Nintendo 3DS XL Coming to All Regions This Year
« on: June 22, 2012, 12:54:57 AM »

Nintendo 3DS gets an inflation.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30811

The Nintendo 3DS is coming to North America, Japan, and Europe, on August 19 in North America and July 28 for both other regions.

The upsized version, called the Nintendo 3DS LL in Japan, boasts a 90% larger viewing area, with a bottom screen increased to 4.88 inches wide.

The new version will feature an improved battery life of 6-10 hours, and will sell for 18,900 yen on July 28. The system will cost $200 in North America while the price in Europe is currently unknown. It comes pre-packaged with a 4GB SD card.

In Japan it will come in three color variants, white, red and black, and silver and black. In North America the system will be available in two colors, red and blue. In Europe the system will be available in blue, red, and silver.

We'll post more information the instant it becomes available.

UPDATE: In Japan and Europe, the new model of the handheld will not come with a power adapter with the intention of recycling existing cables from previous DS iterations, but there will be the option to purchase the cable separately if need be. The North American version will come with the adapter included in the box.

It's kinda odd though.  Bigger doesn't mean better since the resolution is going be the same?  You can get the same results with a $1 magnifier from Big Lots.  Not sure if a larger screen will improve viewing angles?  That might be something otherwise you'll better off with the orginal 3ds unless your eyes are going bad.

18,900 yen = additional $50 so that's going place the 3DS XL around $230 if prices remain the same for the states.

I mean, it doesn't matter to me, I'm not hurting for 3DS-sized chargers... but since GameStop won't take a trade in without one, I see lots of folks having to buy an AC Adapter.

Looks fancy, especially the revamped Select/Home/Start trio. Do my eyes deceive me or does the inside have a matte finish? If so, SOLD! I'm glad I never opened my Circle Pad Pro so I'll be returning that. I want to know how I can transfer all of those Ambassador games and such. My friend works at Play N Trade so he would let me transfer the games while I'm in the store. So far, everything is coming up Milhous... wait...

The missing right circle pad is baffling. There's even more space for it now. I didn't feel like it was necessarily a guarantee, but it made sense from a cost-saving standpoint. Then again, Nintendo is trolling everyone by not including an AC adapter. Wow... Think of how many people trading up will have to buy one considering places like Gamestop require the AC adapter for a trade. Lucky me, I've been using my DSi charger since I bought a 3DS last year. I suppose Nintendo is going for parity with the original 3DS. A larger 3DS with an extra circle pad would kind of look like a completely new product. It still would have been nice though, even if Nintendo would also have to figure out how to fit the extra shoulder buttons without making the unit itself even more bulky. That thing is a behemoth already.

Because Nintendo doesn't give a sh*t about the circle pad pro.  It's time we gave up that ghost.  As soon as Uprising announced it was only supporting it in a half-assed way, we shoulda taken the hint.

I want one.... but I will no longer be able to carry it in my pocket.

Yeah, that's sort of the only bummer, isn't it?   I got really used to carrying mine in my pocket all the time...oh well.   Time to hit reload on Amazon again.   A preorder page has to come up soon, doesn't it?

On the upside, if this displays DS games as well, better, or nearly as well as the XL, then I'll be thankful that I don't have to lug that thing around in my bag as well.   I can put that in storage or something, and use my new 3DS XL for my 3DS games and my DS games.  That will be nice.

Miyamoto says: We’re working on a successor to 3DS, not necessarily a revision.  *bam* 3DS XL two weeks later.

Miyamoto says: Were looking at putting either Majora’s Mask or a follow up to A Link to the Past on 3DS, we’re not sure, we’re still “experimenting†a full year later.

Why is it that I still believe a completely new Zelda 3DS will be coming next year? Like I said before, I think Miyamoto was trying to throw everyone off their path at E3. And it’s now official, Nintendo direct is more important than E3. To think they had their own 3DS showcase, and didn’t even mention the revision. Is this just strange or is it Nintendo in desperation mode following E3’s dismal reception?

