 1/3rd of my Wii collection.

Nintendo-published titles:
Endless Ocean
Mario Kart Wii
Mario Party 8
Mario Strikers Charged
Mario Super Sluggers
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Wii Play
Wii Sports

Crappy Third-party titles:
Boom Blox (sold it)
House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Thrilleville: Off The Rails

100%?  I think your exaggerating a bit....do you not remember all of the Mario whoring?  Mario Party up the whazoo, all the mario sports titles?  Sure Mario Strikers was good and watching Luigi dunk over Carmelo Anthony was funny but for the most parts those games were not for core gamers.  By the way when does another Mario Party come around?
Title: Re: How much of your Wii library is 3rd party?
Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on January 23, 2009, 08:59:54 PM
Yeah, that was the period where Ian complained about seeing nothing but first party cash cow milk residue; he didn't buy games back then either.

Another Mario Party will arrive after Motion Plus is established.  For now, Mario Party 8 is the most successful game in the series, and therefore will not get an immediate Rayman Rabbid Balance Board sequel.

Super Paper Mario is the only currently released title I'm really interested in that I don't already have.

The game is pretty meh, there's better games available if you don't absolutely NEED old Nintnedo IPs attached to every game you buy.

Also... *slap* GET DE BLOB YOU LAZY BUM! There's plenty of games on the Wii that aren't just "okayish".

Not on the wii.  I do support 3 party developers for the xbox...

To be honest, I had to look up The Conduit.  I would say I am a casual gamer who isnt interested in casual games, if that makes sense.

Guitar Hero, Mario party, things like that.  I guess casual/party game is more what I meant.  I did own games like Sega soccer slam and rogue squardron for the gamecube so I dont consider myself a nintendo fanboy or anything.

See this is why I don't like the casual gamer moniker, I'd say that he just plays games occasionally probably due to time constrains which is perfectly fine. People seriously need to understand that people have different tastes.

If you liked Sega Soccer Slam you should check out Mario Strikers: Charged it's a really fun soccer game that's crazy and arcade style.
