Seriously, probably the best advice you'll ever get.  The discs in my cube stopped spinning.  I sent it in, they had to gut it, and they put in a new 'cube'.  I could tell b/c apparently 'press start' can appear in pinkish and purple.  A new cube for $50.  And if you are luckier than me, you'll still have your warranty.

Do it sooner rather than later.

When I sent my cube in, it wasn't actually Nintendo that fixed it even though they led me to believe I was sending it to Nintendo HQ; it was united radio.

"Hi, you have reached Nintendo Australia. My name's Sally, how can I help you?"
"Hello, Nintendo?"
"Yes, this is Nintendo"
"But you just said your name was Sally"
"Excuse me?"
"Sally from the old Saturday morning Sonic cartoon?"
"Sir?"
"Yes?"
"Can I help you?"
"My GameCube broke"
"I see, can you explain what the problem is?"
"Yes. It doesn't work"
".... Does it.. Start up?"
"It doesn't work"
"Would you like us to take a look at it?"
"Okay"
*Silence*
"Sir, are you there?"
"Yes. Are you looking at it or not? Geez"
"I'm sorry, sir?"
"Yeah, you should be. I'm holding my GameCube up to the phone, hurry up and look at it!"
*Dial tone*
"Hello? Whoa, I need to put some shoes on"

Complain to Nintendo that the one you bought didn't work...and you've been a loyal fan for a LONG time...they may send you a FREE GCN like my friend's bro got. He also had the other one fixed...did it himself.