Maybe Miyamoto doesn't consider this a revision. I don't think the XL is meant to replace the existing 3DS like DS Lite replaced the original. The XL is just that, a larger version of what is already on the market. Not everyone wants a handheld system that's not really portable anymore. I mean, I do, but I've never carried around my handhelds. I treated them like consoles and I only played them at home because when I go out, I go out. I don't go places to play videogames; I go places to not play videogames. The XL just makes it easier for me to play 3DS games.

Actually that's only playing DS titles, ign stated the battery life is 3.5=5hrs for 3DS games :( .  Meaning you'll still going want to swap the battery pack.

And it's kinda odd the XL didn't include CCP since Capcom requested one (hense why the 3ds got one in the first place) and MH4 is most likely due sometime early 2013?

Also, I wonder if the 3DS will see a price drop in the states?  $150 sounds about right.

Maybe Miyamoto doesn't consider this a revision. I don't think the XL is meant to replace the existing 3DS like DS Lite replaced the original.

Yes.   I mean, I'm going to buy the 3DS XL, it's a no brainer for me, my interests, and my playing habits, but the size really, really cuts into its portability.  For the longest time, I've carried around both my 3DS (in my pocket) and my XL (in my bag) and 99 times out of 100, I'm busting out my 3DS.   It just makes it easier.   There's a lot of people, maybe most, for whom that will be a #1 priority.  Look at the DSi XL.  How many people who had a DS went to the XL?  Show of hands, please?  [crickets chirp] I thought so.

At the same time, I love my XL, and I'm thrilled about this.   I think a lot of people complain about how the XL's screens are bigger but don't add resolution, and so the picture would, could, and in a way does look worse.  But for anyone who actually owned an XL, yes, all 5 of you, you love it, love the huge size of the screens, and can never go back to  your DSi or DS lite.

I know the paragraph above seems directly at odds with the one preceding, but really, it comes down to the tradeoff-- screen size vs. portability.  Good points on both sides, and you've just got to choose what's more important for you.  Of course, since save data is stored on the game cartridge and not the SD card...well, you may be able to enjoy both.

I didn’t necessarily mean a revision as a replacement to the current model; although it’s hard to justify not getting the XL for $30 more, unless it’s just too big to carry around all the time, which I can understand. I just meant, the fact that they didn’t mention this at all during E3 or at their own specialized 3DS conference is quite unusual.

yeah i dont see any reason for current 3ds owners to be angry at nintendo for the 3ds xl, if i had already owned one i wouldnt have bothered since the only difference is the size and the matte finish, it's not like its leaps an bounds better than the current 3ds like the DS lite was to the original DS or even the GBA to the GBA SP. Im glad the trend is towards bigger handhelds since I have big hands and they cramp up while playing the ds lite.

Bought my 3DS day one, knew a revision would be around within 2 years and I am so happy! This XL looks like the something different, even if ever so slightly. Yahoo!!!!!!!!!

Now... Do I do the adult thing and wait for colors I really really want, or should I be an early adopter day one again? Who am I kidding?! I'll be the first in line again!

There's small holes in the new LL as well, supposed to be for wrist straps but you can use them for an neckstrap as well.  Me, I use either an armband or I even have an waist fanny pack since I don't like things hanging from my neck.

So carrying the 3DS LL shouldn't be any more hassle than an Vita.

Redesigned to match the design aesthetics of the Wii U.

Called it!

They did the exact same thing with announcing the DS lite right after Wii had stolen the show at E3.

Not including a second slidepad is deliberate in distinguishing the handheld experience from the console experience, is my best guess. Had it been there, the 3DS XL would literally just be a small Wii U in terms of functionality.

Gotta make sure they do something different, or people won't see how they need both.

So... How do I go about transferring everything from my 3DS to my upcoming 3DS XL? :D
System Settings > Other Settings > System Transfer. You can do this only 5 times though, so use it wisely.

I just don't know if I trust Nintendo to make it quite that easy. ;)

Transferring data is that easy. I had to do it once. There is also a nice animation of Pikmin moving your data.

I just googled the System Transfer. It transfers everything including the System ID and Friend Roster which was the thing I was worried about. Only save credit card info and photos, video and sound files on the SD card will not transfer. There's really no barrier here. I know my friend at Play N Trade will let me do a System Transfer in the store; I'm not sure about GameStop. They might be dicks about it. I would only consider trading my regular 3DS at GameStop if they had a trade special. Either way, I'm keeping the SD card.

I hadn't even thought of that. I think you're probably looking at $220 or $230 for an older game like Mario Kart 7 or Super Mario 3D Land. I'd be surprised if they gave you one of their big holiday releases for free.

This revision proves Miyamoto is a liar. He flat out denied there would ever be a 3DS revision not that long ago.

Also, if this doesn't include circle pad pro integrated into it and if the system is physically larger then they need to come out with a new circle pad pro peripheral because obviously the one designed for the original 3DS isn't going to fit onto this one.

Why are you surprised by this? Nintendo didn't want to announce it 2 weeks ago so they didn't. That happened with DS Lite too. Everyone pretty much assumed that a new 3DS model was coming. Nintendo will announce things when they're ready.

Still, like I said earlier, the XL isn't a replacement model. It's meant to be sold alongside the 3DS that's already in stores. I wouldn't even classify this as a revision. It's practically the same exact system, only bigger.

I did the transfer from the DSi to 3DS and it took a while. Depending on how many eShop titles you own, I could see this taking a lot longer unless they found a way to make it work better than it did originally.

I understand many people will see the large, attractive screens and buy the revision. But I'm with you.  If the only functional changes are increasing visibility with a trade-off of reducing portability and making some (optional, but potentially desirable) peripherals no longer work then I'm certainly not re-buying.

That said, I'm probably just not in the target market. Surely Nintendo wants to stop production of DSi XL units soon, and having a replacement on the market makes a lot of sense assuming that product was successful for them.  Netflix alone will make this an attractive option for some people.

Sounds kind of ridiculous when you put it that way. Until you realize that multiple system-selling games strongly recommend using an existing accessory that gives your 3DS a second stick and four shoulder buttons - you know, the accessory that won't fit the 3DS XL right now and would push it up to at least a double-XL if a revision comes out later?

As long as you don't care about the small set of third-party games that support and recommend the Circle Pad Pro accessory it probably doesn't matter.  That probably includes the vast majority of gamers outside of Japan, so even though I'm bummed it's a smart move on Nintendo's part to release "as is".

Well, the morning after I'm really not as bothered by this as I thought at the time.  I actually wanted to play games like Resident Evil Revelations with the Circle Pad Pro, and it's certainly not compatible with this new model.  I doubt Nintendo will make a "Circle Pad Pro XL", either, so I probably chose the right model.

Besides, buying the 3DS brought me very close to Club Nintendo Platinum status this year, and a couple of days ago I wasn't even a Gold member.   ;)

Like I have said for several months, no 3DS revision will feature a second analog stick unless there are games that require it (a few support it, but none require it).

That's exactly my point. Maybe no games require it right now, but maybe something would have in the future... but since Nintendo is breaking compatibility with it this might kill these games off before they are even born. Is it more likely we are going to get a COD game with awkward controls or simply no COD game whatsoever? When it comes to FPS genre games you NEED this.

I think this is the very reason why the 3DS has not received any COD game to date.

They could always do a 3rd person Call of Duty.  Sony Bend managed a pretty brilliant solution to the whole "1 stick" problem with Resistance Retribution on the PSP, where you used the face buttons to move a "window" in front of your character with auto-aiming within that window.  That, of course, assumes a great deal more creativity from Activision than I think they're willing to do for a portable game.

I doubt any game will ever require it. The right circle pad might make the controls better and more intuitive but almost every game a company would conceivably release on a handheld can be made without it.
I think this is the very reason why the 3DS has not received any COD game to date.

I doubt any game will ever require it.

That's the nature of peripherals. How many games required the Classic Controller on the Wii? And how many games required the Motion Plus peripheral? That's always the way things go with peripherals. That's why if you want a feature to be supported it has to be INTEGRATED BY DEFAULT. If its not there by default, developers won't support it.

TJ says Nintendo will not integrate it until there is at least one game that requires it, but this is a catch 22, because no game will ever require it until it is integrated. So if it isn't integrated it will never happen.

There were Call of Duty games on DS and that didn't have 1 circle pad.

The key word here is "were". I think the last one was Black Ops which came out in 2010 which was two years ago. MW3 didn't come to the DS nor the 3DS, and there has been no announcement of Black Ops 2 either so that probably won't happen. What is your explanation for this?

And before you point out that the 3DS doesn't have the install base that the DS has, let me point out the Vita is getting it and its install base is even smaller than the 3DS. So that can't be the reason.

I still don't understand why this is a big deal. Nothing is stopping companies from supporting the CPP. Some games support it, some games don't even need it. Even if the right circle pad was included, no game would require it because then they would alienate all the people who don't have it. The right circle pad would always be an option. One could argue that it should have been there from the beginning but that's water under the bridge.

It would have been nice if Nintendo used this new model to include it but it seems like most companies can live without it. Capcom could have held Monster Hunter ransom again to force Nintendo to include the right circle pad but they didn't. Seems like they're satisfied with the CPP. Nintendo will release a CPP XL and I'll probably buy that when I eventually get Kid Icarus Uprising.
What is your explanation for this?
Modern Warfare 3: Defiance came out last November for DS. It was developed by n-Space. My guess is that Activision hasn't moved development to 3DS yet. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the missing right circle pad which can still be supported if they want to use it.

COD is currently the best selling video game franchise on the market. You don't understand why the fact this franchise is completely absent from the 3DS is a big deal?

Nintendo will release a CPP XL

One would hope so, but so far that has not been announced.

I don't think this will be the only 3DS revision anyway. Nintendo will probably do at least one more, and so there is still a chance this could be integrated.

They don't have to. They will, but they don't have to. The only reason the CPP exists is Monster Hunter, and since that's already wrapped up and given how terribly the Vita is doing in Japan, Nintendo could just say screw it and not do one, but that would mean they wouldn't be able to get people to pay them $20 for no good reason, which is not something Nintendo would pass up.

Anyway, has anyone put any thought into what a CPP XL would do to the size of the 3DS XL? The regular CPP took the lightweight 3DS handheld and ballooned it in size to a jumbo Gamegear level. Imagine what something like that would do to the XL model which is already large to begin with.

For a hunk of plastic with a few wires in it, there would be a pretty significant margin on that for Nintendo. I'd bet they could sell it at $10 and still be making money.

Anyone even interested in the XL is probably not too worried about size. A CPP XL isn't going to change that mindset.

I want to see what it would look like. I bet it would push the boundary of what could be considered "portable".

On the other hand, it is conceivable Nintendo could come up with a way of adding on the second analog pad without substantially increasing the size of the system.

I don't think so, because this thing is only a few weeks from launching. The only feasible possibility is that the change was already made some time ago and the revision we seen yesterday isn't the version that's entered mass production. I don't think that's very likely though.

I want my 3DS XL in black with a second stick and 4 shoulder buttons.
Cant give me that nintendo? i'll just use my launch day 3DS

They gotta save something for "revision" #2.

First they resell you the SUV model.

then they release the CPP built in version of the regular (that has inward facing 3D cameras) and make you buy that (3DSi)

and then they can release the CPP built-in version (also with inward facing 3D cameras) in XL (3DSiXL)

People should get over the absence of a second circle pad. "Oh but I want to play COD just the same as I would on a console" Maybe if they keep ignoring it, developers will make better single pad games like Kid Icarus; maybe that's what a COD needs to make new fans. It's not like the circle pad pro doesn't already exist and everyone from Nintendo to developers clearly don't care.

Companies always lie or give some kind of vague statements regarding future hardware or games. Every person on these boards except for you 2 believed Miyamoto's words were gospel. That revision was being worked on the second the the first model was released and you knew it. Miyamoto said what he was supposed to say, to keep his job and not canabalize sales before it was time, so don't go around demonizing him like his earlier statements were so unprecedented. Chozo I think you would just be happier quitting Nintendo all together. You are becoming to Nintendo what Uncle Ruckus is to black people.

However, I'm not sure if I even believe that either, because there is a good chance the XL won't be the only 3DS revision. If this plays out like the DS then we could expect at least 1 or 2 more 3DS revisions before all is said and done.

I actually think it would have if it were feasible. But at the time, the larger 3D screen wasn't economical and Nintendo might not have had manufacturing capacity. And people really wouldn't have gone for the $300 price point or whatever it would have been.

It was an unnecessary lie on Miyamoto's part. Part of his charm is that he is there for the games, not some corporate muppet. Now he has been tarnished and it will take time to clean up.

While the XL is a side-grade and you can argue the technicalities you want, he straight up lied. When was the last time he did that? Was it worth tarnishing his reputation for 2 extra weeks when it isn't going to cannibalise sales? It's still a month away. Who is in control of PR over there? If they wanted to pull an Apple it would have been like "Bam! On store shelves now. Now fly my pretties and rain cash".

Oohhboy, it is a relief there is someone else who sees this the way I do. For a moment it felt like I was in some weird twilight zone episode. People really don't get why Miyamoto telling a lie was a bad thing? Really?

No, I'm not saying we should "disown" him or anything of the sort, but this is a blemish on who could otherwise be considered a great talented man. It brings him down a notch, but not so much that we should kick him to the curb or anything like that. Its just more disappointing, because we expected better out of him. Its like when there's an honor student with perfect attendance and everything, and then one day they come home with a detention slip for bullying or something. That comes as a shock because you didn't expect that...

If I dare say so, this is the sort of behavior to be expected out of Reggie. If Reggie told a lie like this it wouldn't matter because with him its habitual and to be expected. But Miyamoto? He's supposed to be the good guy!

Looking at Miyamoto's quote again, I agree. DS Lite was a complete redesign of the original. Nintendo changed everything from the shape to the materials used to some system settings like the screen brightness options. 3DS XL probably uses all of the same basic components except the screens which forces the body to be made larger. It's more like getting a different container of cookies than a "better tasting recipe."

I don't really view the 3DS XL as a revision because it's meant to be sold alongside the standard 3DS. I don't think we'll see a Lite or 3DSi version. Nintendo specifically designed the 3DS to be compact. It could be made smaller but probably not enough to justify marketing it. DSi was an anomaly. It didn't have the impact of the Gameboy Color, but it didn't cripple the brand like PSPGo either. Nintendo probably intends to ride this handheld generation out with just the XL as the only alt model. There might be a stealth revision if Nintendo shrinks the chipsets to be cheaper to manufacture, but that's more for them than anything. For a successor, Nintendo should try launching both standard and XL versions together if it's financially viable.  Maybe they couldn't do it this time, but if they plan it that way next time, they should go for it. I would get the larger version every time.

That's precisely why they release the regular version first, and then come out with the better version a year later. They love it when people double dip on the hardware. That's why I seriously doubt they would ever launch a regular and XL of their hardware simultaneously. There would be fewer repeat buyers if they did that.

I didn't buy a 3DS at launch mainly because it was $250, the XL would have cost even more than that. If the XL were available last year, I would have bought it for the same reason I bought a standard 3DS last year. I'm sure early adopters would have liked the option too.

Had there been no discount and Ambassador games, I wouldn't have bought anything. Nintendo would have announced the XL though I still wouldn't have bought it until the price dropped to something I was comfortable paying. In any case, I would have always chosen the XL version. The only reason I'm double dipping here is because I got an amazing deal on the 3DS last year and there was no XL version.

"I really feel like I'm satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it's the best for this generation.  What we're thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld."

I suppose it really depends on how you take that statement.  Is the 3DSXL really a change in the hardware?  Sure, it's got larger screens, which, on a handheld, is technically part of the hardware, but the specs of the system are the same...

If Nintendo had said "Oh, we're going to announce the newest DS system hardware tomorrow" and pulled out the 3DSXL, people would have been very underwhelemed.

If that's exactly what Miyamoto said there is no issue. The statement was just vague enough for him not get in trouble and not directly say something else was in the works. These XLs have been completed for long time now judging by that warehouse factory and the packaging.
Nintendo players and One Piece readers, just better people.

Reviews are coming in:  It does appear that by having larger screens the 3D viewing sweet spot has increased a bit.
